Going the Distance... From Mile 1 to 26.2: A Marathon Weekend 2009 Trip Report

So it’s been four weeks since my boyfriend, Brett (27), and I (26) accomplished a goal we’d only dreamed about in the months leading up to our January 2009 trip… we finished the Walt Disney World Marathon :sohappy:!!!

For those of you who have read either of my first two (extremely long-winded) trip reports you are probably quite aware of Brett and I’s love for the Disney characters. And it might not shock you too much that our original motivation for tackling the miles was the thought of getting to meet all the rare characters found only on the race… that’s right, you read that correctly, we are two crazy people (non runners at that) who were willing to endure 26.2 miles of hell to meet a few characters. And since we’re talking about the underworld and all, I guess I should give Hades some credit as a motivator; he was our most sought after character (ever since we saw a picture of him high fiving finishers), especially for Brett!

To set the stage for this weekend, I should start at the beginning. A little over a year ago (December 2007), Brett and I set a goal to become more active, a new year’s resolution if you will, but we didn’t call it that. We started looking into Disney’s Endurance Series (because of the aforementioned characters) and decided that a half marathon (13.1 miles) was a manageable goal. February through May was spent teaching my body how to run, or rather jog. Seriously, in the beginning I couldn’t run one mile at a 12 minute pace without feeling like I was going to fall off the treadmill and die.

Once we made it over that hurdle we decided to go online and register for the event. Little did we know, the half marathon was already full and registration had closed! This was a huge dilemma. We had already set our sights on being a part of Marathon Weekend 2009 and we didn’t want to let it go. And that was when we started thinking marathon. I contacted my cousin for some advice. She and her husband are Ironman triathletes and she told me the distance was totally doable and she put together a marathon training schedule for us. For those of you unfamiliar with what an Ironman triathlon is, let me just tell you… it’s a beast. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and it wraps up with a 26.2 mile run. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!

So we posted the run schedule and a copy of the course map on a bulletin board in the kitchen and began checking off the days. We also used a thumbtack to mark our journey along the map. I spent months visualizing this course, and during earlier WDW trips this past year in May, September, and December I thought about the miles we would cover while we were driving down the roads we would one day be traveling on foot.

We started out closely following the schedule until life and ITB knee pain got in the way. Okay, if I’m being honest some laziness and feelings of “I don’t want to run today, I’ll do it tomorrow” got in the way as well. Fast forward to the week before the marathon and our longest runs had only amounted to ten miles…. we were in trouble and very undertrained, but never did we consider backing out. Granted that might just show quite a bit of stupidity and stubbornness on our part :brick:!

And don't worry, the upcoming posts will include pictures!

Yes, I've run a few 5Ks and one 10K in the past year. I think I'll probably try the half first.

I like the ASI photos, I'd be spending a fortune to get each one for an event like a marathon. That first one shows a guy in orange behind you guys that sort of made me giggle, he's got a really painful look on his face-poor guy.

Yeah, for characters I guess next time you have to run the Goofy Challenge...:lookaroun. Seriously, I can't imagine doing that race! Intense, that's all I can say.

Ditto on the intensity comment! I'd love to do it someday, though. Talk about a major accomplishment. Plus that things is already 85% full for next year. It amazes me how quickly it fills up.

I agree that the half is better to do first and that was originally our intention... it just didn't work out that way and we couldn't choose the Princess Half (because it's girls only). But I still want the Donald Duck medal!!

Wooohoo! You did it :D Must have been an amazing feeling to actually finish it :D Well done:sohappy:....and I'm sure you'll be shocked to know I can't wait for the rest

Glad to see you didn't knock yourself unconscious on the table :ROFLOL:. And thank you!!

wahoo!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

i love your photos also, all of them are great. i figured out some of your times, and it looks like some miles are a little over the 18 minutes, i am thinking i just might be able to do that.

amazing experience for you and thank you so much for sharing every painful minute of it.

i am now going to miss the wait for the next installment. well maybe not the wait. hehehe

Thanks, Louella!

Yeah the last 5K took us a whole hour, meaning our times were exceptionally bad in the end. We truly kept slipping and slipping further to the back. I'm still shocked we didn't ever see the sweepers. I don't suggest planning on that time as it could get you in trouble really quickly. That being said there are many walkers (god bless them) who maintain exactly a 16 minute mile throughout the whole thing. And that's impressive! It can't be easy to always feel like you're a step or two from being swept. From what I understand, through conversations with others, the sweepers give you fair warning before taking you. There are people (waving flags) at certain points who tell the upcoming runners how far behind pace they are and that they have to make it up by mile such-and-such where a hard sweep will be. If they don't, they'll be pulled off the course and transported to the finish line. It's my understanding that they keep you very informed and you aren't just swept up out of nowhere.

Yay!!! Congratulations on making it all the way to the end!!! :sohappy:

Thanks, Jenn. There were moments when I thought we wouldn't be able to!!

Immediately after crossing the mat there are volunteers standing around whose sole purpose is to catch runners who might possibly pass out/collapse/get lightheaded, etc. after reaching the end. Thankfully, we didn’t need them. We made an immediate right and were handed mylar “blankets,” which weren’t really necessary, but I wanted mine anyway! A few more paces and we had reached those wonderful volunteers who had been taking chips off runners’ shoes all morning. They clipped ours off; thank goodness we didn’t have to bend over and do it ourselves! Next up was something we’d been longing to get all day…heck, who am I kidding? I’ve been longing for this thing all year. Before I knew it, one of the myriad of volunteers adorned us with our well earned Mickey Marathon Finisher Medals! Woo Woo! I so wish we would have gotten pictures of this, but truth be told I wasn’t thinking straight at the time.

I think one of the smartest decisions I made all day came next… ICE BAGS!! To our right was the finish line med tent where I made my way over to a volunteer who told me to sit down and she’d be right back with my ice. Since we were there, Brett decided he’d like some as well (for his left thigh) and she quickly obliged. She returned with bags of ice and “saran wrapped” them to our legs. The feeling was heavenly! She was a godsend and Brett even told her so! As tempting as it was to stay seated right there forever, we knew we had to get up and keep moving, so that we did.

We headed through the tent with all the food and picked up a bottle of water and then made our way over to the official finisher photo area and had our picture taken, I think it’s only fitting that you can kind of see those bags of ice on my knees . I bit the bullet and bought both this one and the one of us crossing the line.

marathon_finisher_asi.jpg

There’s that beautiful medal! And just to give a head’s up: it’s going to be in every picture from here on out :D, but here’s a close up anyway:

mickey_medal.jpg

After taking the official photo we went back out to the family reunion area where we had sat in anticipation for an hour+ that morning, which felt like eons ago. And lucky us… some of the characters were still out. We met Goofy and Minnie Mouse.

P1110068.jpg

P1110069.jpg

I didn’t realize the CM had taken the picture with Minnie when I wasn’t looking until after we’d left, but I thought I’d share it anyway. If only to give you each another chance to look at my poor pitiful knees! Point and laugh… it’s okay. You can also see Minnie's RV in the background.

Unfortunately, Mickey’s line was crazy long and we only had about 10 minutes until the marathon transport busses left for good. On a side note, this is a minor complaint of mine… the busses no longer run after 2pm; however, the post race festivities continue on past that. I hated that we had to leave before we got to enjoy everything. I guess another option would have been to try to make it over to the Epcot park busses, but that was so far away and never going to happen. It was heartbreaking for me to have to pass up the big cheese, especially since it was his marathon we ran. We snapped a picture of him between folks and were off to find our bus.

P1110070.jpg

We found the bus just outside the Family Reunion area and crawled on. No really, you’ve all been on those big Mears busses (like the DME ones), never before did I realize how freakin steep those steps were. All I kept thinking once we got on was that it was going to be murder getting off.

Waiting to get back to the resort:

P1110072copy.jpg

We ended up sitting on the bus for 10 minutes or so before everyone loaded and it took off. This was the longest I had been motionless since waking up that morning and my body embraced the feeling. Unfortunately for us, you know what that means…finding a way to get our sorry butts off the bus was going to be brutal, and well, quite comical :ROFLOL:. Really, I kind of wish we'd had a video camera! Going down was even more treacherous than going up; I actually had to turn around and go backwards! Apparently, it has something to do with the little tears in the leg muscles that are a result of pounding all that pavement. Whatever it is I can promise you it doesn’t feel good.

So once we managed to get off the bus we had what would have normally been a 2 minute walk back to our room, which turned out to easily take 10 minutes. Of course we just happened to be on the second floor, so it was time to decide, stairs or elevator? Seems like a no brainer, right? Well it wasn’t. The stairs were right in front of us and the elevator was a hundred paces away. We actually chose the stairs; thank goodness for the railings.

The first thing I did when we reached the room was to call my parents and inform them that we were both, indeed, alive. And aside from some minor aches and pains we would survive. Disney offers a really cool text/email service that will notify people of your progress during the marathon (it’s free you just have to sign up). It texts the person every time you cross a chip mat (or split). There are 4 splits throughout the race (miles 5, 10, half, and 20) and of course the finish line. I had read that the text service was spotty last year and didn’t work for every split. Even though I'd warned my parents of this, I was afraid if they didn’t receive the finish time, they might think we were laid up in a med tent somewhere. Apparently, Disney has worked the bugs out because they received every text along the way!

So it was on the phone with my mom that we learned of our official finish times. My official chip time for the race was 6:58:13; Brett’s was 6:58:14. I just so happened to step on the finish mat before him! I was so excited to find that we made it in under 7 hours; talk about cutting it close. While they often allow runners over pace to finish the race and get their medal, anyone who does not finish in 7 hours or less will not receive the official finisher’s certificate. We got ours!!

Our overall places (oh how sad this is): 14,677 and 14,678 out of 14,945 finishers… eek! Although, considering how severely undertrained we were, I’m just glad we finished.

Next up… a late lunch and Eagles/Giants at the pool bar!

I won't lie to you Holly....I did see small birds flying round my head for a few hours afterwards lol buttttt I recovered just intime to read the latest fantastic installment :D Yehawww! Your next trip better be soon as I think (well actually I know) that I'm addicted to your trip reports! You really make people feel like they know you and your family and are there with you! Oh Holly! I'm soooo happy for you & Brett! Your finish picture is so beautiful, too. Look at y'all...doing this thing together...and crossing that line hand in hand. I can only imagine how big of a personal accomplishment conquering something like this is. As cliche as it sounds, the journey y'all made together is much like marriage. It's so much work. Sometimes it hurts and you have to push past. Sometimes one of you will struggle so the other has to step it up and support them to help them through. The commitment to each other to stick together for the duration no matter what is absolutely essential to success. The rollercoaster ride of hills, valleys, twists, turns..it's all there. But really, what would life be like without it??? Through it all it's awesome knowing you were there, you lived it, and you felt every second of it down to the core of your very being. And in the end, through it all, it's so totally worth every moment. Someday, when the big 'finish line' of life is in front of me I know without a doubt who I'll be hand-in-hand with smiling with our arms stretched skyward in victory. Y'all are awesome! Give my big congrats to Brett, too. Preparing for and finishing a marathon in just a year is quite an ambitious goal and major accomplishment. I'm glad y'all succeeded...together! Oh I'd give you both big ol' bear hugs if I could! Yaaaaayyyy for you! :sohappy::sohappy::sohappy:

Congrats on finishing!! :)

And the very reason we did it. It's also one of the reasons I'm considering the full instead of the half next year. I'm afraid I'll find out afterwards that I missed someone really rare if I skip the marathon... maybe this means we should go GOOFY :lookaroun?!? Then we'd be sure to get them all!!

As much as I would love to do both, I think I would never make it!:dazzle:

I think I will stick with just the half next year, and try for the Goofy in 2011.

So did you guys end up visiting any parks or anything or was the marathon the only reason for your trip this time? I imagine walking the next few days was downright painful. How long did it take for you to recover?

Thanks! This one's not quite over yet, we stayed until the Tuesday after the marathon. Unfortunately though, this is the first time in a long time that we haven't already had our next trip booked when we got back from a trip... hopefully we'll be able to get down sometime this summer. Having annual passes is a beautiful thing!

Sweetpee that's such a great analogy... I never thought of it that way, but you make so many great points! I can honestly say there's no way in the world I could have managed through that thing without Brett. And from reading your trip report and all the fun that your family has, I can see very clearly that you'll be together until the end!

Congrats on finishing!! :)

I absolutely don't blame you for laughing... if we couldn't laugh at ourselves it would have been an even longer day. There's still a little bit of fun to be had on this trip!

Do you mean the food on the course? If so, there are 5 food tables set up throughout the course (somewhat like water tables), where they hand out fruit, I believe. I'm not real certain on this because we always moved right by them. They also have clif brand gels, which in my opinion have the consistency of pudding and a horrible taste. There are volunteers handing out bananas and such as runners go by. We carried our own fuel (10 vanilla powerbar gels).

If you're talking about the food at the end it is some of the same. We went through it so fast (relatively speaking) and just grabbed a water that I'm not sure what's there. I believe they're supposed to have packaged muffins (?) and I think I saw oranges. Not sure.

So did you guys end up visiting any parks or anything or was the marathon the only reason for your trip this time? I imagine walking the next few days was downright painful. How long did it take for you to recover?

We did spend the whole day Monday and Tuesday morning at the parks... now we didn't do much while we were there due to the pain we were in but we did continue to keep moving. The parks are a great outlet for working the muscles after this thing. As for recovery time... for the first week it lessened a little each day. And the normal muscle soreness was no big deal. But truthfully, my knees continued to hurt for about three weeks, tapering off a little each day. Brett's shin was bothering him for about the same length of time. I took the elevator to get down from my office for two weeks afterwards (going up was still easier than going down ).

Yep... it's called the Coast to Coast Challenge if you do the marathon at WDW and Half Marathon at Disneyland in the same year. I really wanted to do it but the timing for the Disneyland half doesn't work out for us.

And thank you for the congrats, ClemsonTigger!

Well deserved
And thanks again for the great story.

One observation...
The last leg of the race had many fewer pictures....was that due more to your brains turning to pudding or weren't there the number of new/rare characters that you were hoping for?

Some nice different costumes on many of the pictures you did include.

So how long did you sleep after the marathon? Were you able to get out and about and do anything around the parks or anything before going home? I'm sure you prob'ly had more for the post-marathon report. I'm just sooooo patient, huh?! LOL!

a friend of mine once said something along the lines of this:

"Some days, I wake up not knowing if I could ever run a marathon. But every day for the rest of my life, I wake up knowing that I did."

That is something for the two of you to hold onto, and I look forward to being able to say that myself this time next year. :)
