Going the Distance... From Mile 1 to 26.2: A Marathon Weekend 2009 Trip Report

So it’s been four weeks since my boyfriend, Brett (27), and I (26) accomplished a goal we’d only dreamed about in the months leading up to our January 2009 trip… we finished the Walt Disney World Marathon :sohappy:!!!

For those of you who have read either of my first two (extremely long-winded) trip reports you are probably quite aware of Brett and I’s love for the Disney characters. And it might not shock you too much that our original motivation for tackling the miles was the thought of getting to meet all the rare characters found only on the race… that’s right, you read that correctly, we are two crazy people (non runners at that) who were willing to endure 26.2 miles of hell to meet a few characters. And since we’re talking about the underworld and all, I guess I should give Hades some credit as a motivator; he was our most sought after character (ever since we saw a picture of him high fiving finishers), especially for Brett!

To set the stage for this weekend, I should start at the beginning. A little over a year ago (December 2007), Brett and I set a goal to become more active, a new year’s resolution if you will, but we didn’t call it that. We started looking into Disney’s Endurance Series (because of the aforementioned characters) and decided that a half marathon (13.1 miles) was a manageable goal. February through May was spent teaching my body how to run, or rather jog. Seriously, in the beginning I couldn’t run one mile at a 12 minute pace without feeling like I was going to fall off the treadmill and die.

Once we made it over that hurdle we decided to go online and register for the event. Little did we know, the half marathon was already full and registration had closed! This was a huge dilemma. We had already set our sights on being a part of Marathon Weekend 2009 and we didn’t want to let it go. And that was when we started thinking marathon. I contacted my cousin for some advice. She and her husband are Ironman triathletes and she told me the distance was totally doable and she put together a marathon training schedule for us. For those of you unfamiliar with what an Ironman triathlon is, let me just tell you… it’s a beast. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and it wraps up with a 26.2 mile run. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!

So we posted the run schedule and a copy of the course map on a bulletin board in the kitchen and began checking off the days. We also used a thumbtack to mark our journey along the map. I spent months visualizing this course, and during earlier WDW trips this past year in May, September, and December I thought about the miles we would cover while we were driving down the roads we would one day be traveling on foot.

We started out closely following the schedule until life and ITB knee pain got in the way. Okay, if I’m being honest some laziness and feelings of “I don’t want to run today, I’ll do it tomorrow” got in the way as well. Fast forward to the week before the marathon and our longest runs had only amounted to ten miles…. we were in trouble and very undertrained, but never did we consider backing out. Granted that might just show quite a bit of stupidity and stubbornness on our part :brick:!

And don't worry, the upcoming posts will include pictures!

Fly, Eagles, Fly!! It's funny you mention his shirt. He was going to wear something else but when he realized the Eagles were playing the Giants in the playoffs that day he couldn't bear not to support his team. The wonderful thing about it was all the spectators along the course who would shout "Go Eagles" and encourage him as we went by. It added another element of fun to the day :D.

Fly Eagles Fly!!! I'm glad to hear that so many people were cheering him on with the Eagles chant while he was running. How do two Eagles fans end up in South Carolina? We went as a family to Disney in 2005 and 2006 and my husband wears a red hat with a PG on it for Penns Grove where my children play little league. People see the hat and don't notice the G and yell Phillies!!!!! We love the Phillies and cheer them on too but it always gives us a laugh because we know it's PG!:ROFLOL:

Well, let's see. I've always like football and am obviously a huge Clemson Tigers fan but I never really had an NFL team I pulled for. Brett's a huge fan and his excitement drew me in. Between that, the Dawkins jersey that showed up for me one day, and all the games I watch with him I figured why not? Not very exciting, but there it is! As for Brett, he's been an Eagles fan since he can remember. His dad is a Cowboys fan and I think it was young rebellion that lead him to the Philadelphia Eagles, but I can promise you he bleeds green for that team!

you have me thinking about this! (not hehehe)

what are the gels you speak of?

Runners take gels to refuel and replenish all the energy, electrolytes, etc. they're depleting during the run. I guess it's kind of like drinking a gatorade or eating a power bar only it's much easier to get down. They come in little packets that you tear the top off of and suck down. There are different brands but the only ones I like are the powerbar brand. Their consistency is much easier to swallow than some of the others. I think there are alot of people who can't stomach them, but I actually find them kind of tasty!

So, you actually get to stop while you're running to take pictures with the characters? This marathon thing is sounding more appealing every minute!

I wonder if I could get everyone in the family to run with me. :lookaroun:lol:

Seriously, I'm loving all the details, Holly! I especially love how you all carry your camera with you while running and even take shots on the go! :D

Thanks, Amber. Yeah, Eric is one of those princes I never thought we would meet; both he and Ariel were a real surprise on the race. I just wish the picture wouldn't have been so blurry. Oh well!

Jenn... you must know I wouldn't have run this thing if it weren't for getting to take my picture with those characters :D!! How torturous would it be to get to see them but not stop and get a picture?!? Brett was the camera man; he kept that thing in his hand the whole way and said it didn't really bother him at all. After it was all over and I was looking through the pictures for the first time, I remember thinking "Oh no, I hope he didn't miss one of those mile marker signs. I need them all for the scrapbook!!" Luckily, he didn't miss any.

Wow, this TR is great! It's getting me all pumped up for Jan.:)

And I love the pictures!

Thank you! As I'm writing it, it's got me thinking about next January too.

Fantastic trip report so far! Can't wait to read and see more! The marathon route looks fabulous!

Thanks. It really is a fun route... considering you get to go through all the parks and even the time between the parks has some entertainment.

After another stop for biofreeze at the aid station on World Drive (love this stuff!!), I looked up and saw the beautiful MK entrance! Unfortunately we wouldn’t be passing under its arches like we did at Epcot; instead we were making our way to the left, past the Hess station and around the outside of the Richard Petty driving experience. Mile Marker 8 was just outside the track, along with a couple of race cars they had parked out there.

P1110030.jpg

Once we rounded the race track it was on to the MK/TTC parking lot. It was at about this time that I heard a guy on a loudspeaker going on and on about how everyone should be so proud to have made it to the halfway point… he was calling out names and congratulating runners on their courage to take the marathon challenge! Wait? What? We just passed the eighth mile marker… right? I can’t be that delirious already, can I ? I realized very quickly that the voice was coming from Floridian Way which was over to our left. The faster runners had already zoomed through the Magic Kingdom and were well on their way to a 4 hour finish time! Now that’s impressive :sohappy:.

For us, it was time to take gel # 2 as we took a walk break through the next water station. We picked up the pace again and came upon a fork in the road… the choice was ours, rock or disco for the next half mile? We chose the aptly named Headbanger Highway and made our way across the rest of the parking lot. At the other end we merged back with those who chose disco and together headed to the underpass the trams use to get to the drop off point of the Ticket and Transportation Center. This is the first place where I recall seeing spectators along the course; they were so encouraging and I felt compelled to pick up the pace a little. It was at this point that we crossed Mile Marker 9.

P1110031-1.jpg

We made our way to the right and headed in the direction of the Contemporary. Somewhere along the way we ended up on a side/maintenance road that lead us back to World Drive. It was time to head down under the water bridge and back up the other side. The sun was high in the sky by now and it was time to break out the sunglasses. We were at Mile Marker 10 just outside the backstage area of the Magic Kingdom and it was shaping up to be a beautiful day.

P1110032-1.jpg

At this time I’d like to take a moment and congratulate Adriano Bastos of Brazil. 1 minute and 44 seconds before we reached Mile Marker 10 he crossed the finish line of the very same marathon… winning the race with a final time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 38 seconds. My hat’s off to him. It’s amazing, the athleticism of some people; I can’t imagine the strength and endurance it takes to move that fast for that long. Meanwhile, those of us back at Mile Marker 10 still had 16.2 miles to go before we felt the exhilaration of crossing that very finish line!!!

So just to give an update on my status: I’m in pain… simple as that. The dull painful ache I was feeling in my right knee has now moved into full blown daggers with every step I run. Brett was starting to breakdown and feel it a little bit at this time, too. But just around the corner was the Magic Kingdom, and if there’s ever a reason to keep going… it’s the thought of running down Main Street, USA!

After passing the tenth mile marker, we found ourselves in a backstage area and before I knew it we were crossing into Town Square via an entrance gate between Tony’s and The Chapeau. The place was roaring with cheers and encouragement. As we turned right towards the castle, Main Street was swarming with well wishers and spectators on the left and CM’s cheering us on from the sidewalks to the right.

P1110033.jpg

We reached the bridge that leads to Tomorrowland and caught a glimpse of Chip and Dale up ahead. Brett picked up his pace a bit and I struggled to jog. The chipmunks were all decked out for outerspace and after we took our picture and were walking away we heard the attendant say they had to go in for a quick minute. Whewh… we got there just in time!

P1110034.jpg

Running through Fantasyland we saw a handful of characters that we didn’t take the time to stop for. Piglet and Pooh were outside the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. And Tweedle Dee and Dum were hanging out at the Mad Tea Party. At the carousel we headed left towards the backside of the castle and ran right into Cinderella’s less than pleasant family, along with Suzy and Perla. They were great as usual… going on and on about all the crazy people running through the castle. When Brett asked Drizella to help him because he didn’t know what he had gotten himself into… she laughed at him! It was great.

P1110035.jpg

The Fairy Godmother was also there, but we didn’t take the time to stop. It was time to run through the castle, which even had trumpeters up on the wall. We made it through and out the other side where the ASI photographers were snapping away as runners zoomed by. From there we made a hard right over the bridge to Liberty Square and headed around to the left. We immediately saw Mickey, Goofy and Donald outside of LTT. There was no way we weren’t stopping for the three musketeers and it was a pretty long line; I’m thinking we actually waited 5 minutes for these guys. I will say though, that the character attendants were fast with the cameras. There were two and as one would take a picture the other one would get the camera from the next group so they were ready to go immediately. Plus, you’d be surprised at how fast lines move without autograph books!

P1110036.jpg

After the picture we headed through Frontierland where the CM’s from Woody’s Roundup were cheering us on. We made it to Mile Marker 11 before leaving the magic behind and moving through the parade gate and into backstage. This was Brett’s favorite Mile Marker sign throughout the race (I think because of the background!):

P1110037.jpg

Around the corner we came across some engineers from the railroad who were kind enough to let us pose with them:

P1110038.jpg

And then it was on to the backstage area where Captain Jack was standing aboard his pirate ship and giving out orders to the minions running past him. We bypassed his long line because we’d met him in the past and felt we’d already burned too much time. However, Brett did get a shot of him giving out orders:

P1110039.jpg

We also found some signage back there amid the parade floats and ride vehicles:

P1110040.jpg

It was time for a pit stop at the port-a-potties just outside the MK backstage area before trying to pick up the pace again. It was really difficult. I think our bodies had taken all that time standing around in the MK as an opportunity to tense up. Just in time we came across another aid station where a lovely volunteer was pumping biofreeze into the hands of broken down runners. Yay, more biofreeze!

Next up… Floridian Way and the longest trek ever across Bear Island Road!

you really do have me considering this event, not for 2010, but perhaps 2011. hubby has signed up for 2010. there is just no way in the world that i would ever be ready for the next one,but the one after that. i was starting to wonder when i would think about our trips in 2011. lol

great report. hubby wants me to ask you if you really are removed from the race if your pace is not 16 minute miles. doesn't stopping and taking pics with characters push you back time wise?

yes, it is true that sweepers will pick up stragglers who fall behind the required pace. Disney gives its runners some leeway on the 16 minutes per mile pace, but if you fall too far behind, you will get picked up and transported to the finish.

I ran the half this year for the first time, and heard from some other runners that they felt Disney was more strictly enforcing the pace requirement this year than in past years.

Taking photos with characters will certainly slow down your finish time, but that's a very small sacrifice to make!

Great Trip report! Can't wait to read the rest! Hurry up and post, haha!

Thank you!! I promise, I'm working on it :D!

:lookarounwait a minute...I think I'm gonna require more info on Captain Jack. Where was he-was this backstage??

Yep, Amber he was backstage. We passed through the gate where Spectro starts and crossed over the railroad tracks and he was set up just after that. He was up on his pirate ship so those who took a picture with him were actually standing down below. Not with him. We met him at the P&PP in 2007 so we didn't take the time to stop because he had a huge line.

MKCP answered your question as well as I could Eagles!! I think they follow the pacing requirement a little more closely during the early miles than the last ones. They do have to clear the roads at some point and return to "business as usual" for park goers. However, once runners hit the Studios they are off the main roads altogether so I think they are much more lenient with the pacing requirement at that time. Towards the end we were definitely in the back of the pack and we never saw the sweepers, though I heard stories about them afterwards so they are definitely there.

As for stopping for the characters... it was our motivation so we didn't mind it delaying our finish time. I'd say our finish time could have been 25-30 minutes better had we not stopped... but where's the fun in that ?

My thoughts exactly! I always thoroughly enjoy HollyBelles reports!!

Thank you :)!!

Once we left the excitement of the Magic Kingdom behind my knees started letting me know just how unhappy they were with me. I was really upset because from a cardio perspective I felt great, I wasn’t tired and on top of that, I felt well hydrated and my muscles weren’t cramping up. It was just those darn knees. Brett was in the same boat with me… his left knee had decided it didn’t want to run another step. So we had a decision to make. We decided to take a long walk break and see if that would help.

Walking felt good at first because it didn’t aggravate my knee, plus we were using different muscles now and my body was happy with the change. As we were closing in on Mile Marker 12 we thought we’d give running another try… we made it about three steps and both stopped. The pain was acute (for both of us). No way around it, we’ll be walking the second half. We shifted into survival mode and started the power walk… it was time to move as fast as we could. The image on Mile Marker 12 was so well placed…the expression on the ladies face closely mirrored my own!

P1110041.jpg

Shortly after Mile 12 we came across Mary and Bert standing outside of the Grand Floridian. We had to pass them up though because we wanted to make sure we had some time for the rare characters we came upon later. The areas around the Grand Floridian and Poly were full of spectators, which was a beautiful thing. Our bibs had our names on them and I can’t tell you how moved I was by the fact that absolute strangers were cheering me on and telling me I could do it. They and the volunteers are what got me through the next four miles.

We had made it to Mile Marker 13:

P1110042copy.jpg

Just after Mile 13 we were at the halfway point and the gentleman on the loudspeaker was calling out names and congratulating runners for making it this far! Somewhere between miles 13 and 14 we veered right off Floridian Way and onto Bear Island Road.

P1110043.jpg

After mile 14, the trees closed in around us and I found myself in hell. Miles 12-16 were clearly my make it or break it miles. Brett suggested I listen to my ipod for a bit to see if that would help and I did. By this time I had taken my knee brace off (there was no need for it if I wasn’t running) and I held it the rest of the way. I think it became a bit of a stress reliever for me during these miles. I remember squeezing it over and over and telling myself “You can do this.”

Soon we were upon Mile Marker 15:

P1110044.jpg

We each took our third gel at the water stop after mile 15 and kept on moving. It was time to have a conversation with myself about finishing this thing! I was motivating myself with anything I could think of… the Mickey finisher medal, a celebratory dinner at Ohana that night, the pain of seeing others with their medals if I didn’t have my own, the embarrassment of returning to work having not completed the marathon, etc. But the worst thought (and maybe most motivating) was the disappointment I would feel with myself for not finishing. Next thing I knew, I looked up and there was Darkwing Duck, out in the middle of nowhere on Bear Island Road. He was like a beacon of light.

When there’s trouble, you call DW!!!
