Going the Distance... From Mile 1 to 26.2: A Marathon Weekend 2009 Trip Report

So it’s been four weeks since my boyfriend, Brett (27), and I (26) accomplished a goal we’d only dreamed about in the months leading up to our January 2009 trip… we finished the Walt Disney World Marathon :sohappy:!!!

For those of you who have read either of my first two (extremely long-winded) trip reports you are probably quite aware of Brett and I’s love for the Disney characters. And it might not shock you too much that our original motivation for tackling the miles was the thought of getting to meet all the rare characters found only on the race… that’s right, you read that correctly, we are two crazy people (non runners at that) who were willing to endure 26.2 miles of hell to meet a few characters. And since we’re talking about the underworld and all, I guess I should give Hades some credit as a motivator; he was our most sought after character (ever since we saw a picture of him high fiving finishers), especially for Brett!

To set the stage for this weekend, I should start at the beginning. A little over a year ago (December 2007), Brett and I set a goal to become more active, a new year’s resolution if you will, but we didn’t call it that. We started looking into Disney’s Endurance Series (because of the aforementioned characters) and decided that a half marathon (13.1 miles) was a manageable goal. February through May was spent teaching my body how to run, or rather jog. Seriously, in the beginning I couldn’t run one mile at a 12 minute pace without feeling like I was going to fall off the treadmill and die.

Once we made it over that hurdle we decided to go online and register for the event. Little did we know, the half marathon was already full and registration had closed! This was a huge dilemma. We had already set our sights on being a part of Marathon Weekend 2009 and we didn’t want to let it go. And that was when we started thinking marathon. I contacted my cousin for some advice. She and her husband are Ironman triathletes and she told me the distance was totally doable and she put together a marathon training schedule for us. For those of you unfamiliar with what an Ironman triathlon is, let me just tell you… it’s a beast. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and it wraps up with a 26.2 mile run. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!

So we posted the run schedule and a copy of the course map on a bulletin board in the kitchen and began checking off the days. We also used a thumbtack to mark our journey along the map. I spent months visualizing this course, and during earlier WDW trips this past year in May, September, and December I thought about the miles we would cover while we were driving down the roads we would one day be traveling on foot.

We started out closely following the schedule until life and ITB knee pain got in the way. Okay, if I’m being honest some laziness and feelings of “I don’t want to run today, I’ll do it tomorrow” got in the way as well. Fast forward to the week before the marathon and our longest runs had only amounted to ten miles…. we were in trouble and very undertrained, but never did we consider backing out. Granted that might just show quite a bit of stupidity and stubbornness on our part :brick:!

And don't worry, the upcoming posts will include pictures!

Can't wait to read/see more. The rare character picture opportunities (Darkwing Duck, especially) really make me want to do this in the near future. Awesome report thus far!

I say, go for it! We're contemplating between the full and half for next year. It's addicting (especially the characters)!

You're cracking me up ! And because your safety is important to me, I'm going to post the rest here in a minute!

That's one of the reasons why I'm doing the marathon in Jan.

And the very reason we did it. It's also one of the reasons I'm considering the full instead of the half next year. I'm afraid I'll find out afterwards that I missed someone really rare if I skip the marathon... maybe this means we should go GOOFY :lookaroun?!? Then we'd be sure to get them all!!

After conquering Osceola Parkway and the out-and-back it was time to take a right onto the exit ramp to World Drive. To give you some perspective this is the road that crosses over the backside Studios entrance and it is extremely sloped in addition to the incline/decline. Brett’s legs were more than unhappy about this! I could see that he was slipping into a dark place and the pain was beginning to show on his face. Thankfully though, he remembered to stop and take a picture of Mile Marker 22 for us as we went by!

P1110060.jpg

You can see off to the left of the picture that our friends from the big blue world had switched locations and were still cheering on runners!! As Brett was taking the mile marker picture I continued to walk, but at a bit slower pace; I would pick it up when he caught up to me (we’d been doing this for many of the miles and it really would only take him a minute to show up by my side). However, this time I noticed he wasn’t catching up. I looked back and could see that he had finally hit the wall. I could tell his left thigh must be bothering him because he was holding on to it as he walked. By this time we were on the descent to World Drive and less than a mile to the Studios backstage area. I tried my best to encourage him with the idea of characters just around the bend, and remind him that DHS was to be the Mecca of rareness. It was our most sought after park in terms of rare characters (based on pictures we’d seen of previous marathons) and I used that as motivation. My expectations were high. By this time we had moved on to Lake Buena Vista Drive and were about to make a right onto a DHS cast member entrance road (across from the Hess station outside the Boardwalk area).

As soon as we did we came upon the last food stop. I probably didn’t mention them before now because we never utilized them; there were five total spread throughout the 26.2 mile course and for the most part I think the options were bananas and clif gels. I was ravenous but my stomach didn’t like the sound of a banana and the clif gels are horrible in taste and consistency. The fare of choice here, however, was chocolate candy. Really?! My mouth was already feeling weird from constantly switching between water and powerade at the water stops; there’s no way I could fathom eating a Hershey’s bar. Though, it was clear that not everyone shares my view, as I saw many people taking the candy excitedly.

Brett stopped briefly to get a shot of the earful tower; it’s not every day you can get a picture of it from this angle.

We moved from the backstage area and onto the tram lane of the Backlot Express Tour, where we happened upon a green army man. He was moving along beside me making running gestures to encourage me to pick up the pace. It made me laugh because he was delusional if he thought I had it in me to run at this point! We kept on moving and came upon the tunnel that takes tram riders through the costume area of the attraction. The darkness of the tunnel felt good to me, but for Brett it was like a big black hole that was going to swallow him up and never spit him back out. Despite the feelings of despair he kept putting one foot in front of the other and we found the light on the other side. As I write this, I realize how dramatic I sound, but really… emotions were high and we were spent. Soon after, we came upon Mile Marker 23 and the Streets of America!

P1110062.jpg

There’s only a 5K left, folks. I should be able to do that in my sleep, right? There’s a 5K loop Brett and I run all the time around town and I just kept chanting over and over to myself, “Up past the post office, around the library and then back home; up past the post office, around the library and then back home.” In theory, this was going to be cake… in actuality, not so much. I was getting excited though, as I knew Kermit and Miss Piggy were likely to be around the corner. When we reached the Muppet Vision 3D area there were no Muppets to be found and no character attendants around (meaning it was quite unlikely anyone was transitioning). I was distraught.

That’s okay… onward and upward, surely there would be some characters around the hat. We made a left down Commissary Lane and looking up ahead (just before entering the open area around the hat) Brett could see some BPB dancers/performers cheering people on. I was elated…. until we actually rounded the corner. The performers were sans friends… NO CHARACTERS IN SIGHT... nada. As we were making our way down Hollywood Boulevard (half of it was blocked off for us with cones, the other half for guests) I was fuming with anger, for lack of a better way to put it. Again, emotions were high and this last part of the race was a real rollercoaster ride. At the crossroads, we headed left to exit the park via a backstage entrance. Brett took a quick pit stop in the guest bathrooms. Thoughts of the pain my legs felt back in the AK bathroom entered my head and I told him I’d be waiting just around the corner. No way could I do that again; I had to keep moving my legs. Around the corner I got my first glimpse of characters standing near the exit gate. It was the oddest assortment I think I've ever seen… Mushu, Jessie and Max . Not exactly rare (we'd met them all before), but I waited for Brett to round the bend so we could take a picture with them, seeing as how we didn’t have any other DHS character pics.

We exited the park and hugged the walkway all the way around to the left then followed the path along the water over to the Boardwalk. As the course narrowed down to a walkway, I remember it being rather quiet. I’m sure, like us, everyone was within themselves at this point. Brett was looking rough and I knew his left thigh had been shooting spasms , so I reminded him that he could make it with a quick, encouraging “You can do this, babe!” He became a three-headed monster for a split second, snapping at me with a stilted “I know I can.” Immediately following that was an “I’m sorry” and some laughter from him, and a fit of giggles from myself. It’s one of the funnier things that comes to mind when I think back on the last 5K. If we were delirious before, I don’t even know what this is called… it’s a whole other level. Look at that, Mile Marker 24!

P1110064.jpg

Then, to add insult to injury we came across a gentleman with a Mickey medal around his neck, who looked like he had already been to the room, showered and had lunch. He was lounging on the bank outside of the Boardwalk Inn encouraging runners to go get their medal. I thought it was great that he took the time to come out and support the back of the packers even after he’d finished his own marathon. The insult to injury comment is in reference to the fact that he was drinking an ice cold beer… and man, how I wanted one of those! You’d think he had been taunting us with it, what with how much I wanted to crawl up the small hill and take it from him, but no, that wasn’t the case at all! He told Brett there would be one waiting for him at the finish line… there wasn’t ! But hey, whatever gets you through those last few miles.

As we were making our way around past the Yacht and Beach Club where we had to keep making slight rights and lefts to stay on course a lady kind of stumbled into me. She apologized, saying she was having trouble walking in a straight line. Yikes! Sounds crazy, but it really wasn’t. Before we knew it, we had made it to an Epcot entrance gate, near the International Gateway. Now more than once (both before and during the race), I informed Brett that the course was going to take us right from England and through all of World Showcase before we exited the park from Future World. He had fair warning, but was none too happy to find out he couldn’t take the short route home when we entered WS through England! He looked at me, about to ask why it was I didn’t tell him this was going to happen, and then it donned on him... I had!

The bridge over to France was excruciating, but once we got there we came upon my favorite mile marker of the race. Mile Marker 25…1.2 to go!

P1110065.jpg

Our trip through World Showcase was quiet (like the last two parks, there was an area set aside for runners, er... walkers at this point). And the countries had never seemed further away from one another than they did at that very moment. Plus, did you know there’s a little incline when you head into America from either side? It’s so slight that I guess I never realized it was there, but boy did I curse it as we made our way past! There was a CM in the area that was clapping for us as we went by and some of the park guests joined in. It was a great feeling. In Mexico I wanted desperately to bail on the whole thing and get a thirst quenching margarita… too bad we didn’t have some cash on us, or we might have taken one to the finish line.

I wasn’t prepared for all the spectators set up as we made our way through Future World. Even though we didn’t have anyone there specifically for us, many people called our names and congratulated us on being this close. I am eternally grateful to them, and all the other spectators/volunteers who encouraged us along the way. We veered right to exit the park through a backstage area and were welcomed by a full gospel choir and Mile Marker 26! Unfortunately, we didn’t get a picture of the choir, but they were great.

P1110066.jpg

Okay, so I’ll admit it, I started to choke up a little bit just before we made the turn and saw the finish line. I think Brett did, too. We had this look of awe in our eyes as we turned to each other and said “We actually did it!” However, there were no tears… my body didn’t have any to shed! I was so shocked at the number of people still in the grand stands, from what I can recall it was still full of people, even at this late hour.

P1110067.jpg

Chip and Dale were hanging out and beckoning us towards that mat. Neither one of us had the energy nor physical ability to even think about crossing the line at a run, so walk we did! And I couldn’t have been more proud.

Brett clearly didn't know the picture was being taken... but I had to get it anyway. It's not everyday you cross the finish line of a marathon!

Next up... marathon aftermath and getting back to the resort

OMG---I love it! Congratulations on finishing!!!!! Doesn't Brett know they take pictures and you should always be ready for it???? My kids pose on the roller coasters, you should see some of the wonderful poses Disney has captured for me!:ROFLOL:

Wow, what an accomplishment! If I didn't say it before, congratulations! I love the pic at the end of the two of you. Mile 22 definitely looked like a killer slope, I imagine that was horrible being at the end! And I know what you mean about people cheering you on, it is so helpful. Too bad there weren't more characters at DHS, what's up with that? Were you disappointed overall by the lack of rare characters during the marathon?

Thanks! And you make a very valid point about pictures being taken everywhere. I give him a pass though because our thoughts were so jumbled after all those miles. And for anyone considering this thing in the future... they really do take your picture everywhere (once you reach the MK). I knew the ASI photographers would be out in all the parks, yet in the later miles (Studios) I don't recall ever seeing them. They were obviously there though because I have proof. http://www.asiorders.com/view_user_event.asp?EVENTID=40036&BIB=14775
And obviously, if you've looked at those pictures, you can tell we had absolutely no idea they were in the Boardwalk area!! Scary faces.

Congratulations!! I was so excited when you crossed the finish line!!!:sohappy:

Thanks, Tammy!!

Thank you! Are you still considering the half? You totally have to do it. And from your comments about the spectators and such, I'm guessing you've participated in some races before?

As for being disappointed with the lack of rare characters, I don't really want to admit that I was, but I was. That being said, if the Studios had just had three or four (for example, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Hades, Bowler Hat Guy, any rare BPB characters) out there then I would have been extremely happy with the whole thing. Because each of the 3 parks before that had someone new/rare. Although I do realize for a character to be "new" for us it is very rare, as we've already met so many of them. Plus, I'm well aware that my expectations were set very high.

I guess this just means we'll have to do it again  :lookaroun!

Yes, I've run a few 5Ks and one 10K in the past year. I think I'll probably try the half first.

I like the ASI photos, I'd be spending a fortune to get each one for an event like a marathon. That first one shows a guy in orange behind you guys that sort of made me giggle, he's got a really painful look on his face-poor guy.

Yeah, for characters I guess next time you have to run the Goofy Challenge...:lookaroun. Seriously, I can't imagine doing that race! Intense, that's all I can say.
