Going the Distance... From Mile 1 to 26.2: A Marathon Weekend 2009 Trip Report

So it’s been four weeks since my boyfriend, Brett (27), and I (26) accomplished a goal we’d only dreamed about in the months leading up to our January 2009 trip… we finished the Walt Disney World Marathon :sohappy:!!!

For those of you who have read either of my first two (extremely long-winded) trip reports you are probably quite aware of Brett and I’s love for the Disney characters. And it might not shock you too much that our original motivation for tackling the miles was the thought of getting to meet all the rare characters found only on the race… that’s right, you read that correctly, we are two crazy people (non runners at that) who were willing to endure 26.2 miles of hell to meet a few characters. And since we’re talking about the underworld and all, I guess I should give Hades some credit as a motivator; he was our most sought after character (ever since we saw a picture of him high fiving finishers), especially for Brett!

To set the stage for this weekend, I should start at the beginning. A little over a year ago (December 2007), Brett and I set a goal to become more active, a new year’s resolution if you will, but we didn’t call it that. We started looking into Disney’s Endurance Series (because of the aforementioned characters) and decided that a half marathon (13.1 miles) was a manageable goal. February through May was spent teaching my body how to run, or rather jog. Seriously, in the beginning I couldn’t run one mile at a 12 minute pace without feeling like I was going to fall off the treadmill and die.

Once we made it over that hurdle we decided to go online and register for the event. Little did we know, the half marathon was already full and registration had closed! This was a huge dilemma. We had already set our sights on being a part of Marathon Weekend 2009 and we didn’t want to let it go. And that was when we started thinking marathon. I contacted my cousin for some advice. She and her husband are Ironman triathletes and she told me the distance was totally doable and she put together a marathon training schedule for us. For those of you unfamiliar with what an Ironman triathlon is, let me just tell you… it’s a beast. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and it wraps up with a 26.2 mile run. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!

So we posted the run schedule and a copy of the course map on a bulletin board in the kitchen and began checking off the days. We also used a thumbtack to mark our journey along the map. I spent months visualizing this course, and during earlier WDW trips this past year in May, September, and December I thought about the miles we would cover while we were driving down the roads we would one day be traveling on foot.

We started out closely following the schedule until life and ITB knee pain got in the way. Okay, if I’m being honest some laziness and feelings of “I don’t want to run today, I’ll do it tomorrow” got in the way as well. Fast forward to the week before the marathon and our longest runs had only amounted to ten miles…. we were in trouble and very undertrained, but never did we consider backing out. Granted that might just show quite a bit of stupidity and stubbornness on our part :brick:!

And don't worry, the upcoming posts will include pictures!

Does the marathon take place at the same time each year? We can only visit in July/August due to work and school commitments. Would be an awesome experience though I don't think I'd last 26 miles!
Can't wait for mooooore :D

I just got caught up on this read...and I'm itchin' for more! I've procrastinated on my own TR so much. I'm ashamed, really. HollyBelle, you're gettin' the motivation flowing. I want to finish this thing just like you want to finish your marathon. I'm on the journey with ya, girl. Let's go!

And I only *wish* I had it in me to run even a half marathon. My hat is off to you and Brett both!

HollyBelle, great report. Thanks for sharing...

P.S. Love Tom's shirt!!! Go EAGLES!!!!!

Thank You! And keep your eyes peeled for an Eagles jersey in the upcoming photos! Yet another Eagle encounter Brett had while we were out there.

Awesome Darkwing Duck!!! Lucky!!

I wasn't kidding when I said he was like a beacon of light! Later I found out that he was switching out with Launchpad McQuack and Scrooge McDuck. Two other great characters from the Disney Afternoon, but thankfully we had already met them in the past.

Yes, it is the second weekend of January every year. However, Disney does host many other races of varying lengths throughout the year. We participated in the Expedition Everest challenge a couple months ago. You can find info about them on the website, if you search Disney's Endurance Series. From what I recall they are mostly in the spring and fall, probably because of weather and peak park times.

Wow, Darkwing Duck!

I would love to do the Full Marathon someday. For now, I think I will stick with the Half.

I know we were so excited to see him, we hadn't come across him since December of 2005. I think he looks so perfect.

Thanks, sweetpee! I've been looking for your trip report to pop up. Don't worry though, I'm over a month behind getting this one posted :lookaroun. You can do it :sohappy:!

Mile Marker 16 was just around the corner from Darkwing Duck.

By this time we had moved into Animal Kingdom territory and were surrounded by various CM’s, each with an animal friend in tow. There were birds, sheep, goats, reptiles, tortoises and some I’ve probably forgotten. I really wish we’d thought to take a picture with the tortoise; I mean the irony of that would have been great. We do have an ongoing inside joke about goats so Brett stopped to take a picture of one, or so I thought. The first sixteen miles must have made us quite delirious because it wasn’t until I looked through the pictures a day later that I realized he’d taken a picture of a sheep instead :ROFLOL:!

Yep… no question about it, that’s no goat:

P1110047.jpg

The course was beginning to look a bit familiar and that’s when I realized we’d seen it before during the out and back of the Expedition Everest Challenge last September; we must not be too far from the pathways of the Animal Kingdom! Rafiki was out cheering on runners and so were Donald and Daisy. We’d met both ducks before but just had to stop for a quick picture. How can you run past Daisy Duck?!?

P1110048.jpg

We entered the park outside of Africa, just past the area where Baloo and Louie have been doing meet and greets for the last year or two, and veered left towards Asia. We were welcomed by African music and cheers from the guests enjoying their day at the Animal Kingdom.

P1110049.jpg

This was unlike our experience in the Magic Kingdom, which was empty; by the time we reached the Animal Kingdom it was open and operational to guests. A fairly large portion of the pathways were set aside for us with yellow cones and there were areas set up as “crosswalks” throughout. As you can see in the picture there is a CM clapping for us and holding up guests as we go by. And at various intervals the CM’s would motion for guests to cross over the course. I heard a quick snippet of a conversation between a father and his 8-10 year old son as we were going by and it made me laugh. I heard the kid say “But dad, if it’s a race then why are all these people just walking?!” And the father replied with “This is the kind of race that you just want to finish.” Amen to that!! But you know, the kid did have a point :dazzle:!

Now that we were in the Animal Kingdom, it was a good time for a bathroom break and we headed off the course to the bathrooms in Asia. As I was quickly washing my hands I decided there would be no more bathroom stops for me. Not only was standing back up excruciating, but getting my legs to move again was unbelievably hard. The muscles one utilizes when walking are totally different than those used to run and mine were beginning to burn in protest; I’d never put them through such agony and they were not happy, to say the least.

As we were heading through Asia, Brett asked me if I wanted to hop off the course and take a quick ride up to the summit of Everest. I laughed, as the idea was absurd and in no way appealing to me, but for Brett it sounded like the best thing ever at that very moment. To each his own. We kept on moving across the bridge towards Dinorama where we found Mile Marker 17.

P1110050.jpg

I can say with absolute certainty that mile 17 is where I broke through my wall, which I’ll admit was more mental than physical. From this point forward I knew for certain that I would finish this race. If you’re doing the math, you realize that mile 17 is the point where ones countdown miles hit the single digits… 9.2 to go! Thinking back on it, I’m still amazed at how simply passing that mile marker rejuvenated me, but it did. My spirits lifted and I settled in for the final miles.

From Dinoland we exited the park onto a road that would lead us to the parking lot. Just outside the backstage area we came across Minnie Mouse and her Jammin Jungle parade float!

P1110051.jpg

Next up was another aid station and you know what that means… BIOFREEZE! At this point I don’t even think it was helping, but I stopped for some anyway and slathered it all over my legs. Moving again we headed out into the parking lot and followed the tree line around to the park entrance. From here, it was back into the parking lot and to Mile Marker 18, which came shortly before everyone’s favorite mouse.

P1110052.jpg

Mickey’s parade float was out; however, he wasn’t. The CM told us it would be a minute or two and so we decided he was worth the wait. Not a minute later Jammin Jungle Mickey came strolling towards us from a trailer set up off to the side of the parking lot.

P1110053.jpg

I'm so glad we decided to wait for this picture. Especially considering it was going to be awhile before we had another reason to stop. From here the course would lead us out of the AK via the large looping route cars are directed when they leave the park.

I'm so excited to hear the end! Its just so cool to get a first hand perspective on how the marathon-thing works. I have always wondered so many things about it and you've answered all of my questions! Except one...how on earth do you look so great in the pics with characters? I'd have a super-red face by then! lol And Brett always looks so casual and relaxed!

Thank you. We're talking about doing the half next year, too. Which is somewhat backwards, considering most people start with the half then do the full ! Good luck!

love this report. even my hubby wants updates. i am now seriously thinking about this for the 2011 one.

Yay! I'm so glad you're considering it, and wish him luck for the 2010 race.

You're too kind, TakeMeThere! Actually, you might notice my face being a bit more red in the pictures from the first half. My body cooled down nicely once we moved to a walk, which is probably why I'm not red in the AK pictures. Plus, I'm one of those people who turns red after I stop moving altogether. As for Brett looking relaxed... I have to agree with you. It looks like no big deal for him; however, he did eventually hit his pain threshold (in the final miles), it was just a little later than I hit mine !

Holly I am loving this report!! I can't believe there are so many pictures!! :sohappy:

I can't wait for the rest!

Would you believe, now that it's over, I actually wish we would have taken more pictures... it's just that while we were out there we weren't thinking of that at all. Our thoughts were more focused on putting one foot in front of the other .

Now that we had made it through the Animal Kingdom it was time to hit the dreaded Osceola Parkway. In all the research I did about the marathon, it seemed that this was the portion of the course that most often broke people down. I think it’s due to a combination of things, namely the number of miles (18-21), the mental/physical “wall” that runners usually hit around this point in a race, the inclines found here, the fact that there is little entertainment, and that participants are walking into the sun with its reflection glaring back at them.

After we passed the AK entrance and really got moving we could see a few villains in the median up ahead where the road was beginning a slight incline. We stopped for a quick picture with Captain Hook and Prince John.

P1110054.jpg

We weren’t all too excited about meeting these two, as we’ve met them each multiple times and it left us with a few questions. As we walked away we discussed who they might be switching out with; we feared it might be Hades… who was at the top of our must find list (afterwards we learned it was Judge Claude Frollo and Jafar, thankfully we've met them both already). This discussion lead to another one about who we would find when we reached the Studios, because that’s usually where the villains are set up. We concluded that this must mean they’ve got Block Party Bash characters out :sohappy:. I was excited to think I might have the opportunity to meet George P. Sanderson from Monster’s Inc. or the Stick Bug from A Bug’s Life. Woo… truly rare characters. Before we knew it we were upon Mile Marker 19 and the incline was beginning to steepen.

P1110055.jpg

See the girl under the sign who has taken her shoes off? For me, taking off my shoes and/or sitting down would spell THE END. It would be the absolute worst thing ever, no matter how painful blisters might be. There's no way your feet wouldn't swell, meaning there's no way you'd be able to get those things back on!!

We headed up over what I believe was West Buena Vista Drive (McDonald’s and the entrance to the All Star Resorts were down below). Shortly after the mile marker we came across Pocahontas who was standing up on the curb. I love this picture because it has such a “Colors of the Wind” feel, what with her hair billowing out and all. It really was a beautiful, breezy day. Stepping down off the curb was unbearably painful. No more of that for Holly! And I think it was about this time when Brett was really beginning to feel the pain.

P1110056.jpg

It seemed like only minutes after making our way down the other side of the overpass, we were already working up another hill (this one was an overpass for World Drive). We also passed Mile Marker 20 at this point (you can see some ASI photographers in the upper right hand corner).

P1110057.jpg

When we reached the crest of the overpass we could see entertainment up ahead… it was the British Invasion, playing music for us from the bed of a large truck, which was draped with Friday’s Family Fun Run start banner . Beatles classics brought us down the hill where we veered left and then right to get onto the west bound lanes of Osceola Parkway.

P1110058.jpg

From here it was time to venture through the out-and-back, which was exactly what it sounds like. We went out about half a mile, made a sharp u-turn and came back the same distance. We took our last gels at a water stop on the out-and-back (I think I forgot to mention that we took our 4th gels somewhere between Minnie Mouse and Mile 18 in the AK parking lot). While we were out there we passed Mile Marker 21. In the picture you can kind of see the cones that are separating us from those on the return side of the course.

P1110059.jpg

When we reached the end of the return side we could look to our left and see many more people coming down the hill towards the British Invasion truck. It was good to know people were behind us for as far as I could see… and I don’t mean that as a slight towards others… more as a sense of relief for ourselves! We have yet to see those brooms (or rather, gentlemen with flags and on bicycles) moving along to sweep us off the course .

Next up: the final stretch through the Studios and Epcot. Woo Woo!

oh man, ready your reports is like reading a book in series. lol

i want the next installement!

so how long do you think you are taking for you miles? are you power walking? or are you at a more relaxed pace.

Well, let's see. I've always like football and am obviously a huge Clemson Tigers fan but I never really had an NFL team I pulled for. Brett's a huge fan and his excitement drew me in. Between that, the Dawkins jersey that showed up for me one day, and all the games

!

Of course you are!

Great report Holly...I'm on the edge of my seat for the big finish....
will they make it? ............will they make it?......

...that, and my knees are hurting just reading your report...

If you look back at all the mile markers you can see how long each individual mile took us. We were doing 15-17 minute miles in the second half. The course requires that you maintain a 16 minute mile throughout the duration of the marathon, but even though our later miles took longer than that, we were okay because we had banked enough time from our run at the beginning.

I'll tell you... in my mind we were booking it; however, as the miles wore on and on I think it only felt like we were power walking, when in reality we were moving much slower than that :ROFLOL:. Even though it was at a slower pace, it never felt relaxed.

You'll see when I get there that the last 5K took us a whole hour (when a 5K run through the neighborhood usually takes us a little over 30 minutes), but I promise you we were moving as fast as we could those last few miles.

They say the first half of the marathon is miles 1-17 and the second half is the last 9.2 miles and I kind of believe it. Especially after Mile 20 when our bodies were screaming for us to stop!

I was wondering the same thing with each step we took in the end... are we ever going to get there?!?! My knees hurt, too, just thinking back on it... well that and it took a full three weeks afterwards for them to actually stop hurting :dazzle:!

Go Tigers! Brett even has a signed Dawkins jersey, from when he stopped by TD's in Clemson a couple years ago!!
