Lodge-hopping... from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 TR!

Last week we returned from our summer Disney fix so it’s time again for another monster trip report!! This one is sure to dwarf my previous reports in sheer size alone considering it was a 9 night/10 day stay at WDW and all our past trips have ranged from 3-5 night stays. I must say it’s a bit daunting, but I took detailed notes and am ready to relive our adventures (and possibly bore you with all the details)!!

The cast includes myself, Holly; the birthday boy, Brett; his parents, Kathy and Danny; and brother, Derek. Here’s one of the few pictures I have of us all from our December 2008 trip:

IMG_1104.jpg

The planning stages of this trip went through many variations. So let’s start at the beginning… ever since the “Celebrate” theme was released I wanted to plan a trip for Brett’s birthday. We started putting it into action sometime in early April and not long after we settled on dates and made reservations, Brett’s parents invited us to join them on their summer trip to the Wilderness Lodge Villas. It just so happened to be close to the dates we were already looking at, so we talked about it and decided if we budgeted right we could do a super trip. Woohoo for super trips :sohappy:.

We changed our dates slightly to line up with theirs, and then I cancelled our ADRs and made some new ones. Since we were on a budget we decided a value resort was a must (and we should forego signature dining)… no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least that’s what Brett thought… I, however, had other plans! I got it into my head that it would be so cool to surprise him with a deluxe resort so we wouldn’t, you know, be slumming when we left the WL . Once I had my mind set I practically took up a vigil waiting for the AP resort rates to be released. And when they were I snagged a pool view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our four night stay! Oh yeah… and we couldn’t possibly celebrate his birthday without some wine and signature dining so I made reservations for Jiko!

To make a long story even longer, Brett called me at work one day and told me his parents had to make a slight change to their dates, which meant we would either have to do the same or lose some days of “our” trip. I was freaking out (and couldn’t tell him) because I just knew the AP rate would no longer be available… and it wasn’t. So I started calling once or twice a day, every day. I can still recite the confirmation number! I was in luck though, because after three weeks of calling the AP rate magically reappeared!!! I guess I’m sharing all this basically to say sometimes it pays to be persistent. Let me just tell you… keeping this secret nearly killed me, but it was totally worth it!

Okay, so now that we've gotten all of that out of the way… let us finally begin.

We entered the Land pavilion and made our way downstairs to ride Living with the Land. I really enjoy this ride and am excited to see what they do with it during the revamp.

By this time it was about 11:30ish and our Soarin fastpasses were up, so we took flight over California before meandering over to World Showcase for our lunch reservations. We took our time and on the way I couldn’t help but notice how empty Epcot seemed that morning. It was weird, especially considering the time of year. There were hardly any people in World Showcase.

We can’t forget to celebrate World Showcase today. I actually really like the “Celebrate” banners, and the overall marketing campaign for that matter. Hello, empty Canada:

P7150089.jpg

I love this next picture! Clearly, Derek is the tallest of the three of us and somehow he ended up at the bottom:

We wandered around France a bit, which like the rest of World Showcase was quite empty:

Les Chefs de France was at the top of our “must eat” list this trip for the obvious reason. No, not Chef de Cuisine, Paul Bocuse…. Chef Remy!!

Remy and the maitre d’:

Remy was great. He looked perfect and both he and the maitre d' did a really good job interacting with the tables. I was so glad we got to see him before he moves on to another park. Remy suggested the lobster bisque and I was happy to oblige. I ordered the prix fixe 3 course meal for $20. The lobster bisque was the best part. It had a good bit of lobster chunks in it, unlike the bisque served at some places with little, if any, lobster meat. It was so good I didn’t take the time for a picture. Along with my lobster bisque, I had the ham and cheese sandwich, which was really tasty:

P7150115.jpg

Brett ordered the beef short ribs and enjoyed it:

P7150114.jpg

Kathy raved about her quiche. She was sitting beside me so I snapped a quick picture (I didn't dare keep Danny and Derek from their meals though):

P7150116.jpg

And for dessert, crème brulee with a madeleine:

P7150120.jpg

We were so full after lunch we practically rolled out of the park. It was extremely hot out and time for another afternoon break.

Up next… MORE FOOD! Dinner at one of my favorites, Kona Café, and our first trip to Downtown Disney.

Great report so far! Can't wait for the rest! You always make your trip reports so fun to read :)

Thanks, MAD4NADZ! You know, you're not doing too bad yourself. :animwink: And I'm looking forward to more of yours! So far as I can tell, we haven't crossed paths yet.

Hi Kelly. You are so right about super trips... I've decided anytime Brett and I go with his parents we're going to try to add a few days of "us" time onto the end of the trips. This way we can make it a super trip with a little less super expense! Did your July 4th trip ever pan out?! I was looking for your TR, as well .

As for January, unfortunately we won't be there. It would have been so fun to meet up and say hello, you know, in the non cyber world. We couldn't commit to the Half before registration filled and we just don't have it in us to train for the full again so soon. We are hoping to be back for 2011. Are you still considering the Princess Half?!

Nope on the July 4th thing. As much as I really wanted to do a no-park WDW resort long weekend for the 4th when it got down to totalling up what it would cost us even with the fab deal on the room it would have cost a bit over $3K which we thought was a bit much. This has been a summer of saving and paying off bills so we crashed back down to reality pretty quickly. I'm actually proud of us. Normally we're more impulsive and want what we want when we want it so to use our brains and listen to the voice of reason is a good thing. I think we might be growing up...finally...well sorta. LOL! We ended up going to Atlanta & doing the fireworks & laser show at Stone Mountain. It wasn't WDW but it was an adventure in itself.

I don't know about the Princess Half. I really want to do it. The brutal summer has kept me hiding from the gazillion degree heat inside. I haven't had a good run since early May. A full mile run would probably kill me at this point. Isn't that awful? Maybe I should stop buying new dollies for my collection and invest in a good treadmill. I've packed on nearly 10 lbs. this summer. Grrrr!!! Once the kiddos are back in school in a couple weeks I'll be able to hit the pavement early enough in the morning to see how I'll do with it. Do you think 6 months is really long enough to train from a brutal measly little mile to 13 & keeping pace is possible???

You got to see Remy! Another of those I'd looove to see. And I think you described Daisy and why I adore her to a 'T'. Daisy's my girl.

I'm looovin' your report. I can't wait for the next installment!

Oh! And I'm gonna put together a little sumpin-sumpin for the May trip I took with my brother and his girls. It won't be a normal TR. I felt to crappy the whole time to actually take notes. I did good just to get out of bed and take a random picture. LOL!

Hi HollyBelle!! I knew you'd have a trip report up soon and I'm so glad I found it! I have been taking notes about your notes, I'm really enjoying your report!

First, I have never gone into Minnie's House. We have 3 boys so the girlie stuff usually get skipped. I think it is downright silly/creepy about the "daisies" on the porch. lol

You mentioned the really hot mulchy stuff in Pooh's Playful Spot. We had a similar problem back in May during the F&GF when my little man went to play at Tinkerbell's Fairy Playground. I think it is part of Disney's effort to be eco-friendly. I think it is hot black recycled rubber from tires or shoe soles...that would be my guess as to why they don't use something cooler.

My DH and I LOVE Wilderness Lodge! It is our favorite resort by far! We're hoping to splurge and stay there on our next trip! I love the boat transportation, so relaxing...and all the wonderful walkways through the woods. It is such a tranquil area of WDW.

Typhoon Lagoon is the only park we have yet to visit. We went to BB, and I have to agree, lots and lots of stairs...I was not entirely prepared for them. Great workout though!

I always find it funny during summer trips how folks take off when the rain starts. We're like you guys, we just consider it part of the adventure, and find a fun place to hide out and take a break.

My kids have to put together a lightsaber. That would be so fun. They're really into Star Wars. They usually get pirate swords, but they just don't last very long(makes sense, they are only like $3)

I have to agree with your conclusion surrounding kids and ITTBaB. My kids hated it. The youngest screamed and I took him out, the middle was downright ticked off at us for taking him, and our 9-year-old said he was, "Very disappointed with that show *frown*"

I love the tip about Remy! My kids just LOVE Ratatouille!

Well, I'm following along now, and enjoying your report! Can't wait for more! :sohappy:

So glad to hear you love the Wave. DW and I will have breakfast there next month and are really looking forward to it.
After losing a great breakfast option like Boatwright's at POR, we need all the resort breakfast options we can get.
Hopefully word of the Wave will get out.
Bay Lake tower will help bring 'em in as well!

I have two boys so I'm the only girl, too. Well, with the exception of my dog. LOL! I can't remember at what point it happened but somewhere along the line we went thru a transition from avoiding girl stuff like the plague to my little gentlemen wanting to take time to watch me enjoy some cutesy girly fun. Most trips they tolerate Toon Town and visits with princesses just for me. They're so sweet! I had to brag on 'em a little. LOL!

I've never seen the Daisy daisies either but I'll look for them next trip. I love all the details in Mickey & Minnie's houses.

...

Just so's you know, Minnie's house is not all girlie stuff. There is a lot of stuff that I think the boys will enjoy (at least I know I do!). And stuff for grups, too!

Things like a painting that's a parody of a Norman Rockwell (little kids won't get it), you can play back her answering machine messages (who do you think called her?). What do you think Minnie keeps in her fridge? (I won't spoil these things so you can discover for yourself). You push buttons on her stove and whimsical and unexpected things can happen!

So, although it is not all that earth shattereing, it does have that Disney magical touch, and it's not all just for girls either! There are cute little details that you might not notice at first, but it's fun to see if you can find all the hidden magic in ordinary things.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this! It's so fun to read!

You're welcome, Audrey. I'm so glad you're enjoying it!!

Ooh, nice living with the land pics! :sohappy:

Thanks, Jenn. It's such a nice peaceful ride!

Bummer on not getting to do the Fourth trip. I'm so proud of you for being such an adult, though. I need to take lessons from you! We're trying to be smart and NOT plan an October trip. But I hate the thought of missing Food and Wine this year, especially considering it's my favorite time of year at the World.

As for the half, I absolutely think you've still got time to train for it, but given my track record of "training" for running events I might not be the best person to ask. :ROFLOL: I would love to do the Princess one, and Brett would even be game for running it, if only that time of year worked out for us. Hah... I can see it now, Princess Brett! That's what his bib would say.

Daisy is one of my faves, too, and considering your love for her, you'll be none to happy with part of my next post.

Now get that mini May trip report started. :D

As always, loving the update!!! Man your breakfast at the Wave looked amazing and I don't even like eggs! :ROFLOL: Oh man, you got to meet the queen?? How lucky! I woll definitely be stoping my character connection, in the hopes of catching her and Marie.

Yep, you should definitely try the Wave. It's good for dinner, too. I'll get to that meal a little later on! If you're going to MNSSHP, you'll get to meet the Queen of Hearts there.

Hi, Melanee. I see you've moved already. At least Alabama is still within driving distance of the World. I hope you all are enjoying your new surroundings.

As for Minnie's house, I agree with both King Stefan and Sweetpee, you should really check it out and the boys will find some stuff they like, too.

Now that you mention it, I remember reading about your kids hating ITTBAB and the "pavement" stuff in your trip report. Seriously, it's scorching. Being eco-friendly is one thing, but at the expense of heat exhaustion. No thank you.

You aren't kidding about losing Boatwright's. I miss that place so much and really no other breakfast compares, though the Wave is delicious. If you're a coffee drinker, you'll appreciate the fact that they serve organic Colombian coffee and not the stuff you find most everywhere else.

After another relaxing afternoon at the resort, which might have even included a nap or two, we got ready and drove over to the Polynesian for our dinner reservations at Kona.

Derek ordered a Lapu Lapu. I tasted it and WOW….Hello, Bacardi 151! I haven’t hung out with you since college! That’s all I could taste. In my opinion, it wasn’t very good. But it sure looked fruity and fun:

P7150012.jpg

For dinner I had a med-rare Tuna Oscar with fried green tomatoes, lump crab, asparagus and wasabi hollandaise. It was delicious, and one of my favorite meals of the trip:

P7150015.jpg

Brett ordered the Miso-glazed Mahi Mahi with soba noodles and bok choy. Tasty:

P7150016.jpg

Who knows what everyone else ordered, I was so enthralled with my tuna and the macadamia nut butter for the bread that I could care less what else was going on at that table!

Throughout dinner we watched as the sky turned a crazy shade of black outside and the trees dangerously swayed, okay, swayed isn’t quite the right word… more like bent over to a point they looked like they might snap. We made a mad dash for the car before the sky opened up and witnessed an impressive lightning show while driving over to Downtown Disney. It didn’t last long though, because by the time we got there the rain had stopped and the sky was clear.

Downtown Disney was a crazy madhouse. The place was packed. So much so that it was hard to enjoy ourselves as we walked around. We wandered through World of Disney, the Lego store, and Once Upon a Toy.

Sorcerer Potato Head at Once Upon a Toy:

WDW2009295.jpg

I slipped away from the boys long enough to hit up Tren-D.

DSC01104copy.jpg

So the store seems quite a bit smaller than the former Summer Sands. I don’t know if it’s just that they’ve packed so much in it or if it is actually smaller, but it was definitely crowded and hard to maneuver around people. The clothes are cute; however, EVERYTHING has glitter or rhinestones or sparkles of some sort on it somewhere. And I don’t do glitter, rhinestones, sparkles or any other bits of glam for that matter. Bedazzling just isn’t my thing! I tend to only wear “Disney” shirts and such when I’m at the World, so those that I do have don’t get worn very often, meaning the $30-$45 price tag for a t shirt is a bit steep when compared to actual wear time. Very scientific, I know. Don’t get me wrong, I do have quite a few Disney related shirts… it’s just that I’ll rarely pay more than $10 for one.

Enough about the clothes… on to the décor.

LOVE the chandelier ceiling:

DSC01095.jpg

And Mickey peeking over the ceiling beam is a nice touch:

DSC01098copy.jpg

Edna Mode taking up a stand near the fitting rooms is by far my favorite bit of randomness:

DSC01094.jpg

I really like all the Minnie portraits… she was clearly wearing her snooty britches when she posed for most of them:

DSC01101.jpg

DSC01093.jpg

DSC01096.jpg

I love the little nod to Pluto really being Minnie Mouse's pup, not Mickey's. Poor thing has rhinestones on his collar:

DSC01102.jpg

Now, there’s one big, huge, monstrosity of an issue here. What’s that, you ask?

NO DAISY DUCK!

Seriously, not cool, Disney, not cool at all. Daisy embodies all things sparkly, cute, pink and girly and I’m appalled that she gets NO love at Tren-D. Honestly, I couldn’t find her anywhere. If she is there and I missed her, would someone please let me know?! I totally understand why Minnie gets top billing, and I’m okay with Tinkerbell flitting all about the place. I even noticed Mickey, Donald, and Pluto making cameo appearances. But no Daisy Duck. It’s a travesty!

We went over to Goofy’s Candy Company to drown my sorrows, but it was so packed we decided to come back another day. Eventually we made it back to the villas and Brett and I started packing up all our things for our resort switch the next morning. As we packed we made jokes of how we’d be slumming it at the All-Stars the rest of the week! Playing along was actually quite fun for me. Little did he know, little did he know.

Woohoo… next up, we’ll be checking in at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for Brett’s birthday celebration!

Wow! Remy looks great! Those are the first pictures I've seen, and I am amazed at what Disney can do.

If we go to Kona during our next trip, I will definitely get the tuna. That looked delicious.

As far as Tren-D goes, I haven't been there, but I hear you on not wanting to be Bedazzled.
