Lodge-hopping... from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 TR!

Last week we returned from our summer Disney fix so it’s time again for another monster trip report!! This one is sure to dwarf my previous reports in sheer size alone considering it was a 9 night/10 day stay at WDW and all our past trips have ranged from 3-5 night stays. I must say it’s a bit daunting, but I took detailed notes and am ready to relive our adventures (and possibly bore you with all the details)!!

The cast includes myself, Holly; the birthday boy, Brett; his parents, Kathy and Danny; and brother, Derek. Here’s one of the few pictures I have of us all from our December 2008 trip:

The planning stages of this trip went through many variations. So let’s start at the beginning… ever since the “Celebrate” theme was released I wanted to plan a trip for Brett’s birthday. We started putting it into action sometime in early April and not long after we settled on dates and made reservations, Brett’s parents invited us to join them on their summer trip to the Wilderness Lodge Villas. It just so happened to be close to the dates we were already looking at, so we talked about it and decided if we budgeted right we could do a super trip. Woohoo for super trips :sohappy:.

We changed our dates slightly to line up with theirs, and then I cancelled our ADRs and made some new ones. Since we were on a budget we decided a value resort was a must (and we should forego signature dining)… no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least that’s what Brett thought… I, however, had other plans! I got it into my head that it would be so cool to surprise him with a deluxe resort so we wouldn’t, you know, be slumming when we left the WL . Once I had my mind set I practically took up a vigil waiting for the AP resort rates to be released. And when they were I snagged a pool view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our four night stay! Oh yeah… and we couldn’t possibly celebrate his birthday without some wine and signature dining so I made reservations for Jiko!

To make a long story even longer, Brett called me at work one day and told me his parents had to make a slight change to their dates, which meant we would either have to do the same or lose some days of “our” trip. I was freaking out (and couldn’t tell him) because I just knew the AP rate would no longer be available… and it wasn’t. So I started calling once or twice a day, every day. I can still recite the confirmation number! I was in luck though, because after three weeks of calling the AP rate magically reappeared!!! I guess I’m sharing all this basically to say sometimes it pays to be persistent. Let me just tell you… keeping this secret nearly killed me, but it was totally worth it!

Okay, so now that we've gotten all of that out of the way… let us finally begin.

What a great report. I am sad to see it end. Someday when I am rich, I will hire you to come on trips, take hilarious pictures and write a wonderful report.
Chip n Dale look so real. I can almost see them move and hear their thoughts.
I am heading to the Beach Club in 4 days. Thanks for your help with getting to Sanaa (different thread) and getting me in the mood with your great report. I can't wait to see WDW at Xmas time through your next report.

Great spot for the Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade! I loved how you could see bits of the sign and actual Tree of Life. That really adds to the pics.

OMG you had my literaly LMAO when I saw that birthday card from The Wave!!! That's too funny!!!:ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL:
I hated seeing your trip come to an end! I expected to hear you say you watched Wishes on your last MK evening. We always do that. But I guess you'd been there for a long time and probably seen it a few times(I can't remember at this point! lol)

HollyBelle: "You know how, as much as you don’t want to leave, once you do, you just want to get home?! "

I just had to say that I totally know the feeling. It's like, "Well, poo, the trip is over, I want to go home NOW, because I'm bummed out!!" I almost feel sort of like it is irritating to have to drive 5 or 6 hours home after all that fun. Waaaa:cry:

I just loved your trip report!! It makes me miss the World so much! I'm hoping and praying we get to use the remainder of our ticket days before they expire Dec 23rd. Our trip "should" happen the last week of November/first week of December sometime. I hate this about the military, there is no such thing as planning a trip, it is called, "Hey, lets go!" and we go, that's about all the planning. I hope having to move and all the busy-ness we'll have won't overshadow getting away to the World one last time before we move across the dang country. (Anyway...) Thanks for writing your report, I enjoyed it all!!

Holly, I loved reading your trip report! I'm glad the two of you had a great vacation. Also, I agree about the Popeye ride at IoA. Overall it is just superior to Kali, especially on hot days.

Oooh... maybe I could make a career out of writing trip reports? I'm on standby, just give me a call when my services our needed. Just think, my report is over but you'll be there soaking up the real, live magic this weekend! Have fun.

Thanks, Melanee!! I was super excited about the MJJP location; it worked out perfectly for us. As for Wishes... surprisingly enough, we don't even watch it every evening when we're in the MK. You'll probably be shocked to hear we've only seen it from in front of the castle/Main Street area a couple times.   I hope you get the call to plan a last minute trip soon!

Thanks for reading it all, HopLow. Yeah, we really got a big kick out of the card.

Thank you, popsicletrees! Yeah, surprisingly enough, the Popeye ride is so good that I don't even mind getting wet on it... Kali just seems so lame when you compare the two. Shhh... don't tell anyone I said that. :lookaroun

This was just a super trip report! I'm sorry I stopped commenting part way through it, but I had to make a pause to do something else. We went to WDW ourselves for a week and a half! So I think I had an excuse!

So I was a little behind in my reading, and just caught up - and I'm so glad I did. Your TR helped me get over the "vacation is over" blues and has inspired me to start my own TR. Thanks so much again for sharing!

Awwww, KingStefan, that crash back to reality always bites for the hubby & me, too. Just hang in there and start planning for the next adventure. If you can't pick dates and all that right now you can at least start making a list of stuff you didn't do but want to or your most favorite things so you can be sure to do them again. I'll be looking for your TR!

Holly, sorry for the hijack there. I hate to see folks going thru the Disney Blues. :D
