Lodge-hopping... from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 TR!

Last week we returned from our summer Disney fix so it’s time again for another monster trip report!! This one is sure to dwarf my previous reports in sheer size alone considering it was a 9 night/10 day stay at WDW and all our past trips have ranged from 3-5 night stays. I must say it’s a bit daunting, but I took detailed notes and am ready to relive our adventures (and possibly bore you with all the details)!!

The cast includes myself, Holly; the birthday boy, Brett; his parents, Kathy and Danny; and brother, Derek. Here’s one of the few pictures I have of us all from our December 2008 trip:

IMG_1104.jpg

The planning stages of this trip went through many variations. So let’s start at the beginning… ever since the “Celebrate” theme was released I wanted to plan a trip for Brett’s birthday. We started putting it into action sometime in early April and not long after we settled on dates and made reservations, Brett’s parents invited us to join them on their summer trip to the Wilderness Lodge Villas. It just so happened to be close to the dates we were already looking at, so we talked about it and decided if we budgeted right we could do a super trip. Woohoo for super trips :sohappy:.

We changed our dates slightly to line up with theirs, and then I cancelled our ADRs and made some new ones. Since we were on a budget we decided a value resort was a must (and we should forego signature dining)… no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least that’s what Brett thought… I, however, had other plans! I got it into my head that it would be so cool to surprise him with a deluxe resort so we wouldn’t, you know, be slumming when we left the WL . Once I had my mind set I practically took up a vigil waiting for the AP resort rates to be released. And when they were I snagged a pool view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our four night stay! Oh yeah… and we couldn’t possibly celebrate his birthday without some wine and signature dining so I made reservations for Jiko!

To make a long story even longer, Brett called me at work one day and told me his parents had to make a slight change to their dates, which meant we would either have to do the same or lose some days of “our” trip. I was freaking out (and couldn’t tell him) because I just knew the AP rate would no longer be available… and it wasn’t. So I started calling once or twice a day, every day. I can still recite the confirmation number! I was in luck though, because after three weeks of calling the AP rate magically reappeared!!! I guess I’m sharing all this basically to say sometimes it pays to be persistent. Let me just tell you… keeping this secret nearly killed me, but it was totally worth it!

Okay, so now that we've gotten all of that out of the way… let us finally begin.

Loving your TR so far! I must admit, as annoying as your experience was on Gran Fiesta, I was chuckling at your description of it. Maybe someday a long time from now you will laugh also. Maybe.

From Norway we headed off to Mission: Space. I wasn’t feeling so hot, which was most likely due to a combination of fatigue, heat, and hunger; the lack of sleep, busyness, and work-related travel of the days leading up to our vacation were taking their toll on me. So the guys flew to Mars and back without me while I wandered around the Mission: Space Cargo Bay.

P7110077copy.jpg

While there I did spy some not so hidden Mickey’s, two of which I had never noticed before:

After the week’s first perusal of MouseGear, we met up with Brett’s parents outside The Seas with Nemo and Friends and took a journey into the deep.

WDW2009226.jpg

The angler fish was working and it caught me completely by surprise because I had gotten so used to the nothingness of that part of the ride. The Seas is such a great ride for filling in the gaps of time between all the other stuff you have planned out; you can almost always count on it being walk-on. After the ride we looked around in Sea Base Alpha for a Mr. Ray plush due to our new fascination with stingrays, which I’ll get to shortly. Alas, he’s one of the characters that didn’t make the cut. As soon as we exited the building we wound our way around it and into Coral Reef for our 6:30 pm dinner reservations.

After waiting 30-40 minutes for dinner we were finally seated. While not our first time at Coral Reef, it was our first time being at a table towards the back and I will say the view of the tank really is great from anywhere. While the tank is filled with all kinds of exciting creatures from sea turtles to sharks, I was fixated on the stingrays. They’re my new favorite from under the sea! They’re so beautiful and gentle and I love the way they move. In May we went on a Carnival cruise with my parents and in Grand Cayman we opted to swim with the stingrays in their natural habitat. And we’re not talking petting them on the edge of the beach; we were actually out there in the water surrounded by them. It was one of the coolest experiences ever! I have a newfound appreciation for and fascination with them.

I do apologize for the first of what I’m sure will be many tangents, it’s just that Brett and I couldn’t stop talking about them (or the experience) all throughout dinner. Speaking of dinner… I had the mahi mahi with pineapple chutney… I knew what I was going to order before we ever sat down because I’ve had it before and just love the flavors, although this is the first time I've seen bok choy on the plate. And it's inclusion really made no sense to me. Taste wise it didn't enhance the dish one bit, and I don't think it helped from a plating perspective either :

P7110090.jpg

Brett had the halibut (seasonal catch) served over mushroom and scallop risotto. He did say the risotto was overwhelmed by the truffle oil/sauce it was swimming in, making it very un-risotto-like in texture. You can kind of see what he means when looking at the picture:

P7110089.jpg

I can’t recall what the rest of the table had… probably because I didn’t want to make them all wait with forks poised in mid-air as I took my fabulous foodie pics! Brett’s not so lucky though; he’s stuck with me and my peculiarities!

When we left the restaurant the park was nice and breezy, as a shower had passed through and cooled things off a little. The fam went to ride a bit and Brett and I drug ourselves back to the room. I was hoping to get a good night’s sleep so I would feel better come morning and the first full day of our trip!

Hopefully I'll have all of Day 2 posted by tomorrow evening!

I'm glad to see Caballero Donald! We have a history with Fiesta Donald, as we call him! So, just how many characters are we going to see in this trip report? I would think with the number of days you were there you should have seen them all. :D

What a bunch of losers in Mexico! Too bad people like that have to ruin other's experiences!

Lovely pics of ws! :sohappy:

I love Fiesta Donald... good name for him! About the characters... let's just say we more than exceeded our daily quota, especially when Brett and I branched off on our own.

As for the guy in Mexico... I was just glad we were the ones stuck with him. I would hate for a family who had never experienced the ride before to have been so unlucky. I did get a good laugh out of it though, especially when I realized how old he was.

Thanks, PotteryGal. I'll admit it was definitely funny. And of course, I should thank him because those moments make for great trip reporting!

On another note, I was just reading your PTR and you are going to have so much fun... I LOVE the Contemporary!!

October's not too far off... it'll be here before you know it! And it's my favorite time of year at Disney. Have fun!

Thanks! It might be a while on the scrapbook pages... I still haven't started scrapping our recent cruise with my parents. I better hop to it though, especially considering I plan on giving my mom a book for her birthday (which was in May )!

Day 2, Sunday, July 12: Magic Kingdom/Silver Creek Springs/Downtown Disney

Sunday morning we woke up refreshed and ready for our 7:45 am breakfast reservations at Ohana. Mmm… I can just taste the POG juice now. It’s a mixture of passion fruit, orange and guava and I crave the stuff! Our server told us Stitch is the official POG juice maker at Ohana… just one more reason for me to love him!

We opted out of having the family picture taken and it wasn’t until we were seated I realized we didn’t get leis; I guess they give them to you when you take the picture. DRAT! I love those pretty pink ones. We were the third table over from where the characters come out and it was so much fun watching them make an appearance. Pluto was hilarious! We watched him go from table to table on all fours. He kept sneaking up on people and it was great entertainment. Overall though, I felt like the characters moved past our table rather quickly. I don’t think we got pictures of any of them with Kathy and Danny.

Our server gave me a LARGE to-go cup of POG juice for the road and let me just tell you kids… every now and then too much of a good thing really can make you want to throw up your breakfast!

We did manage to make it over to the Magic Kingdom in time to catch the opening show. What I wouldn’t give to be that family… not so much because I want to open the park, although that would be very cool. But more for the picture taking opportunities a train ride with all those characters would bring!

As soon as we crossed into Town Square we were off and racing down Main Street with everyone else. Funny thing though, instead of blazing a path to Frontierland with all the other thrill seekers, we decided it was a good morning to hit up Fantasyland. So off we went to join the great stroller race for Peter Pan’s Flight, Dumbo, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Snow White’s Scary Adventure.

I love this Snow White mural at the beginning of the ride:

A self portrait (taken after a thrilling 90 second tour of Fantasyland from our very own flying elephant):

And I just love Timothy:

Upping the thrills a bit, we decided to hop on a teacup and join in the festivities at the Mad Tea Party:

After spinning in teacups what could be better than a high speed chase around the Tomorrowland Speedway? Nothing, right?! Ummm… yeah. I will admit this was only my second time ever on the Speedway. The first was many trips ago when Brett and I got all wined up at dinner and decided the Speedway was calling our names. And I must say it’s much more enjoyable when you’re three sheets to the wind! The good thing though is I now have enough pictures to make a great Speedway scrapbook page.

The Tomorrowland Speedway... the crookedness of the picture makes it so much more exciting (actually, I don’t know why but I used the tilted camera approach for many different pictures on this trip:shrug:):

Anxiously waiting our turn:

Next up was Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. But before getting on the ride I had to get some advice and pointers on how to become a galactic hero. Unfortunately for me, Buzz didn’t divulge any secrets; he just gave me a thumbs up… as if his support alone could up my score. It didn't !

Brett and I split up from the others and headed for Toontown. We’d recently read that some very random characters had been coming out at the teardrop (and I’m talking very random… think Francis from “A Bug’s Life”). We knew finding characters back there would be hit or miss but decided our best bet would be sometime in the morning. There weren’t any characters out when we first got there so we decided to take a little tour of Minnie’s house.

P7170112.jpg

I found her reading material to be quite comical:

P7120161.jpg

And something I’ve never noticed before… she has a Daisy plant blooming on the back porch:

P7120163copy.jpg

We wound our way out of Minnie’s and back to the teardrop where we found some characters! Turk, Rafiki and King Louie were all out. While they were random for the teardrop, each can be found at the Animal Kingdom on a regular basis so we were a bit disappointed.

Gorillas:

P7120174.jpg

Who can pass up everyone’s favorite mandrill?

P7120173.jpg

I politely asked one of the management cm’s (not sure if he’s management, but he wasn’t one of the character attendants that wears the yellow/white shirts) about characters at the teardrop and he totally blew me off. While I understand they have to be very obscure because it isn’t a designated character spot, I also wasn’t asking for character specifics or a commitment to times of the day.

This brings me to a little issue I have with the lack in variety we get with characters these days. I’m all for having dedicated places to meet the popular characters (Epcot Character Spot, Toontown Hall of Fame, Camp Minnie Mickey, etc.). I would go so far as to say it’s a necessity because I think those characters should always be available to meet. However, what happened to mixing it up a little bit? I mean, the Town Square character set has been the same for a WHOLE year now. And you can’t say there isn’t a demand for the opportunity to meet rare/random characters. It’s talked about almost daily on the boards. We did end up finding some great random characters a little later in the trip, so I should stop with the rant already, but it’s still something that bothers me.

From Toontown we headed back into Fantasyland to wait on Brett’s family so we could all head over to Liberty Square together. While we were waiting we wandered around Pooh’s Playful Spot. Holy smokes, whoever chose to put the dark flooring down over there was out of his mind… it was blazing and felt 10 degrees hotter than the regular pavement. I went to Eeyore’s Gloomy Place, but he wasn’t there:

Tigger waved hello to us as he walked by:

P7120178copy.jpg

Soon we found Brett’s family and made our way to the newly refurbed Hall of Presidents. I really enjoyed the new video. I love the addition of Morgan Freeman and the focus the new show puts on uplifting our nation.

P7120179copy.jpg

After visiting with the Presidents we took a tour of the Haunted Mansion, which was great as always. The park was starting to get a wee bit too crowded so we decided to go back to the Wilderness Lodge for some lunch and pool time. We took the boat, which is so relaxing. And I love the walkway that leads from the boat launch past the geyser at the Lodge.

Back on land we went straight to Roaring Fork to grab a couple of flatbread pizzas. Rarely do Brett and I do counter service, so I was a bit surprised by how small Roaring Fork actually is. I guess the only resort counter service locations I’ve seen much of are the ones situated just off the lobbies at the values. And they’re massive, especially by comparison.

P7120190.jpg

An individual flatbread in all it's greasy glory:

P7120191.jpg

We enjoyed a fabulous afternoon, which among us included swimming, lazing around and napping. Oh how I fell in love with the concept of a super trip! Not feeling pressured to squeeze everything in and do it all in a few days is wonderful. It might have spoiled me a bit.

Kathy decided she needed a breather from the heat so she stayed in the room while the rest of us went to check out Silver Creek Springs. After much searching we found a few loungers together and got situated. The thing is the pool really wasn’t all that busy; however, there were towels on most all of the chairs. I don’t necessarily think people were saving the chairs, I think they simply didn’t return their towels to the bin when they left, but there’s really no way to know. As you can see in the picture, it really wasn’t crowded:

silversprings2.jpg

P7120200.jpg

After awhile the boys started dropping like flies. First Brett made his way back to the room to take a nap, then Derek took off for the gym, and the next time I opened my eyes Danny was nowhere in sight. Before I knew it, it was 3pm and the pool party was getting started. First off they had some hula hoop contests. And, wow… some of those kids in the 9-12 age group were amazing. To declare a winner they finally had to make the remaining kids hula with three hoops at once while turning in a circle. Next up was a dance party followed by musical bear paws, the WL version of musical chairs.

I’m not sure what else was planned for the pool party because the clouds started getting dark and I could tell the sky was going to open up so I reluctantly gathered my things and made for the Villas.

For dinner that night we had reservations at T-Rex. The area out front was chaotic, but luckily we didn’t have to wait too long to be seated. I’m still a little confused as to why they created such a teeny tiny gift shop area. It just seems odd when you consider the size of the restaurant and the size of its sister gift shop at the Rainforest. We had a great table at the edge of the fire room and the food was good, but there wasn’t much to write home about until Derek ordered the meteor bites for dessert. Delicious!

WDW2009012.jpg

Our table was right in front of this guy:

P7120209.jpg

And my favorite part of the restaurant, the tentacled bar:

P7120210copy.jpg

When Brett went to the restroom he overheard a conversation between a father and son who had apparently just arrived at Disney for their first trip. The father said something along the lines of “…and just think, this is only a restaurant. Can you imagine what the parks are going to be like?!” to his son. Brett said it reminded him of the first time he took me to Disney because I was just in awe of everything!

It was EMH at the Magic Kingdom that night so we made our way back over there via boat… I love that thing! We entered the park as the first showing of SpectroMagic was making its way down Main Street. It took us a while but we finally made it to Adventureland to join the pirates as they pillaged. I hadn’t been feeling too good most of the afternoon and evening and by the time we got off Pirates of the Caribbean, I knew I needed to call it a day. Brett insisted upon walking me to the bus before heading back into the park for more fun; it was unnecessary, but rather sweet! I was the only person sitting on the bus, waiting at the MK bus stop with the driver, and all of a sudden we saw a sea of people in the distance… Wishes must be over! It was funny because the driver closed the doors and took off saying “Let’s have one more peaceful run before the madness starts!” I couldn’t have agreed more with the man! I crawled straight into bed when I got back and thankfully felt good as new by morning!

The next installment: Typhoon Lagoon!!
