Lodge-hopping... from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 TR!

Last week we returned from our summer Disney fix so it’s time again for another monster trip report!! This one is sure to dwarf my previous reports in sheer size alone considering it was a 9 night/10 day stay at WDW and all our past trips have ranged from 3-5 night stays. I must say it’s a bit daunting, but I took detailed notes and am ready to relive our adventures (and possibly bore you with all the details)!!

The cast includes myself, Holly; the birthday boy, Brett; his parents, Kathy and Danny; and brother, Derek. Here’s one of the few pictures I have of us all from our December 2008 trip:

IMG_1104.jpg

The planning stages of this trip went through many variations. So let’s start at the beginning… ever since the “Celebrate” theme was released I wanted to plan a trip for Brett’s birthday. We started putting it into action sometime in early April and not long after we settled on dates and made reservations, Brett’s parents invited us to join them on their summer trip to the Wilderness Lodge Villas. It just so happened to be close to the dates we were already looking at, so we talked about it and decided if we budgeted right we could do a super trip. Woohoo for super trips :sohappy:.

We changed our dates slightly to line up with theirs, and then I cancelled our ADRs and made some new ones. Since we were on a budget we decided a value resort was a must (and we should forego signature dining)… no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least that’s what Brett thought… I, however, had other plans! I got it into my head that it would be so cool to surprise him with a deluxe resort so we wouldn’t, you know, be slumming when we left the WL . Once I had my mind set I practically took up a vigil waiting for the AP resort rates to be released. And when they were I snagged a pool view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our four night stay! Oh yeah… and we couldn’t possibly celebrate his birthday without some wine and signature dining so I made reservations for Jiko!

To make a long story even longer, Brett called me at work one day and told me his parents had to make a slight change to their dates, which meant we would either have to do the same or lose some days of “our” trip. I was freaking out (and couldn’t tell him) because I just knew the AP rate would no longer be available… and it wasn’t. So I started calling once or twice a day, every day. I can still recite the confirmation number! I was in luck though, because after three weeks of calling the AP rate magically reappeared!!! I guess I’m sharing all this basically to say sometimes it pays to be persistent. Let me just tell you… keeping this secret nearly killed me, but it was totally worth it!

Okay, so now that we've gotten all of that out of the way… let us finally begin.

Don't worry... there's more tilted pictures to come, Jenn! Maybe even a tilted character picture or two !

love love LOVE the trip report! i can't wait to read about the other 8 days of your vaca! my trip is only 49 days away now so this is really helping the time go by! :D

Oooh... 49 days away-hopefully I'll be done with my report by then . Before you know it you'll be there. I love the fall season at WDW; it's my favorite!

LOVE your pictures.

You have a great name, too
Holly is an amazing name ..
Sigh.
[That wasnt sarcasm, it was us sharing a name]

Thanks, Holly :sohappy::sohappy:

Great job so far can't wait to hear more:D

Thank you, Disney<333! I don't think I'll be getting a new post up today, but hopefully tomorrow I'll have it ready!

I can't wait for the bit where you surprise him with AKL ... hurry up :ROFLOL:

Oooh... yes, that happens to be my favorite part. That'll be on Day 6!

Mmm... POG juice :D!

The teardrop is in the very back of Toontown. Go down past the train station and it sits back in the corner around the side of the Hall of Fame tent. I've always heard that it's a training area, which is why characters appear somewhat sporadically and at random. Don't know if this is true, just what I've read.

In the past we've met Jane (from Tarzan), Max (Goofy's son), Rabbit (from Winnie the Pooh), and the White Rabbit (from Alice in Wonderland) back there among some other less random ones. About 5 years ago Brett was back there and met Rebecca Cunningham (from Talespin)... now talk about random!!

So go check it out... maybe you'll get really lucky!

Holly!! Considering how much I hound you for a trip report, you would think I would be better about watching for it to start!!

I'm so excited to read it all!! I love it so far! I hope you kept feeling better. I lol'd at the "melt your face off heat". We're about to experience that and I'm not sure I'm prepared!!

I love all the pictures!! Your panoramic ones are awesome!!

Another great trip report! Sarah and I are totally copying some of your guys' character poses. We try to keep it unique (and to interact "oddly" with them for fun), but some of our standby poses have grown a bit old in the tooth, sadly.

Many great shots, too!

Count me in as a lover of POG juice! I was so sad when we moved from Hawai'i and I couldn't get it anymore. The actually served it on the inter-island flights. :)

Oh and isn't the boat to and from the WL the best? DH and I spent so much time at the MK because of that thing. Nighttime was our favorite time of day to ride, especially going past the Contemporary...ahh...

Thanks, Tammy! By my calculations you are probably at WDW right now, enjoying that melt-your-face-off heat!! I hope you're having a blast :sohappy:!

Thanks, WDWFigment! You're so right about standby poses getting old! We're always trying to mix it up and make comments to the characters that will get them to do something out of the norm. Hopefully the characters enjoy it, as well, because I'm sure the same 'ol, same 'ol gets stale after awhile. We have quite a few more new/fun poses to come, so stay tuned.

Oh wow... I should have known POG juice was authentic to the Hawaiian culture. Now tell me, you haven't found a place to order it from, have you? I'm guessing the answer is no . And if it's yes, I'm sure I can't afford it!

And I totally agree with nighttime being the best for the boat rides. Always so peaceful!

Thanks HollyBelle!!! I will definitely be checking the teardrop out!!! And that sure is some randomness with the characters!!! Tailspin??? Geese, that's old school right there!! But I did love watching it thou! :ROFLOL:

Yep... Love the Disney Afternoon! If I can find the picture of Rebecca Cunningham I'll scan it in and post it.

Great TR - thank you so much for sharing!! :sohappy:

Thanks, Fallen Angel!

Holly...looks like you guys had a blast. However, I am getting extremely impatient. I can't wait to hear about the next 7 days....i'm dying over here, lol.

Day 3, Monday, July 13: Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Monday morning we woke up bright and early and made our way down to Whispering Canyon for breakfast. We’ve had breakfast here 3-4 times and not once during breakfast have the servers been fully in character, there’s the occasional throwing of the napkins and transference of ketchups but that’s it really. I’m guessing this is because we always eat early (between 7:30-8:00) and are usually some of the first people in the restaurant. It’s just a much different atmosphere than dinnertime. The food is good, but it doesn’t rank as one of my favorite breakfast spots on property. The title will always be held by Boatwright’s!

A quiet Whispering Canyon:

After breakfast we went back to the room to sunblock up and get ready for Typhoon Lagoon. We arrived at the park around 9:30:

P7130093copy.jpg

As we made our way to the lockers we ran into Stitch! Aloha:

P7130045.jpg

I took this picture of Brett as we were walking through the park. I'm guessing many of you will appreciate his tattoo. He got it a couple months before we first started dating, and it kills him that I never got to experience the ride:

P7130047.jpg

Can anyone help me find the Crush ‘n’ Gusher? Judging by the fact that the water coaster has been open over four years now, I'm guessing there aren’t any plans to redo the maps:

P7130051.jpg

First stop was of course the dilapidated fruit processing center, otherwise known as the Crush 'n' Gusher! Woo Woo! I love water coasters. While Summit Plummet over at Blizzard Beach really gets my heart racing and wins when it comes to thrills and effectively turning my bikini bottom into a thong, I favor the Crush ‘n’ Gusher for its ability to make me laugh from start to finish every single time.

After numerous rides on the pineapple plunger, coconut crusher and banana blaster, we made our way over to Mount Mayday to take in the rest of the slides. Of course, after all that stair climbing what could be better than lazing in Castaway Creek?! Nothing, that’s what!

P7130056.jpg

I’m of the camp that views the lazy river as an all day attraction. While others use it as a thoroughfare to get from one side of the park to the other; not me! If I’m getting in the lazy river, you better believe I’ll be making no less than a full circle… I could stay there all day. In fact, I think I did just that.

Lots 'o' Laziness:

We got lunch at Leaning Palms; Brett and I shared a pizza and chicken strips meal, which my uppity-no-counter-service-self will admit was quite good! This was the first time Brett and I have stayed at one of the water parks long enough to have lunch there. Usually we get to water parks at opening and leave just before lunch time so we can fit in something else. We’ll just have to add “more time to relax and enjoy a water park” to my “Super Trip of Awesomeness” list. Yep, I’m being spoiled.

I think Castaway Creek called my name as soon as we were done with lunch, so back to the laziness I went. The day’s afternoon shower began and cleared the park out nicely; something I don’t understand at all, especially at a water park! After about 20 minutes the rain stopped and the sun was back out.

The impending shower, as seen from Castaway Creek:

P7130082.jpg

At some point I decided to go back to the locker to reapply sunscreen, which was more of an ordeal than necessary. There was a couple using the locker right below ours so I just hung back waiting for them to get things in order, no big deal… or so I thought. I didn’t realize I’d be privy to marital discord over something as trivial as sunscreen. She wanted him to put it on, while he claimed he didn’t need it. It was turning into a classic test of wills. When it appeared the sunscreen argument was veering off course to more important relationship issues, I politely asked if I could get in to the locker above theirs. 30 seconds later I was happy to be out of their way. You know, I wonder how burnt the man was the next day, and whether or not she continually told him “I told you so.”

Sometime around 3pm we decided to gather our things and make our way out of the park and back to the lodge to get ready for our evening at the Studios. All in all, it was a perfect day at the Lagoon.

Until next time, Miss Tilly:

Back at the villas Brett and I were showered and ready to go before everyone else, so we went down to the lobby to relax a little and take in the ambience. Relaxation turned into a brutally competitive game of checkers where my love tricked me into a corner. As you can see in the picture, he could barely contain his satisfaction:

IMG_1741copy.jpg

I demanded a rematch, but we didn’t have time. I’d have to wait until later to get him back.

We made it to DHS around 5 pm and headed straight to Toy Story Midway Mania. We got in the standby line which was projected to take an hour. Now, if it was just Brett and I, we would have totally skipped it and come back later because we just don’t like to stand in lines. But everyone else wanted to ride, so stand in line we did! It ended up taking approximately an hour and 15 minutes to get to the load area. Because of this I have entirely too many TSMM queue pictures.

During the practice scene with Jessie and Buzz I couldn’t figure out what was wrong… until I realized I wasn’t wearing my 3D glasses! I guess I was so excited to finally get on the ride that I forgot to put them on. I must say, I love this ride, and it’s much better in 3D!

After exiting TSMM we went straight to the Sci-Fi Dine In to check in for our dinner reservations.

P7130230.jpg

P7130231.jpg

We were lead to our convertible just in time to see the cartoon with all the aliens and monsters running by. Donald Duck’s appearance in this one is my favorite, and judging by the applause at the drive-in, I’d say I’m not alone! Brett’s partial to the trailer for “The Amazing Colossal Man” and loves Garco’s cameo with Walt. And who doesn’t get a good laugh out of “Cat-Women of the Moon!?”

After dinner we went over to Star Tours. The guys rode while Kathy and I wandered around Tatooine Traders for a bit. In the course of 20 minutes we probably watched 12-15 kids build a lightsaber. They were turning them out like $20 hotcakes, and this was at a time when the area wasn’t all that busy. I can’t imagine how many they crank out before and after the Jedi Training Academy. I’d be willing to bet it’s even more popular than Build-a-Dino over at T-Rex, and that’s saying something! That being said, who doesn’t need his or her very own lightsaber! I know I want one.

Tatooine Traders:

P7130236copy.jpg

P7130238copy.jpg

We walked right by the American Idol Experience in favor of Sunset Boulevard. I know we need to make time for the show, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. Maybe next time.

IMG_1775.jpg

We headed down Sunset Boulevard to catch the park’s two most thrilling rides. We’ve become very accustomed to using the single rider line on Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster and tonight was no different. I can’t remember the last time we stood in the outdoor queue for RNR. After getting to the concert in style, we checked in to the Hollywood Tower Hotel and took a trip to the Twilight Zone.

It was closing in on 10 pm and EMH was coming to an end so we called it a day, a good one at that, and headed back to the Wilderness Lodge.

Next: A Kona breakfast and an Animal Kingdom morning!

Yes, we figure a stop at Tatooine Traders will be a must next Tuesday - my son is just starting to get into Star Wars - and what is your take on the food at Sci-Fi? We're going there for lunch.

At least the lightsaber's are well-priced, in my opinion; for $20 you really do get a lot. You get to pick your color and I believe the handle has sound effects, which is pretty cool.

As for Sci-Fi, we choose it for it's atmosphere. While nothing on the dinner menu really appeals to me, the lunch menu is great. They have a really good turkey sandwich and the burger is always good. So, if you're ever there for dinner and don't love the options, my suggestion would be to ask for the burger. I'm one of those people who doesn't like to ask for special treatment of any sort, but in this case I think it's common practice as people in the cars on either side of us always have burgers, too. I've done this on more than one ocassion and the servers never bat an eye.

ETA: I just read you'll be there for lunch. Sorry for the dinner tangent!

Loving the update!!!

Thanks, disneygirl!!

Thanks, Angie. I almost feel like I didn't stop writing, considering just after I finished my cruise report I went to WDW and started this report!

You'll have to start planning a trip! You could always find a cruise out of Port Canaveral and add a couple Disney days to it. Have I talked you into it yet?!

Day 4, Tuesday, July 14: Animal Kingdom/Magic Kingdom

Let’s begin our day with a hidden Mickey… Kona carpet style:

P7140246.jpg

Kona Cafe used to be my second favorite breakfast in all the world. With Boatwright’s out of the running though, it is now my most anticipated breakfast of the trip! Who doesn’t love Tonga Toast?! Well, Brett doesn’t. But he’s a weirdo.

P7140245.jpg

The best WDW fruit plate I’ve ever seen:

P7140244.jpg

Kathy always gets the fruit plate when we go to Kona. It looks so good and I keep telling myself I should order it sometime, but I just can’t bear to part with my strawberry compote covered Tonga Toast. That strawberry compote is heaven in a carafe!

After a most satisfying start to the day we hopped in the car and sped over to the Animal Kingdom! I’d say it was around 9:15ish when we arrived… to celebrate the day:

P7140310.jpg

And we immediately ran into Brer Bear:

P7140255copy.jpg

You know, the Animal Kingdom is the only park where you can show up and meet characters without actually having an entry ticket. Interesting.

With all of us in agreement we went straight to Asia in search of the Forbidden Mountain. When we got there single rider was down so we grabbed fastpasses and hopped in the standby line, which was a short 15 minute wait. I don’t think it can be said enough, how wonderful this queue is. We rarely stand in it, so I take the time to enjoy the details when we do.

Nothing like a little early morning sun glare to fade out a picture:

IMG_1794.jpg

Yeti Mandir-Basically, the message here is “don’t disrespect his temple, or the big guy’ll get you,” which is a moot point because he’s going to get you before it’s over with anyhow:

IMG_1793copy.jpg

Before getting to the front of the line we’d already decided who was riding with whom: Kathy and I, Derek and Brett, and Danny solo. What was great is Kathy and I were sent to the very front with Derek and Brett right behind us. Now, I usually prefer the back, but being in the very front with Kathy was so much fun… mostly because she was freaking out and the guys were tormenting her the entire time. We all got a good laugh out of it!
