Lodge-hopping... from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 TR!

Last week we returned from our summer Disney fix so it’s time again for another monster trip report!! This one is sure to dwarf my previous reports in sheer size alone considering it was a 9 night/10 day stay at WDW and all our past trips have ranged from 3-5 night stays. I must say it’s a bit daunting, but I took detailed notes and am ready to relive our adventures (and possibly bore you with all the details)!!

The cast includes myself, Holly; the birthday boy, Brett; his parents, Kathy and Danny; and brother, Derek. Here’s one of the few pictures I have of us all from our December 2008 trip:

IMG_1104.jpg

The planning stages of this trip went through many variations. So let’s start at the beginning… ever since the “Celebrate” theme was released I wanted to plan a trip for Brett’s birthday. We started putting it into action sometime in early April and not long after we settled on dates and made reservations, Brett’s parents invited us to join them on their summer trip to the Wilderness Lodge Villas. It just so happened to be close to the dates we were already looking at, so we talked about it and decided if we budgeted right we could do a super trip. Woohoo for super trips :sohappy:.

We changed our dates slightly to line up with theirs, and then I cancelled our ADRs and made some new ones. Since we were on a budget we decided a value resort was a must (and we should forego signature dining)… no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least that’s what Brett thought… I, however, had other plans! I got it into my head that it would be so cool to surprise him with a deluxe resort so we wouldn’t, you know, be slumming when we left the WL . Once I had my mind set I practically took up a vigil waiting for the AP resort rates to be released. And when they were I snagged a pool view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our four night stay! Oh yeah… and we couldn’t possibly celebrate his birthday without some wine and signature dining so I made reservations for Jiko!

To make a long story even longer, Brett called me at work one day and told me his parents had to make a slight change to their dates, which meant we would either have to do the same or lose some days of “our” trip. I was freaking out (and couldn’t tell him) because I just knew the AP rate would no longer be available… and it wasn’t. So I started calling once or twice a day, every day. I can still recite the confirmation number! I was in luck though, because after three weeks of calling the AP rate magically reappeared!!! I guess I’m sharing all this basically to say sometimes it pays to be persistent. Let me just tell you… keeping this secret nearly killed me, but it was totally worth it!

Okay, so now that we've gotten all of that out of the way… let us finally begin.

Hi Holly!! I'm so glad you're still writing!! I loved the birthday suprise! I agree, AKL has the best theming on property. It's so so gorgeous. Love Chip and Dale trying to find the pool, too!

First, love how you surprised Brett with AKL like that.

Second, of all the pictures of you two posing with the characters, my favorite has to be as the Mary Poppins penguins.

Third, I am so getting my picture taken with Dug on this upcoming trip.

Yay, you got more done!

I love the birthday surprise! It sounds like it turned out wonderfully! :sohappy:

Your pictures are all great! I love the animal kingdom lodge ones! The room looks great! How funny that Chip and Dale couldn't find the pool!

Thanks for the info on the characters at the studios. Guess where we'll be at 5 pm? :D Love all your character shots!

Can't wait for more!

Great report! Thanks so much for writing!

The birthday surprise was very cool. “We’re not going to the All-Stars, are we?!”:ROFLOL:

Isn't the Turf Club great? Good for dinner, too! A little-known gem. Particularly good for super trips, since it takes a while to get there and back. But IMHO it's well worth it. Anyone staying at the SSR should definitely try to find an evening to eat there.

I LOVED hearing about Dug chasing the chipmunks! How magical is that?!

Can't wait to hear more!

Loooove the updates! I just got home from a week in Pensacola visiting my Gramma...with noooo internet. I know I laid in my bed wondering how your trip report was moving along at least a couple nights. LOL! The birthday surprise was so cool. You & Brett are so freakin' sweet I could just sop y'all up with a biscuit. LOL!

First of all, the Lapu Lapu. In January this year I had one and it was a yummy fruity drink of perfection. In May I think they must've had a new bartender who was out to drain the liquor bottles. The same drink was like straight up 151 with a dash of juice. It was strooong and nothing at all like the one I had earlier in the year. I even told our waiter at Ohana that the drink was horrible...so he brought me another one that wasn't much better. Go figure. Ugh. Tequila. Even tho the now legendary 'Jose Incident' was just over 10 years ago, I still can't bring myself to drink the stuff. :hurl: Jose was out to get me...for days... :hurl: If you like tequila you'll be trying the new tequila bar at Mexico on your next trip, huh? I'll take your word for how it is. LOL!

Lovin' your pics of AKL. You're getting me so pumped for January. I really, really hope the old man's project schedule doesn't ruin it. Tell me about Victoria Falls because I can't find useful info on it and no pics at all so thanks for yours. I know they serve drinky-drinks in the evenings but also caught a single sentence on another site that hinted that they do coffees in the morning. Do you know if it doubles as a coffee bar??? (((crossing fingers for a coffee bar))) The Uzima pool looks totally fab, too. I can't wait!

I'm pea-green with envy over the Up characters. I looooved that movie so much. The pics are great. I especially love Carl's cane. That's just too cool. Squirrel! LOL! I wish they'd still be around in January but I'm sure they won't be. Grrrr! More characters I'd love to meet but have little chance of catching.... (I'd also love to meet Louis & Wilbur from Meet the Robinsons. It's one of my big favs.)

Okay. I'll stop talking now. Write more soon! I'm on the edge of my seat here...or...er...my pillow. LOL!

I have a friend who is the same way about bourbon! Talks about the "bourbon incident", and if her DH and I want to drink bourbon together, we have to go into another room!

For Victoria Falls, I've never been, but I swear that I found some info last night while researching my own trip - I just can't find it at the moment. I'll keep looking for you!

Thanks, Tammy. Now we just need to find the funds to stay in a savannah view room!!

Thanks, sleepybear. The surprise was so much fun for me. Have fun with Dug. Apparently he's not out for every set, so you might want to check with a CM in the area to see what time he's usually there. I know we saw him around 11 am and 5 pm.

This has been one of my favorite trip reports that I have read on the whole site! It's been a pleasure to read! x

Thanks for such kind words angelbunni!! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Chip and Dale loved the AKL... we'll see more of them later! And I figured of all people you would truly enjoy the meet and greet info!!

I love all your pics Holly - I felt like most of mine were more blurry than I would like. Can't wait to hear more!

You know, I was having the same issue. I used two different cameras interchangeably throughout the trip (an olympus and a sony) and both were producing some blurry pics. I can't figure it out though, because then I'd get a great one two seconds later.

Great report! Thanks so much for writing!

You're welcome, KingStefan. We need to take your advice and try the Turf Club for dinner, as we've only eaten there for lunch. And yeah, the characters are, in my opinion, one of the MOST magical parts of WDW!

Oh no... no internet at Gramma's!!! I would have died. I'm so attached to and dependent upon my internet that one week would have felt like months! I feel your pain.

Interesting about the Lapu Lapu because I was expecting something fruity. And just was totally unprepared for the kick in the face I got from that bacardi 151. Funny... your tequila is my vodka. I shudder just thinking about vodka shots.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the coffee bar question. I'll have to go look at the little newsletter they give you at check-in and see what I can find. I didn't know there was a possibility for your January trip to get swept up... I so hope that doesn't happen. Uzima Springs is great, but the slide over at the new Kidani pool is AWESOME. I'm sure your boys will love it! I'll post pictures in a future installment.

Louis, Wilbur and Bowler Hat Guy!!!!! They're at the top of my list, too. We just missed them by a few days that spring they were out. I really, really, do not understand why they create such wonderful characters and then retire them. The Bolt gang was only out briefly, as well. It's bogus!

Thank you, disneygirl. You'll want to be at the Magic of Disney Animation around 5pm. They do two alternating sets until 6:20 pm. So you'll get one group from 5-5:20, then they'll switch out with the other from 5:20-5:40. And then alternate back, like so, for the next 40 minutes. I don't know how long it's been going on, but I hope they're still doing it during your trip. Good luck!

I know I'm a big weirdo when it comes to my coffee bar coffees. That was my favorite thing about staying at the Poly: the Kona coffee bar. I was there every morning. :slurp:

Oh no... no internet at Gramma's!!! I would have died. I'm so attached to and dependent upon my internet that one week would have felt like months! I feel your pain.

Yeah, Gramma's house is always a treat for me so no internet access is a trade-off. If I get truly out-of-my-mind hard-up for a fix I can always run up to the Starbucks that's around the corner. I'm a Gold Card member so I get 1 hour of free access every day. I'm thinking since we'll be staying in the Kilimanjaro Club they'll have plenty of coffee in the lounge. I think I even saw where a lot of the club lounges at the different deluxes now have espresso machines which would be perfect. I'll be down there whipping up lattes every morning! LOL! I didn't know Jambo House guests could use the Kidani Village pool. I was thinking they couldn't. Seems like when we did the DVC tour for the AKV's when it was at Saratoga the salesman really played up the Kidani pool/water playground as oober-exclusive for that village. If we can use it, tho, I think we'll make some time to partake. The boys will love it. The 'potential' for the January trip lies in the project the hubby has been working finishing up around that time. As of right now it looks like they'll be extending out to February but still Exxon might not like if he takes a week off that close to the end. Both his parents who are also going in January work the same project. His dad's the project manager so that helps some. There's just a lot up in the air with this project ending and transitioning to the next project which, thankfully, contracts are in place and is in the works as we speak. I totally agree on the retired characters. Oh how I'd loooove to meet some of these guys. The Up! gang, Louis, Wilbur, & Bowler Hat Guy, and the Bolt characters would be awesome. Rhino made that movie for me. Oh! And how about additional characters for the Pixar films? I'd looove to meet Boo from Monsters Inc. ((That's my nickname for my youngest: Boo)) Or Rex, Hamm, or Potato from Toy Story. How hard would it be to set up another animatronic Remy with his human counterparts and maybe Emile so guests could walk up and do a quick photo?

I'm lovin' your report, Holly. I really do.

Yep... not being big rule-breakers :lookaroun, we asked first at the front desk and they said the Kidani Village pool is available to all AKL guests. I'll post pictures and a little information on it when we get to day 8! They seem to want guests to utilize both resorts... all of the info you get at check-in includes Kidani information and activities info for the DVC resort.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out and you'll make it this January! The Kilimanjaro Club sounds great... I'm already looking forward to your report on the extra safari experiences club guests have access to!

Day 7, Friday, July 17: Magic Kingdom/Epcot

Friday morning we woke up early (of course) and made our way down to the Mara for breakfast; a new experience for us, because we usually do sit-down breakfasts. But in an effort to save a bit of money , we eliminated table service breakfasts on our leg of the trip with the exception being on Brett’s birthday, which we’ll get to later.

I had a ham, egg, and cheese croissant, which was quite good and Brett got the Mickey waffle. We took our food out to the picnic area where nary a soul was seen. Must be too early for most folks!

Here are some calm and inviting pictures of the watering hole before it fills up with people:

When evaluating our plan of attack for the last four days of our stay, Brett and I decided: 4 days = 4 different park openings. This one was to be our Magic Kingdom morning! This time we raced off to Frontierland with the masses and picked up BTMRR fastpasses before hopping in line for Splash Mountain. As I’m typing this I just realized it was my first Splash Mountain ride of the entire trip. Totally uncharacteristic, considering it’s the BEST RIDE EVER!

P7170097copy.jpg

P7170096.jpg

The Hidden Mickey at the end of the ride is my favorite. Probably because it’s one of the few I found completely on my own, having never heard of it before. It was a “no flash” photo and I apologize for the lack of quality:

P7170099.jpg

Next up, we spent a little time in Fantasyland, and caught my favorite 3D attraction: Philharmagic!

P7170141.jpg

We also rode It’s A Small World… a classic in my opinion!

From there we headed back to Toontown in the hopes that some characters would be at the teardrop, but alas, there weren’t any. We got a snack and waited around for awhile but no one came out so we hopped on the train and made our way back to Frontierland. I can’t tell you the last time we took the train. It was fun and relaxing!

From our vantage point getting off the train, we could see that BTMRR was down. Booooo. I had an idea though; the old frontier was a great place to get my checkers revenge! So off we went to the checker set outside the Frontierland Shootin Arcade. Because it was so hot we decided “quick checkers” was a must and wouldn’t allow each other to think too long over a move. I should make this a permanent rule because I wiped the board with him! And didn’t even have to trick him to do it!

P7170151.jpg

The park was really busy and everything had such long lines we weren’t willing to wait in. No doubt, the lack of Space Mountain and fact that BTMRR was still down had a hand in it. So we wandered around and made our way back to Fantasyland by way of the castle. An area we don’t tend to walk through often.

P7170166.jpg

Without much else to do we ended up back at the teardrop again… no characters. Déjà vu: back on the train to check one more time on BTMRR. Waaahhhh. Still down. I was such a whiner about this because I really really wanted to ride it. The phrase “you always want what you can’t have” certainly comes to mind now. Pictures of the defunct Big Thunder from the railroad:

P7170164.jpg

P7170106.jpg

Without much time before lunch, we decided to go hassle Cinderella’s family. Now, usually when we meet them I find that Drizella is more fun and animated, but this day the award goes to Anastasia. And Lady Tremaine didn’t miss a beat either. First off, Anastasia wanted to take Brett off my hands. Of course, Lady Tremaine was sizing him up… she was having trouble believing a scruffy guy in a tshirt could possibly be made of prince material:

P7170167.jpg

Look, she’s absolutely appalled that her daughter would choose so poorly:

P7170168.jpg

Then when I decided to look positively snotty in my picture with them, Lady Tremaine acted absolutely repulsed by my behavior. She let me know just how unladylike I was and being that I wasn’t a lady she would not let me spend time with her two perfect angels for children!! I love Anastasia’s response to my being berated.

On our way to lunch we passed by the Move It Shake It Celebrate It party. Too bad, we didn’t have time to stop and join in the festivities:

P7170174.jpg

We had reservations at the Plaza. It’s one of my favorite lunch spots on property because the food is consistently good, the prices aren’t too bad, and there’s usually some kind of entertainment if you time it right: the Main Street citizens tend to frequent the place often. We had judged correctly this time because soon after we ordered (grilled chicken sandwich for Brett and the club for me) Miss Inga came strolling through the doors to adorn the 100th family of the day with a little magic. After this was out of the way the Birthday proceedings began! She made her way around the restaurant chatting with all the celebrants, doling out Mickey stickers and decorating tables with confetti. She was smitten with Brett:

P7170177.jpg

And continued to pet him:

P7170176.jpg

After scouring the room for all the July birthdays she made them get up and join her in a little Happy Birthday Hula! Back at our table Brett received the first of many free Birthday desserts! Let me just tell you, this cupcake was sooooo gooood. It had a delicious buttercream frosting and the cake part was super fresh.

P7170181.jpg

Hopefully up by tomorrow: our afternoon at the resort, dinner and Epcot!

OMG! You wore white shorts into a park and rode a wet ride?! I'm too chicken to even try wearing white shorts because I just know I'll end up with grubby-dirty-hiney-syndrome like I've been draggin' my backside thru the dirt. And on a wet ride! You are brave, chicca! LOL!

I've never had the Plaza before but have been thinkin' we should try it. I wonder if there will be other options for in-park breakfast in January if what I read about Crystal Palace being closed for refurb January/February are true. Brett's b-day cupcake does look yummy. I see he also received the "birthday check". Gotta love it!:lol:

I loooove Lady T & the girls! I met them for the 1st time in May at 1900 Park Fare and they were a hoot.
