Movies...movies...movies

Yeah, I liked it but it seemed at the time it was 'cool' to say it was trash. On the flip side, The Dark Knight, a movie I loved being a lifelong batman fan, when that movie came out it was almost the in thing to say it was the best movie ever.

Same goes for M. Night Shymalan movies which I don't get at all. I thought The Happening was great, but no one else liked it simply because its cool to trash M. Night Shymalan movies. And I have yet to read a good concerete reasons why someone didn't like it. The same goes for Lady in the Water, the Village, Signs, etc. Its such a shame, because I truly think they are great movies, but they're not being treated that way.:(

I don't really like Shymalan, but at the same time I don't not like him if that makes sense?

I was really looking forward to The Happening, and while I thought it was ok, there was something about it that disappointed me for some reason.

The problem with Shymalan's movies aren't that they are necessarily bad. They are just marketed to the wrong people.

The Village, for instance...those ads promoted this movie to be a horror flick...it wasn't. It was a let-down for the people going to see a scary movie. Same thing goes with The Happening. It wasn't a "bad" film...just not what I was expecting and I was letdown because I thought it would be his best. He peaked too early with The Sixth Sense. Unbreakable wasn't bad...but no 6S. Signs, aside from the lame-o looking alien...is my favorite of the bunch. Lady was "eh."

You know going in to the movies that there will be some twist or some unique way that this crazy world and its characters are connected. He's great at that. The problem is...maybe people expecting it takes away from the "WOW, I NEVER SAW THAT COMING" effect.

The Sixth Sense got me...and it had me right up until the end. Signs was cool the way that it twisted all the little things (Her leaving water all over the house, him with his asthma, etc.). IMHO, 2 1/2 out of 6 were good. (Those are the only ones I have seen.)

Well, the Village was kind of a stolen concept. That, and it was a bad movie. It had awkwardly trying-too-hard-to-be-artistic camera angles (random chair in a field?). The acting was horrible. Frankly, I thought it was boring.

Signs scared the 8th grade CRAP out of me.

I thought Lady in the Water was a great story. I enjoyed it a lot, probably because I wasn't expecting anything scary. However, it was a little predictable.

I haven't seen the happening, but I hear I would like it

I loved Lady In The Water!

Reasons:
Unlike pretty much all western stories, it showed weird things happening without need to explain why or how.

Great acting.

And it's his best because it's his only film that tells a story and not just a bunch of filler leading up to a gimmick.
:D

Eh...I'm an M. Night fan from way back, but I just couldn't get excited about The Happening.
I read the script last winter and was just floored by how bad it was. I was shocked the Night could write something so.....blah.
Anyhow, I didn't go see the film. Guess I'll check it out at home.

You sound like you might be a little bit like me. I love reading screenplays, and often part of my judgement for a movie is based on how well the final screenplay is written.

I must have close to a hundred screenplays stored away that I have read. My wife and I have written several ourselves, just as a hobby. We never had any intention to do anything with them, just something for ourselves. I think that is why I am not very fond of poor screenwriting.

For sure.
I spent over a year writing my screenplay, taking pains to get it just right.
(Still bouncing around L.A.....any producers out there need a good script?:D)
Then I read one like "The Happening" or Tarantino's "Inglorious B@$tards" and am shocked at how, frankly, poorly it's written.
Hopefully Quentin can overcome the limitations of his own script.

I can't stand that Hitchcock knock off. Mediocre, at best.

This is true, it was very poorly marketed. It was marketed as a monster horror flick when it was really more of a psychological thriller. Still, that doesn't necessarily make it a bad movie. And I don't know about you Pongo, I thought the acting was terriffic, especially Bryce Dallas Howard. The scene where she was sobbing and running blindly though the twigs in the forrest was great. But I agree about Signs though, it still stands as one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. I will say that The Happening didn't really scare me, but I found some of the scenes to be haunting and I loved all the creative horriffic deaths.

I havn't seen Unbreakable, and I will say Lady in the Water is my least favourite M. Night movie, but I don't think its bad.

I'm going to the Quantum of Solace midnite showing tonight. I've been waiting for this movie ever since Casino Royale ended!

I got the chance to see it a few days ago, just by chance, and liked it better than Casino Royale... but since I really didn't like Casino Royale, it would have been hard for me not to like Quantum of Solace more.
