Even been on Horizons at Epcot?

I was always scared of the space ending. I liked the desert one, my brothers always outvoted me. Sigh, I was young and couldn't truly appreciate it, now it's gone...

Then I realized how grand and inspiring an attraction could be in SSE... then they ruined it...:(

Was it ever released that that was the problem....I only remember Eisner or someone talking about the pavilion as an "old building" and then they pyroed it to death
Officially, Disney forgot it was closed, then decided it was too small for the new Compaq Space Pavilion - despite the fact M:S is a lot smaller than Horizons was - so they had to build a new one.

I`ll say this again: There was no sinkhole or structural failure with the building. I have it off the record from, well, the inside. Don`t ask ;)

Eisner objected to the rehab cost of Horizons when he asked for it. Compaq would foot the bill for a new space pavilion, and the removal of an attraction Disney said it couldn`t afford to renew. Perfetc business sense in Eisners corporate eyes.

PS Expo, nice avatar :D

I loved Horizons and remember riding it over and over again.

The DNA part really scared me cuz i used to get motion sickness from big screens and such.

What a great ride though...I'm a sucker for dark rides that have great messages.

While they're at it, bring back World of Motion and Dreamfinder

Do not even suggest that the latest redesign of Spaceship Earth even approaches the artistry of Horizons.
That's awesome.

Listen to this man, he knows what he's talking about.

Only in concept my friend, only in concept...;)
I'm sorry you went deaf

I remember EPCOT from before cheap effects rides like Horizons brought down that once lovely park!

Nah, just kidding. I did know an EPCOT Centre before Horizons. When Horizons opened, it was the attraction to top it all off, the one that brought the park together. I always felt that Horizons should've been the attraction in Spaceship Earth for that reason. The centre piece.

For the non-oldtimers:

Rides come and go. Most are remembered fondly, and missed, if only for the nostalgia. Toad, 20K, the Kitchen Cabaret - it's a pity if you missed out on them. But it's not the end of the world. There is a lot of false nostalgia too, a 'back in the days when WDW was still fun...' from grumpy old men.

But Horizons really was as good as everybody says it was. The perfect Disney attraction.

Without getting too preachy I'll just say it this way, if I haven't said it enough already

We've lost a vision for the future. Plain and simple. You show me where we capture that these days. That was what Horizons did and did it so incredibly. I wish I was old enough to have gone on Futurama II at the 1964 Worlds Fair, at that time imagine what the ride must have felt like. It gave a look into what the future might be like. Even more interesting is the 1939 Worlds Fair vision of the future, you know what year? 1960. It had a pure vision of what technology and brain-power could do for us. Imagine how disappointed a time traveler from then to now would probably be. Why did we lose that vision? Part of it is they didn't anticipate telecommunictions, the internet, iphones, etc.. Those sort of took the place of the focus on transportation. But there are certainly other reasons why we don't have a vision for the future.

I wish that Disney would put in attractions that would recapture that. I truly love Soarin but rides like Horizons captured something that had a much longer impact on me.

I agree here...EPCOT has lost it's inspiring vision for the future. It's a shame since we need it again now the most we ever have.

But how can they keep up with the future? How can they take years imagineering an attraction or ride and have it be obsolete within a few years of building it?

That's what gets me thinking it will never be like it was in the late 70's and early 80's.

I also miss Horizon's, what a great ride. I have only tried M:S twice, it just isn't for me. It is a shame that they couldn't have had both. I just considor myself lucky to have experienced such a great ride.

I love Horizons and miss it everytime we go to WDW. I know it will not do anything but I lodge complaints everytime we go to WDW.

Horizons was EPCOT, it tied all of the other attractions in future world together. SSE, WoM, Seas, Land, Energy, were all represented in some form during the ride.

The orange grove smell, then the storm approaching with the wind. I remember that scene perfectly. There is truly nothing on the ride that I did not like, the music was great, the narration was great, the story was great, and the ideal of If we can dream it - we can do it summed up Disney perfectly.

Yes, I miss my favorite ride, at least I was able to ride it numerous times and it has given me some great memories of being at WDW as a child. Without Horizons I am not sure if I would be as big a fan of Disney as I am today - therefore I must call it my favorite ride of all time.

I regret never being able to go on it. Even now, it is one of my favorite attractions after listening and watching it. I would have loved it. Hopefully it comes back in some incarnation.
