Okay, I'm surprised at the number of folks who share these feelings about Horizons, truly. I mentioned in my first post that I had a few ideas on how I felt folks "like us" could help recapture that kind of visionary ride at Disney. It is a topic I'm very interested in discussing and if anyone else is interested in this shoot me a message here and I'll tell you a little more what things I've been working on to help "Recapture the future".

But how can they keep up with the future? How can they take years imagineering an attraction or ride and have it be obsolete within a few years of building it?

That's what gets me thinking it will never be like it was in the late 70's and early 80's.

That's true...But they can at LEAST be futuristic again...and optimistic.*I'm looking at you Seas!*SSE *kinda* does this but then again it's not done so it might get better....
I love Horizons and miss it everytime we go to WDW. I know it will not do anything but I lodge complaints everytime we go to WDW.

Horizons was EPCOT, it tied all of the other attractions in future world together. SSE, WoM, Seas, Land, Energy, were all represented in some form during the ride.

The orange grove smell, then the storm approaching with the wind. I remember that scene perfectly. There is truly nothing on the ride that I did not like, the music was great, the narration was great, the story was great, and the ideal of If we can dream it - we can do it summed up Disney perfectly.

Yes, I miss my favorite ride, at least I was able to ride it numerous times and it has given me some great memories of being at WDW as a child. Without Horizons I am not sure if I would be as big a fan of Disney as I am today - therefore I must call it my favorite ride of all time.
Besides SSE 94,me too...It is missed.

While I agree (being the Sci-Fi geek that I am) I just don't see truly EPIC attractions in EPCOT's future. But, as I have posted many times in the past, I feel that is because I am so nostalgic and was impressed as a kid in a way that I am no longer impressed. I guess we are just a bit technically jaded. Just look at these i-pod things. I don't own one but you can have a hundred + songs on a little bitty machine!

What can they possibly put in EPCOT that we can't conceive of? Everything seems tangible, other than colonizing Mars....

That's EXACTLY it.EPCOT has to be the "OMG-Impossible" again...It's close right now...SSE can do it in a new decent...JII can be amazing in a refurb...Even the Seas and Energy can get in on it-Big issues today can EASILY be turned into attractions that inspire the future and the solutions to these problems.

If we can dream it....

I think what made Horizons so memorable was that it was more than a ride, it was a source of inspiration.

Soarin is a fantastic ride, but it doesn't "inspire" like Horizons did.

I never walked off of Horizons thinking "Wow, what a great ride", rather I walked off inspired, and excited about a wonderous future for mankind.

Horizons depicted a bright future; Clean, efficient and safe city-scapes; exciting new modes of transportation that were fast, efficient and congestion free; homes full of technological advances that provided ever-increasing convieniences to the American family. New exciting industries, lifestyle and career choices.

It seems that current depictions of the future (at least in movies) are dark, dirty, crime infested, and dangerous. It's as if we've given up hope for a bright future.

We have...No reason why Disney can't be the first to bring it back.;)

I agree with you.

Horizons actually means alot to me. When I was a kid, Horizons was the ride that my mother and I had to make. It was our ride. We used to go to Disney World frequently and the entire build up for the trips were always based around riding Horizons. My mom is really sick now so we do reminisce alot about when I was a kid and Horizons is usually brought up. The ride has such fond memories for me. I've collected some really rare Horizons memorabillia over the years which is adorning my office. I can post some pictures if anyone would like to see. I also work overseas in Nigeria and I tell you, its kind of cool to be out on an oil production jacket by myself in the Atlantic Ocean and after I finish my work and I'm waiting for the helicopter to pick me up, I just lay back, put on the Ipod and listen to the Horizons score while the ocean breeze is blowing. It sounds crazy I know but its so peaceful and relaxing, and it gives me a chance to reminisce about the good old days.

Previous to my October 2007 trip, my last time I was at WDW was in August 1993. That was the last time I was there I rode Horizons, World of Motion, Journey into Imagination with Dreamfinder and Figment, caught Captain EO, and purchased two Mighty Ducks of Anaheim t-shirts (a month before their innagural season in the NHL).

I have fond memories of Horizons and although I tried all three excursions at the end of the ride, my best was underwater.
