Maybe we aren't thinking big enough here. Burbank just spent 4 Billion to buy Marvel Comics. They aren't just going to let that new acquisition sit there gathering dust. But why would they need to shoehorn those characters into existing parks?

Maybe they bought this franchise to allow a theme for the fifth WDW park and/or the third Disneyland Resort park? It would be the classic thrill ride park to go after teens and twenty-somethings and men up to age 45 or so.

Ok, this thread is ridiculous. This is my response to posts through page 22. I'll catch up on the other stuff afterwards.

does this mean next time i visit, I'll be able to meet wolverine at the character spot? Am I the only one that is scared by this??

Universal lost the rights to the Marvel characters (as walkaround characters) as of 1/1/2008. I would imagine these would be the first things that Disney adds, and it will presumably be to the Streets of America in Hollywood Studios.

Maybe this means disney is thinking of putting in some more roller coasters.

Six flags uses the DC characters for rollercoasters and universal has some marvel themed thrill rides.

I honestly think this is more for the movie rights then to put the characters in their theme parks.

I agree that it's more for the movie rights to start - that and the ability to have a huge foothold in the teenage/young adult male crowd is a big thing for Disney.

As for the DC presence in Six Flags, it really is only the characters. Sure the rides are named after DC characters but it’s no different then them being influenced by Crayola crayons – The Batman Coaster is Black, The Riddler Coaster is Green, The Superman Coaster is Red (or in Bizzaro world: Purple). We all know that’s not theming. Sure they have a long standing agreement with DC, but I don’t think it would be too difficult to come up with another “theme” for a Green, Black, Red or Purple coaster.

Ok, so let's say that Universal has the rights to Hulk, Spider-Man, Dr. Doom, Storm, etc...

They have a land called "Marvel Superhero Island."

How could they possibly expand on this land? I don't think that Universal will have the rights to FUTURE attractions that include Marvel Licensed characters/themes.

What I'm trying to say is that you probably won't get an "Ironman coaster" or anything ADDED to the land.

Seeing as this land has the most to offer of any land in this park, I'm not sure the need to expand is that dire.

If Universal thought Harry Potter would take down Disney...Then they lose their biggest IOA draw to Disney!

This round goes to Disney! :sohappy:

Yeah, only cost them $4 billion dollars. I hardly consider Disney would make a $4 billion investment for the sake of "combating" a new land in a rival theme park, no matter how anticipated that land is - especially when the ramifications of that land on Disney's attendance have not been determined.

Except... they aren't. At all. Hulk and Spider-Man will remain and continue to be huge advertising draws.

Oh, so those "perpetual contracts" mean nothing to you? Disney can't do a thing, and Universal isn't about to lose their coaster cash cow and their most critically acclaimed attraction. Nice try jt, but as soon as you get Universal involved in your over-enthusiasm, it really goes over the line.

Those perpetual contracts mean something, but will they really leave 2 rides when the contract for everything else expires and they need to change everything around them including the name of the land?

What exactly does this mean? When someone says perpetual contract, I read that as an agreement in which Marvel and Universal entered into a licensing agreement until one or both of them want to end this agreement. Now that Marvel is Disney - that changes a lot. I haven't seen the terms of this agreement, but my expectation is that it has a defined end date.

Completely forgot about Fox (Simpsons), Warner Bros (Potter) and Viacom (Nickelodeon). Isn't that pretty much every rival studio OTHER than Disney? :dazzle:

@Chezman - think about it logically. There really is no reason they'd make a perpetual contract for just TWO attractions. I'm willing to bet that they the whole area firmly under a similar contract. I wouldn't be surprised if nothing at all became of this.

My understanding is that Potter being licensed to Warner Brothers and subsequently being licensed for use inside of Islands of Adventure are completely independent. We aren't going to see visual representations of Daniel Radcliffe in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, we will be seeing visual representations of Harry Potter.

Actually, Daniel Radcliffe will be seen in Wizarding World. He, Emma and Rupert have all shot footage for attractions in the new area.

Huh? I was at Islands of Adventure yesterday and saw Spiderman, Cyclops, Wolverine and Storm... and let me say, I certainly hope that Disney can find better character actors for Wolverine and Storm than Universal has.

I also hope that Disney does some things to make SuperHeroes more kid friendly.

Have you tried to buy a comic for an 8-10 year old, lately?

Do you remember muppet babies? What d'you want superhero babies? Baby Hulk wondering around a nursery with Baby Spidey and Pre-Med Doom (he couldn't be a Doctor yet).

I was at Universal in May of 2008 and got my picture taken with Wolverine...

30 pages ... sorry, can't read em all. So what are all the fanbois so foamed up for?
(is it because old '74 found out from a more reliable source than my first that while the Tink ride is possible for both MK and DL, that it is 'highly unlikely' for FLA at this time? Nah, but I thought if I didn't do a mea culpa here no one would ever see it with all the lather and blather).

And what does Disney buying Marvel have to do with WDW News and Rumors? Seems like this should be in the Business/Company News section.

I can only imagine from skimming through 10 or so pages what people are thinking.

Anyone suggest Spidey would be moving from IOA to MK yet? How about Hulk invading T-Land and tossing out Stitch? C'mon there must be someone here saying Disney's World of Marvel Superheros being the fifth gate? What about Cindy and Fantastic Four meet and greets side by side? How about the new Chef Silver Surfer at the Contemporary? Or the Human Torch bar at the Poly?

Seriously, this is surprising (not the above, that you can count on in this magical realm) even though there have been rumors about Marvel with many suitors.

On a stockholder level, I think they could be spending too much, although it's probably worth the risk.

On a fanboi level, I've always preferred DC characters myself. The recent Batman films show what can be done, if done right with them.

And I'm still waiting to hear more details before I formulate an opinion.

The deals Marvel has with other studios apparently stay in effect, so Mickey doesn't start making Spidey films etc ... and obviously, from a parks perspective, UNI keeps the rights to the rides it has, so Spidey isn't gonna be rethemed to TeleTubbies (sorry, JT, I am sure they're a fave of yours!) and Hulk is going to become Al Gore's Going Green coaster.

There's a lot of incest in Hollywood anyway ... Disney makes a helluva lot of $$$ off of Star Wars (and more in the futures) but obviously not what George Lucas and 20th Century Fox do. And when say an Indy shirt gets sold at DL or WDW, money goes to Paramount ... and Lucas too.

And clearly by the nature of all the prior deals, things will likely remain so. My local Disney outlet sells Transformers and Hulk toys now that I am sure came from the giant toy store at DD.

For some reason, I see the biggest immediate impact in this to be in animation. I get the feeling John Lasseter and Ed Catmull see opportunities there.

I just wonder why this works long term.

Does Disney really expect to take over with Spidey 9 or X-Men 12 or Hulk ... well, they'll call that a reboot. When the next film is making hundreds of millions for Paramount or Uni or Sony is it great that Disney owns the characters now?

Does it help Disney to own a very valuable stable of characters that it doesn't know what to do with? ... Of course, it could be argued that they don't know what to do with most of the ones they have.

And what does it say about Disney's ability to create and innovate that they've come to the point where they just throw in the towel and buy companies that can do it better and more consistently than they can?

Walt wouldn't be buying Pixar or Marvel (and certainly not FOX Family or Go.com). He'd be innovating.

More as I hear more, time permitting!

Great move by Disney.... Now, instead of bickering on things NO ONE on here knows about, let's wait and see what comes out of this...

Disney should have bought DC Comics because they have more variety. They could use DC's iconic western charecters (Jonah Hex, Bat-Lash, Cinnemon) in a new Frontierland e-ticket, they could use the Green Lantern mythos in Tomorrowland, etc.

I agree with '74. The biggest benefactor is the animation division.

Most likely, the people saying Marvel island will be replaced with Transformers island (or Cybertron) are probably right. If there already going to bulldoze half the land anyway they might as well make structural changes to the Spiderman building and clone the new Transformers e-ticket (since it uses the same ride system anyway) and they can easily retheme freefall to a transformers charecter and repaint the Hulk coaster black and call it "Escape from Cybertron" and add some new special effects. It would also give Universal the opprotunity to create there own robotic/animatronic charecters to walk around greeting guests.

Oh and its hillarious that while WDWMagic views this as a positive. The comic fansites are viewing this as absoluetly the WORST THING that could ever happen. Read the comments at www.newsarama.com for details.

Oh and to add to the hysteria:

Who's Finding Nemo??? Namor, the Sub-Mariner!!!!!

The Black Knight sets out to slay Pete's Dragon!!

The Incredibles meet the Fantastic Four!!

Howard the Duck wrestles Donald Duck to the ground and forces pants on the duck!

Dazzler releases a new single with Hannah Montana!!

Hank Pym's new girlfriend??? Tinkerbell!!!

With 4 billion, Disney could max out all 4 parks, build TDS as a 5th park and still have money left over. WHY DO THEY WANT SPIDERMAN? I don't get it...
