Did I Really Just See That.....in Disney World?????

Pumbas Nakasak

Heading for the great escape.
Wow, I think this thread shows that something is seriously wrong with some parents today. =\ No matter what age I was my parents would NEVER in a million years let me have a rolling on the floor crying tantrum in public, going to the bathroom anywhere that isnt the bathroom, or taking off my clothes in public. An experience with me that has happened more than once (not only at wdw) is that youre in a restaurant sitting there eating, minding your own business, when a child comes up to you and either just looks at you or starts talking/pointing, and the parents just sit there and smile like its the cutest thing ever. Now I love kids, and they can be cute but I still don't want to talk to someone elses kids while I'm eating, and every time this happens I'm dumbfounded that the parents just seem to think its completely adorable and not do anything about it. What happened to telling youre kids to not talk to strangers, these days it seems like parents are encouraging it. -rant-

Yes theres just not enough fear or cotton wool in the world.

OK this wasn't at WDW but this JUST happened to me, literally 5 mins ago! I was at the grocery store with my mom and as we were leaving the parking lot, she saw a woman get out of her van WITH HER KIDS INSIDE IT to go across the parking lot to talk on her cell and smoke! At one point, the kids tried to get out of the car and she screamed at them! Of course this was the one time neither my mom nor myself took our cell phones so I parked and ran into the bagel shop the woman was sitting right outside of. They were busy but I ran up to the cashier and asked to use their phone since a woman left her kids in the car. She asked me who and I pointed her out. The cashier's reply "but she's watching them from where she is." I told her I don't care if she's watching them, SHE LEFT HER KIDS ALONE IN THE CAR WITH THE WINDOWS UP while she sat outside smoking ACROSS THE STREET!! She reluctantly told the manager "This person wants to use the phone" but didn't say why, it's like she didn't want me to call (did she know the woman perhaps?). So one of the other workers there told her to let me use the phone and all the other people there were watching like why isn't she letting me call 911? So they gave me the phone, I called and went back to me car. As I was getting in the car, the same IDIOTIC cashier who didn't want me to call went outside and said something to the woman who ran to her car and left!

Thats's horrible! It's ironic that she needs a license to drive a car but doesn't need one to have children!

I know! I'm still so upset! Upset with the stupid mother who kept her kids in the car and upset with the idiot cashier who tried to prevent me from reporting it and then told the lady!

OT, but Happy Father's Day to all you dads!

How old are these kids you are talking about? Was the car running?

She certainly doesn't sound like mother of the year...but then again calling 911 seems like a bit of an extreme reaction as well.

Here in Phoenix, AZ it is 120°+ in the sun and a couple of minutes in a closed car is enough to damage to anyone, especially children. If I saw children in a closed car I would call 911 in an instant.

Well, the person who posted it was from NJ LOL.

If there is physical danger, of course. But I just don't see the immediate physical danger they were in, especially when the mother could obviously see the vehicle. That's why I asked if the car was running, or how old the kids were - are we talking babies here?

I'm not defending what this woman did, but then again I can't see calling 911 over it before I said something to the woman if she was standing there unless there was some immediate physical danger. Sitting in a parked car for a few minutes in full view of the mother in non-extreme weather just doesn't scream "OMG CALL THE COPS!" to me. It's not even like she went in the store...

Nowhere near as shocking or outrageous as anything you guys have seen but I was shocked by the cheek of this.
A little boy ( from somewhere within the us that is spanish speaking) was pushing through the line for stitch saying my mum my mums up there...he got to just beside us when he stopped -no mum or dad insight! Well just before we got to the bit where you're about to go in the doors to the ride he whistles and all 9 of his family members plunder through the queue and join him! I think its absolutely disgusting that they used their child like this, I mean what sort of parents or people do that...queues are there for a reason-if you dont like them then dont go to wdw!

You know the most amazing part of this? There was a line for Stitch! :lookaroun

In all seriousness, some of the things on here are shocking. Amazing how horrible some people can be, even at Disney.

I would be upset if someone called 911 on me for leaving my kids in the car when I was within site of them. She probably kept the windows up so they wouldn't be exposed to her second hand smoke. I think someone over reacted.
Just my opinion

She was across the street in a busy parking lot with the windows closed and the car off in over 90 degree heat plus humidity. One of the kids looked like he was about 5 or 6 years old. I don't care how upset she was or anyone else would be, the kids could have over heated or gotten out of the car and got hit by a passing car or something while she sat there and chatted on her phone (and she wasn't even looking towards the car) and smoked. When they did try to open the door, I think to tell her how hot it was, she screamed at them to get back inside. G-d Forbid something happened to the kids, by the time she saw it and got across the bust parking lot/ street, it could have been too late.

ETA: I didn't want to talk to the woman directly since she seemed riled up and angry and b!tchy. If she screamed at her kids the way she did to stay in a hot car with the windows closed alone in a parking lot, what would she say (or do) to me?

It's 90 in Jersey today? Wow, I live pretty close and it's pretty cold and rainy here. Weird.

I find it an extreme overreaction to call 911 for a parked car with school-age kids in it with the mother in the area, but at least everything turned out fine...

It was very hot and humid here today (we had the rain yesterday). And I think leaving a 5 year old in a closed car with no adult within 20 feet (she was way further than 20 feet) of the car in a busy parking lot is definitely child endangerment. What if they got out of the car and tried to get to her and got hit by a car? I don't know of any 5 year old who is old enough to cross a busy parking lot by them self. And what if she left the car on with the keys in it? They could have put the car in gear and gotten into an accident. No matter what anyone says, it's endangerment to leave CHILDREN, anyone who's not a teenager at least, in a car by themselves.

She asked the age of the kids and if the mom was 5 or 10 feet away or more than 20 (she was way more than 20 feet away) and said she'd send a car immediately. So obviously she felt it was enough of an emergency. And the way the woman booked out of there when her friend (cashier) told her I called the cops, she realized it wasn't right either.

Wait, so there is just one kid now? Hehe just trying to get the details.

I guess we have a different level of experience with 5-year olds. Once a kid can go to school, I don't think it's endangerment for them to sit in a car for a few minutes in full view of the parent. Unless the child was developmentally disabled, that is.

I guess my mom was a child abuser all those years she made me wait in the car, and I never even knew it. /wink

I had this to happen when we lived in Raleigh, NC. I was at Wal-Mart and when I came out there was a lady watching a car full of small kids, with no adult in site. She said that she had been watching them and had no idea where the mom was. We both decided to call 911, but before then could show up, after 10 minutes or so, the mom came out with food from the McDonalds inside the store. I was so mad that the police never came. I wanted to say something so bad but I didn't. People are crazy!

If I can shed some light here...

We encourage anyone/everyone to dial 911 when they feel the need. More calls=higher call volume=adding personnel=job security!

But, on the other hand, we absolutely hate the idiotic calls (dog barking in the middle of the day-it's a dog! that's what dogs do!):fork:

This situation...lucky there weren't 2 911 calls. Or just 1 911 call for an "irate customer" in the store wanting to use the phone. We've had those before.

Anyway, when you call 911, the person on the other end of the line is a "call taker," not a dispatcher. The call taker takes the information, enters it into CAD (computer aided dispatch), and ships it off to the appropriate desk(s) for dispatch. Then, the fire dispatcher or ems dispatcher or pd dispatcher will look at the call and send the appropriate resource. For a call taker to say something like "we'll send a car out immediately" isn't appropriate, because that call taker does not always know what is going on with the police and if they have a car that is a)available and/or b)close by to respond "immediately." More than likely, the call taker said something like, "OK, we'll get the police out there," or, "The police have the call/info."

So, yeah, dial away! I need more OT!

a 2 year old hanging off a breast ANYWHERE is a bit much! there was a lady i used to work with that breast fed her child until he was 5! when your child can stand up to breast feed, it's WAY past time to stop! IMO, it should stop after the first birthday....but, that's just MY opinion!

lol, thats the correct opinion in my mind. after a year or so is a bit much. and if he's asking for the breast, its way past time to stop.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Well when I was there 2 or 3 years ago while I came back from MK's Disney Dreams Come True Parade. So I was walking by Liberty Square and I saw, well lets just say a "man and a man" together and they had 2 girls that were crying. They were 3 or 4ish. And I hear calling one of the men mommy. And my head turned around in surprised and I was like what the heck.
And what really gets me annoyed is everyday, every year that I'm in WDW I always see a kid under 10 pushing a stroller and the he/she hits me in the ankles and I get really bad red marks on my legs. And seeing kids wandering alone and not following the rules and the parents are easy going and dont even care about their own kids.
One time we were waiting for the bus to come back to the GF so we can go to MK and the bus rarely comes but it is slow. And we just missed one bus when we just got out of DHS. So we were waiting and waiting until this one bus comes. With my bus were 3 handicapped people. And it takes them like 5 minutes each to get on the darn bus.
Epic fail. Sorry, but... are you serious? I can't actually tell if you're joking or not!
