Did I Really Just See That.....in Disney World?????

I also remember the other Disney boards we were on at the time and how everyone was blaming Disney for it... that is they were until other cruise ships starting getting it. IMO Disney did everything they could to contain it and keep it from spreading.

I saw a brawl happen at the Poly in July of '93. At the time they were working on the entire upstairs area of the GCH, so you had to walk by the Coral Isle Cafe (now called Kona) and walk through a windy, make-shift construction hall to get to the Monorail. As we made our way up the stairs we noticed two guys (extremely intoxicated) who are yelling and arguing with each other walking out of the bar area of what is now Ohana (was the Papeete Bay Verandah at the time). Anyways, they make it to the temporary construction hallway and one of the guys just throws a punch to the other's face! They both started wrestling and throwing blows. A couple of CMs and security quickly rushed the two and broke it up (they must have sensed something was going to happen and followed them from the bar). There was blood all over the walls and floor and they had knocked over a picture that was hanging on the temp walls. My brother and I were laughing about it the rest of the day.

It was very hot and humid here today (we had the rain yesterday). And I think leaving a 5 year old in a closed car with no adult within 20 feet (she was way further than 20 feet) of the car in a busy parking lot is definitely child endangerment. What if they got out of the car and tried to get to her and got hit by a car? I don't know of any 5 year old who is old enough to cross a busy parking lot by them self. And what if she left the car on with the keys in it? They could have put the car in gear and gotten into an accident. No matter what anyone says, it's endangerment to leave CHILDREN, anyone who's not a teenager at least, in a car by themselves.

I totally agree with you - leaving young children ALONE? and in the HEAT? I think you did the right thing

A couple of my own thoughts on this subject:
1) You don't leave kids sitting in a car by themselves for more than one reason. The obvious reason would be heat-related problems, but what about the possibility of abduction? Do you know how fast a car can be stolen by an 'accomplished' criminal? It's faster than that lady could get across a street. The furthest I will ever go while leaving my kids unattended in a car is to take a shopping basket to a nearby "basket return area" (whatever you'd call those)--and I've even been known to take my kids with me to the basket return if it's further away than I'm comfortable with.

2) I think some of the people here have this idea that calling 911 is like telling a manager when you have a disagreement with a coworker. In my job, if I have a problem with someone, I will talk to them about it and try as hard as I can to get things resolved without bringing a manager into the situation. That's the kind of treatment I would like, and I try to extend it to others--BUT I am reasonably sure that they aren't going to pull out a gun and shoot me. Was there any such assurance in this case? When you're dealing with random angry people out there, the best course of action is often to let people trained to deal with angry people take care of it.

3) I'll bet a lot of the same people on here who argue against calling 911 would be ready to shoot the lady for animal cruelty if it were a couple of dogs left in the car. You just don't leave kids or animals in a sealed car in the heat.

Back on topic.....

Here is another thing I couldn't believe I saw:

On my honeymoon aboard the Disney Magic back in 2002, I was startled to see my specific cruise featured as the lead story on CNN. Turns out our cruise was the infamous cruise that started the whole Norwalk virus scare. We got a letter under our door that morning telling us to make sure we wash our hands, but I did not expect to see it being reported on CNN. With us being only a year post 9/11, the first thought was terrorism.

Luckily my wife and I were fine. When we got home, our parents gave us a tongue lashing about not calling them from the boat to say we were OK. I wasn't aware we had to call them to inform them that we were not puking our guts out. :ROFLOL:

News stations overreact to the Noro-Virus (Norwalk Virus)... All it is is a glorified fast acting "flu" that goes through your system in 48hrs. The only reason it spreads so fast is because there are 2000+ people on a cruise ship in close proximity...so spreading germs can happen VERY fast. Working for Holland America Line, I have seen many "sick ships" and many passengers AND News Stations overreact... then again, how often does the news not overdo something?

I agree with you 100%. I was shocked to see us on CNN. I definitely think they overreacted. However, at the time it happened, one theory was terrorism because of the close proximity to 9/11. At least that was the angle some news programs took.

On a side note, everyone who got the virus on that cruise got a voucher for 1/2 off a future disney cruise. I joked with my wife that I would gladly puke for 24 hours if I were to get this voucher.

I proceeded to get VERY sick - arguably food poisoning from the burger. :hurl:

After a little while I thought I was ok - I just really wish it hadn't happened in front of hundreds of people!!!!

Needless to say - I haven't eaten at Cosmic Rays since!

I am sorry you had to go through this. Being sick anywhere is awful. but most especially away from home. I am very happy to hear you felt better soon afterwards.

Not sure it was food poisoning as it usually takes anywhere from two to 72 hours for it to get you. Additionally, it lasts for a very long time and comes out of both ends. I have had it four times in my life and have been hospitalized for it once. Believe me you will KNOW when it is food poisoning. It SUCKS!!! The biggest culprit in food poisoning is usually lettuce and other veggies not being washed good enough before preparation. Lemons are big ones as well . . . scrub those suckers with a brush big time before using any of them.

You may have suffered from heat exhaustion. I have fallen prey to that as well and that seems more like it from your description.

I sure don't blame you for not eating there again though that's for sure.

We do a similar thing...I definitely wouldn't complain... esp because it's not a cruiseline's fault if you catch the "virus" onboard... heck...i love any half off coupons!!!

 I did  but only once to let them know that we made it... to the location. What can I say... I love my parents!

I called my parents too .. But that was because I was physically sick after going through all the stress of the wedding week.. I was just calling to let them know I was feeling much better and relaxed.. That was on our second day and we were there for 11 and I didn't call them again.. What wonders an 11 day trip to WDW does for the body and soul.. hehe :sohappy:

Well yeah, we called them when we got to the parks to say we arrived and we called before we boarded the ship (it was a 2 week Disneymoon). But we wouldn't have called from the ship unless it was an emergency!

OK this wasn't at WDW but this JUST happened to me, literally 5 mins ago! I was at the grocery store with my mom and as we were leaving the parking lot, she saw a woman get out of her van WITH HER KIDS INSIDE IT to go across the parking lot to talk on her cell and smoke! At one point, the kids tried to get out of the car and she screamed at them! Of course this was the one time neither my mom nor myself took our cell phones so I parked and ran into the bagel shop the woman was sitting right outside of. They were busy but I ran up to the cashier and asked to use their phone since a woman left her kids in the car. She asked me who and I pointed her out. The cashier's reply "but she's watching them from where she is." I told her I don't care if she's watching them, SHE LEFT HER KIDS ALONE IN THE CAR WITH THE WINDOWS UP while she sat outside smoking ACROSS THE STREET!! She reluctantly told the manager "This person wants to use the phone" but didn't say why, it's like she didn't want me to call (did she know the woman perhaps?). So one of the other workers there told her to let me use the phone and all the other people there were watching like why isn't she letting me call 911? So they gave me the phone, I called and went back to me car. As I was getting in the car, the same IDIOTIC cashier who didn't want me to call went outside and said something to the woman who ran to her car and left!

My husband is an airport traffice officer (okay, everyone groan now), but one of the biggest things he sees, is the number of people that leave their kids in the car unattended. Luckily in our fair city, it's an arrestable offense. He has appeared in court several times for this very thing. The most ironic occasion was a Department of Family Services employee who left his daughter in the car!?! My husband couldn't believe that one at all and I guess really gave the guy an earful.

We have unfortunately had a few occasions of people that have done this, where children have died. What people usually don't think about, is yes they can see the kids, but could they get to the car in times of danger? And they could simply think a kid laid down to sleep, when the child in actuality has passed out, etc. It's fraught with dangers.

That was one of my fears, along with the kids getting out of the car (since they were able to get out of their booster seats and open the door) and running across the street in the parking lot and getting hit by a car.

Yes another thought that had come to my mind. And kids explore when they are bored and accidents can happen in the strangest ways. Better to be safe than sorry.

To address the issue of calling 911, as an officer, my husband will tell you it's always best to call and let them handle the situation. It's hard to ignore the first reaction to respond yourself, but it's the safer route. You never know how someone will react, so better to let a trained person be responsible for that.
