What did you do?

Congratulations! That's a great time on a tricky course. I wish I could have run it, but some family obligations got in the way this go-round.

I hate to hear about the shins. Sometimes when I taper for a race I lose a little bit of my "normal" running form. When I get to the starting line, it takes a while to get into my normal form because I'm all keyed up about racing, running in a crowd, etc. I wonder if that was part of it. At least with the 26.2 you have a little more time/distance to settle in to your race.
Thanks. LOL, Yes, I would have much more time to work that out over 26.2 the next time i do that course.

I hate that you didnt make it. I was looking forward to running into you if we would have arranged something last week, but we will next time. Hey, at least you didnt have to run almost 1/2 - 1 mile on road that had been dug up to re-asphalt. Yes, that is right. Bham had dug up part of 18th street or 2nd ave (cant recall the streets we ran) and you were running on that uneven grooved road that looks like a bunch of lines. It was horrible. A lot of the runners were about it out loud. Cant do anything about it, so might as well make the best of it.

10.87mi in the rain this morning. Strong 8 min pace regardless of the 40mph wind gusts.
Too bad the wind wasnt at your back and you would have had a 7 minute pace. :D 40mph is strong winds.

I'm just getting back to training, after a break due to ITBand issues. So I did:

15 min walk
15 min run
15 min walk

Lots of rolling out muscles with foam rollers

Yeah right...whenever wind holds me back, I think it will be at my back on the return...then, out of spite, I think the wind decides to change direction on my return.:brick:

Chris Cimino (I don't know why I'm writing the forecaster's name, perhaps just bc I listen to him every 5am) said 36-40mph wind gusts. He wasn't joking.

It always seems like that with me too. Head wind heading out on an ovalish type route so I figure the second half will chill my back. No sir.

3 miles last night per the schedule. I was anxious to see how my shins responded. I stretch my calves and shins a lot this weekend. I also started a mild shin strengthening program with a tension band and reverse calf raises. It really seems to be working.

After all my reading, I am of the thinking that if something like this is happening, there are 2 things that could help. 1) Rest 2) Strengthening that muscle.

Im choosing #2. No pain what so ever. Maybe about 20 yards of a bit of tightness after mile 1 going downhill, but that is fine.

Very encouraged. :D

Glad to hear it! Keep an eye on it though.

11.03mi this morning. Slight fatigue. A dull pain in my lower right back, just under the ribs, but I think that's from sleeping weird last night.

11.11mi this morning. Nice weather too. The towns have closed the bathrooms on the boardwalks for the season...so, carrying 2 litres of water on my back is great for hydration, but nowhere to GO now .

Boardwalk -> beach -> ocean :D

As an aside, my knee is still keeping me out of action. This is driving me nuts. I am like a bundle of nerves here.

It is really presenting as a Grade 1 (minor) Medial Collateral Ligament Tear (or if not a tear, I banged the heck out of it)

It does feel a lot better if I tape it, but I am going to hold off running on it till this weekend I think.

Tae Kwon Do on Monday did not help it along - even with a fully supported brace on it.

Surfers: Why is that guy running into the ocean with all his running gear on?
Me: Hey guys, just cooling off, in this 40 degree weather...:lookaroun

Anyway, sorry to hear about the knee issues. Let me tell you, if I were out of action for that long, I think my wife would lock me in the garage.

Dave, I can say from experience.... YOU ARE STUBBORN.

I would have done the same thing, but dang man, give it a rest for 2 or 3 days.

I had to run into the ocean once. I was about 2 miles from the beach condo. It wasnt pretty. :lookaroun

5 Miles tonight. I got up at 5am to do it... and since the gas heat has been on, my sinuses haven't adjusted. I had a massive headache. I went back to bed.

Anyway. Good run. My shin problems seem to be getting much much better since Im strengthening them. Im very excited about that. No pain tonight at all.

I have also worked on a different form running downhill. I think that is when they were "activating" the pain and tightening up really bad.

4.5 miles today at a pace just under 10 minutes - which is HUGE for me.

Was very happy - I'm sure the cool, crisp air helped.

11.15mi this morning. I accidentally coughed while in the middle of swallowing a gel, mid-run. If I had to imagine what swallowing a bunch of lit matches felt like, I think that would be it. :hurl:

6.30mi this morning. I tapered off today, for my scheduled 26-30 miler tomorrow morning. Today's pace was slightly faster than normal 7:30/min, most likely because I have tons of errands to do today.

That's all folks...

Oh, Joel, I'm glad your arch nemsis was MIA last night!
