As an avid curler I have always thought that if more people outside of Canada were exposed to it, it would be hugely popular. It's very addicting, lots of fun even if you are terrible at it, and a lot harder to do than it looks, or at least at an elite level.
One of the highlights of the Turin Games was that a very young Newfoundland team who had picked up one of the old curling legends won the Canadian qualification tournament which none of the experts foresaw, and ended up winning the Gold. The gold medal game was on a friday afternoon. All the schools in the province were closed so that the kids could go home and watch. The skip still lived at home at that time, and his parents place is one street over from us. Everyone on the street had made all kinds of snow sculptures for his arrival home, which I didn't see as it was 5 am or so. New streets in the subdivision were named after the five curlers and the coach. It was probably the biggest sporting story ever in this province.
