Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

After pirates we rode Splash. It’s definitely one of my favorites. I pulled out the camera for a second!

We rode Big Thunder next:

Then took the train around to the front of the park. We had reservations at Whispering Canyon tonight! Yay! An ADR!!

We decided to take the boat back. The waiting area for the boats is pretty large and open. When we walked in there was one family sitting on the benches at the back and the rest of the area was empty. Some of us took up the remaining bench while the rest of us went to the front by the gate to wait.

Apparently the people on the bench were quite unhappy with us. My sister listened to them talk about us most of the time we waited. Even though they weren’t in line and, in fact, as far away from the line as you could get in that space, they thought we should have gotten behind them and waited.

Not even entered the waiting area maybe? We couldn’t enter the waiting area without passing them. Or maybe waited until they decided to get up and then go get in line after they did?

Crazy! I wasn’t even sure what they expected us to do! But we were very “rude” and “line cutters”. Really? It’s not like we weren’t all going to make it on the boat either!

After more people started arriving they got up and got in line behind us. The lady literally pushed her way in front of me to make it out of the gate first. I think she embarrassed her teenagers and one of them said something I could hear. She said very loudly that she “just wanted to get on the boat!!” We were obviously all getting on, so I thought that was a little weird until my sister told me everything they’d been saying.

I’m a big believer at a bus stop with no line, if there’s a chance everyone won’t get on, you should be aware of who got there before you and try to make sure they get on before you. But if I decide to go sit on a bench 20 feet away and not get in line, that’s the risk I’m taking. I do not expect everyone else to stand aside when I get off said bench and start making my way to the front.

But I digress…

Whispering Canyon was very yummy. My dad wasn’t quite getting the loud obnoxious waiter for the first few minutes. I think my Dad thought he was just rude.

Although we thought his rudeness was just right when he yelled at the kids for not eating what they ordered or interrupting him when he was talking. :sohappy:

Dh and I split the chicken pasta dish. It was yummy and plenty of food for two.

DisneyWorld2011639.jpg

Here’s my Coke Zero. It looks like a normal coke right?

DisneyWorld2011636.jpg

And then look at it next to another, normal sized glass.

DisneyWorld2011638.jpg

It was simply the best Coke Zero glass ever!! Our waitress said she didn’t want to have to go back to the kitchen every time I wanted a refill. :)

My niece loved it! I let her have it after we were done eating.

Some of the group went back to the room to swim and some of us decided to go back to the Magic Kingdom afterwards. We took the bus just so we could compare times.

For the record, the boat trip there was 10 minutes, the bus was 8. Since the boat drops you off much closer, and is such a nice trip, I’d definitely recommend the boat.

The fall decorations are out!

We went right to Buzz and rode it. Shoot, no max score yet.

Then it was time for the People Mover! Finally!

DisneyWorld2011667.jpg

The girls decided to go ride Space. Dad and Mom went on the People Mover again and Ds and I tried Buzz again.

In the third room, I was shooting away when I heard a scream from behind me. “I DID IT!!!!”

It was Ds. I turned around and saw him with his arms raised in victory. So funny! I took a picture of his score while he twittered it.

DisneyWorld2011670.jpg

Dad and Mom were on the People Mover again. We saw them headed towards us. It looks like he was looking right at me!

DisneyWorld2011671.jpg

Apparently not. They never saw us.

We found everyone and the kids all rode Space twice while Dad, Mom and I sat on a bench and ate popcorn.

We left during the fireworks and took the boat back. Man I was so tired when we got back!!

I have never been able to max my score on Buzz yet either! :(

Whispering Canyon is a good time. One waitress made a man stand up and sing "I'm a little teapot" for everyone... Then made him sing it AGAIN because she felt he didn't do a good job the first time. It was hilarious!

I try so hard to max out my score on Buzz. I read up about the big targets but still always fail. Boo.

Thats too funny about the biotch at the boat. I don't understand how people can be that "on edge" when in Disney. You're in freakin' Disney World! Oh well.

Still loving your TR. Really solidifies that I must go to Disney next fall to see all the Halloween decorations. Awesome! Keep up the good work!

I gotta ask, how does the service and food at T-REX compare to Rainforest, because oUr experience at rainforest was Horrible..... And we are people who LOVE Planet Hollywood so that says ALOT!!!!

Crush, i have eaten there twice and both times the service was great and the food was better then expected. I personally think it is a step up from RFC.

That's kind of how I feel! I just don't understand all that complaining at Disney!

The only thing better than a Dolewhip Float is a Dolewhip Float with a shot of Malibu. :slurp:

Great trip report. Keep it coming!

Well I haven't tried that one!

Great update Tammy! I love MK all decked out in its fall decor.

Thanks disneygirl! :)

WL and MK in Halloween trim look great!

That coke-zero glass cracked me up. :)

Best. Coke. Zero. Glass. Ever. :D

Thursday, September 1 – Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom today! This is my son’s least favorite park. He would rather have skipped it and gone to Epcot again. We didn’t plan on spending the whole day there though.

Hey, I remembered to take pictures of our food this morning!! :lookaroun:D

DisneyWildernessLodge001.jpg

Love this little mouse:

DisneyWildernessLodge003.jpg

The bus came immediately and we were on. After we arrived and were waiting for everyone to get through bag check, a little girl next to me started shrieking. I mean shrieking. I thought temper tantrum but only for half a second. You could tell by her cry that she was either terrified, in pain, or both.

Her parents were trying to figure out what on earth was wrong and a cm ran over right away to help. It turns out she had a bee in her hair that had stung her. She was so sad. :( The cm and her Dad tried to calm her down, but it was a long time coming.

Mom left her sunglasses on the ride. We definitely had a theme of losing things this week.

Kali is a lame version of Grizzly River Run in Disneyland, but still a fun ride.

I got completely completely soaked. Should have broken out a poncho like the rest of women in our group! The men were, of course, much too manly for ponchos.
