Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

Here’s my dear, sweet children shooting big guns:

DisneyWorld2011281.jpg

We waited a while for this game. It’s called Let’s Go Jungle and each game can take 30 minutes or longer!! Crazy! There’s a sign on the back warning you that it takes 30+ minutes and it asks that you only do it once per visit. We didn’t actually make it in a car this time, but we did later in the week.

DisneyWorld2011284.jpg

We were ready for lunch next. We ate in Foodquest. Not Cheesecake Factory, but not bad.

The kids created a horrifying cyber coaster next. No way under heaven I was joining them for that ride! Bill Nye the Science Guy was kind enough to help them create it.

DisneyWorld2011285.jpg

I stood beside them the entire time encouraging them to pick easier sections!! They ignored me. Thankfully no one hurled because their car was flipping like - well like a crazy cyber coaster that teenagers created.

Back to Mighty Ducks next. Ds beat everyone again.

The kids got sucked into Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero after that.

DisneyWorld2011303.jpg

I had to drag them away to go the Wilderness Lodge! My parents were due to land at 1:15. I figured they would be at the Wilderness Lodge around 2:30 at the earliest so we left Disney Quest at 2:00.

When we got to the bus stop there was one very unhappy family there. When I say very, I mean very. The mom kept saying things like “This is ridiculous!” and, “Unbelievable!”

I thought, “Wow, they must have been waiting a really long time.”

They complained about how long the wait was to every Disney employee that walked by.

Then when the bus pulled up, the mom asked the dad how long they had been waiting. He said, “27 minutes!!!”

Um. What? 27 minutes? Really? Is it just me, or is that not that bad? It definitely doesn’t seem bad enough to ruin your day.

When we got on the bus they were still complaining. “Disney is going to hear about this!!”

27 minutes was our tagline for the rest of the trip. Every time someone complained about something one of us yelled, “It took 27 minutes!!” And every time someone asked how long until such and such, the answer was “27 minutes!!!”

Here was ds’ footwear choice for the week. He alternated between these, his crocs and another pair of barefoot tennis shoes. These are by far some of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen:

DisneyWorld2011306.jpg

Dad and Mom beat us by 15 minutes or so. We found them in the lobby and checked in. Our rooms were ready and our bags and groceries were here. Yay!

We ordered breakfast stuff and snacks from Garden Grocer. That worked great! We chose a delivery time of 2-4 so we wouldn’t have to wait in the room. They dropped everything off at bell services for us. The cm’s even put our cold stuff in the fridge for us. It was so awesome.

We raced up to the rooms to check them out. Our villas were right next to each other which was great! No wide angle lens and racing around before everyone put down their suitcases did not result in the best room pictures, but you get the idea:

DisneyWorld2011312.jpg

DisneyWorld2011313.jpg

I did not like the fact that the master bedroom didn’t have a balcony. That made it impossible to put my camera out in the mornings without waking up the girls sleeping the living area.

DisneyWorld2011314.jpg

DisneyWorld2011315.jpg

Here’s the view from one of our balconies:

Dh was supposed to land at 2:30. Not only did his flight make it, he was upgraded to first class!!

So basically hurricane Irene worked for both of us! We got to go to Disney a day early and Dh got to fly first class. Everyone was happy. :)

He got to the lodge very quickly. He said he didn’t wait a single minute at DME either. He walked right through the line and the bus left right when he got on.

After we unpacked a little we walked around the lodge.

Love these in the hallway:

They dropped off their carry ons and we caught a bus to Downtown Disney. Unlike the unhappy lady we had just encountered, we had very good luck catching busses. We didn’t wait longer than 10 minutes for one all week. Well, maybe once or twice, but still not bad. And many times they were there right away.

My complaints were with the amount of time it took once we were on the busses. The amount of stops we made was just crazy! I am firmly in the camp that if you are staying at a deluxe resort, you should have a dedicated bus. The stop at the Grand Floridian every time took so long! Sometimes we stopped at Fort Wilderness too! Our bus ride to Downtown Disney took over 45 minutes that first night.

And we were hungry!! So 45 minutes seemed like 3 hours!! I’m sure it was really only 27 minutes though.

DisneyWorld2011349.jpg

DisneyWorld2011350.jpg

DisneyWorld2011351.jpg

We went straight to Earl of Sandwich. I love that place. We sat outside – because we could!! I still couldn’t believe this weather.

After we ate, we asked the kids to vote between shopping and Disney Quest, and they picked Disney Quest! Woo hoo!

DisneyWorld2011352.jpg

We walked over and everyone activated their tickets. This time they asked for birth dates. We activated them for Friends too so we wouldn’t have to wait in line the next morning.

We went right to hockey which, of course, Ds won.

We split up for a little while after that and played miscellaneous games. Then we met up for a big game of Pirates. Pirates is still awesome to me. Great for all ages.

Afterwards Ds and one of my nephews snagged one of those 30 minute jungle games. We left them and played around some more.

We all met up again for a big game of Astroblasters later. Then we got some Mickey bars and desserts up top. Again, no Cheesecake Factory, but Foodquest does have great desserts. I had to resort to the horrific pop up flash to get any kind of picture:

DisneyWorld2011357.jpg

We left pretty soon after that and walked to the bus stop. We did stop in the awesome Vinylmation store first.

Friends weren’t coming in until late late! We thought we may be in bed by then. But no! We didn’t get back from Disney Quest until after 10. Friends came at 11. We said our hellos and then goodnights!

love your pics! but you should have had a warning that there would be disney quest pics. i can't even go inside that place without :hurl: and those images ick. especially the aladin, that is where it started for me.

now i can see noah and hubby chosing quest over shopping, but not me, i will spend the money while you all play.

i think wilderness lodge is cute. but from what i can see, it doesn't seem like your kind of luxury deluxe resort.

looking forward to more.
jenn, you better get a move on! :lookaroun

oh and i can so relate to the "27" comments.
i asked hubby about going somewhere once, and his response was "but we only have 1 car" i have no idea where the "1 car" came from or why he said it. but i still throw that back at him when he asks me a question like: can we have steak tonight? i will respond with "but we only have 1 car" :ROFLOL: i guess that is a "you had to be there moment.

now back to the trip report. :sohappy:

Woohoo... A Tammy trip report!!

Only once have we arrived at Disney a day earlier than we could use our passes to the parks. Honestly, it was surprisingly refreshing not to be in a hurry to get into a park. Your first day pictures reminded me of that.

Confession: I've NEVER been to DisneyQuest.

My son is all about footwear. Give him $1000 and he's going to buy footwear. :)

I can't do Aladdin, but I can do a lot of things in Disney Quest! I love it! I have a great time. :)

It's not quite my kind of deluxe, but don't get me wrong, it is a deluxe. I would definitely put it above the moderates.

I'm totally going to beat Jenn!:sohappy:

It was kind of relaxing in it's own way!

And what!! You need to try it! I wouldn't go when it's packed, and I probably wouldn't go if I had to pay for it alone. If it's an option on your AP's or you have water parks and more, you should try it! :)

Love it!

And I feel like our families live in some kind of parallel sports universe - first Auburn and now the Cubbies? Gotta love that! :D

I love traveling early with my kids. Most trips my husband doesn't join us until a day or two after we've arrived. Sometimes it's a little more stressful since my kids are still young and I have to watch them like a hawk, but most of the time it's more relaxing, because I seem to pace myself more knowing that there's no one else to worry about, etc. Does that make sense? I really think it will be even more fun when my kids reach your kids ages (not that I'm wishing it away for sure! :))

Looking forward to more!

ETA - oh and that story about the little girl getting off the airplane? Awful! I know we've all been there (frustration) as parents. But it makes you wonder - if that dad will do something like that in public? How does he treat her when he gets frustrated at home???? So scary. :-(

Our families are in a parallel sports AND Disney universe!!

That totally makes sense! It is fun to travel with two teenagers. I miss the days when they were excited by the characters and the magic of it all, but it sure is nice not to have to entertain them on a plane, worry about them wandering off, and even letting them go off on their own sometimes. They still love Disney, just in a different way now.

Yes, the Dad incident was a little disturbing. Or a lot. We have all been frustrated as parents. I don't think he was trying to hurt her. I think his intent was to get her moving, not to cause her pain. But disturbing is a good word.

Monday, August 29 – Epcot!

Yay! Epcot today!! This is my fam’s favorite park. We could spend several days there. But we only had one!

We agreed to leave the rooms at 8:15. Everyone was ready.

DisneyWorld2011359.jpg

DisneyWorld2011363.jpg

The bus was there within a few minutes, but the ride took 45 minutes again!! Yikes!! We missed the opening. Sadness.

We took our massive group through Security and strolled across Epcot.

We were together until we got in line. This happened pretty much every time we got in line. It was stunning how well we could stay together until that moment. I guess it’s hard to get 16 people anywhere!

We walked on Test Track. Great ride as always. The kids love it.

Next we went to Mission Space while dh walked to Soarin’ to get Fastpasses. The non riders made our way to the store and spent the time making silly space postcards to send to ourselves.

After the riders got off, we walked to Universe of Energy. Short wait outside:

DisneyWorld2011375.jpg

Dh commented that it’s amazing how well Ellen has stood up to the test of time.

It was almost time for our Soarin’ Fastpasses after we got off. We killed a little bit of time in Club Cool making everyone try Beverly. Here’s my adorable niece trying cokes. Obviously not Beverly.

We were all starving after our Coke appetizers so we went to eat next. We decided to eat at Sunshine Seasons. Well, everyone but my kids. They just wanted some good old chicken nuggets and fries from the Electric Umbrella. They took off and the rest of us went in.

DisneyWorld2011378.jpg

Dh and I decided to split the roasted half chicken. The picture on the menu had chicken and rice on the side with the beans smothering the rice. I really dislike beans so we asked for the beans on the side. He said, “The chicken doesn’t come with beans.”

We said, “Oh, the pictures shows it with beans!”

He said no it doesn't come with beans, so we just asked for the chicken and rice.

After he dished that up, he asked what kind of beans we wanted. :lookaroun

No idea what conversation we just had with him.

But here it is! With the beans on the side:

DisneyWorld2011380.jpg

Yummy dessert:

DisneyWorld2011381.jpg

After our meal we rode Soarin’. The graininess is a little troublesome, but the film and screen was still in better shape than Disneyland’s version.

Everyone was hankering to get to the World Showcase but we decided to finish Future World first. The Seas was the only other thing we really wanted to do so we walked over there.

DisneyWorld2011386.jpg

DisneyWorld2011388.jpg

We got in line behind a lady in her scooter that had a really hard time with all those switchbacks in line. She ran into the wall, stopped every few feet, etc.

We didn’t mind, but her adult daughter was horrified at the line piling up behind them. She was practically yelling at her mom by the end.

We all split up and looked around after the ride. It looked like it was going to rain before we went in, so we were wondering what it was like outside! We didn’t see scores of people pouring in wearing ponchos so we thought we were still okay.

Stupid pop up flash. I really need to start carrying my real flash. I’m such a lazy WDW photographer these days. I don’t want to bring a flash and I don’t want to switch lenses. I need a trip just to take pictures.

DisneyWorld2011390.jpg

When we came out we walked over to the Kim Possible station to get our mission for the day. While we were there it did start raining. We got out the ponchos and headed for Canada!

Great movie, Canada. Well done. We were especially excited to see Canada Place several times in the movie. We were just there in May sailing to Alaska on the Disney Wonder!

When we came out the rain was done! Did I mention this weather was amazing?

Some of our family was on a mission to get to France and get something to eat. They blitzed right through the UK!! Ds and I didn’t want to snub our neighbors across the pond so we did a little shopping there.

We walked to Japan. Right when we got in the giant store, we realized the next show was about to start in the US pavilion. We drug the kids out of the store and walked to America. We caught the end of the Voices of Liberty. They are so awesome. They give me goosebumps.

Most of us enjoyed the movie a lot, a few of us who shall be nameless enjoyed a little nap. How unpatriotic is that!!!

We went back to the store in Japan for a few minutes and then toured Germany.
