Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

I love the stormtrooper picture! Do you know if he is out on a regular basis? We are going in October and my 3 year old would be thrilled to see him.

I was super excited to see him! They are always around during Star Wars Weekend of course, but I haven't seen them before. I think they're out a little more with the Jedi Training Academy being full time and the new version of Star Tours.

My feelings exactly!

:)

the stormtropper/hollybelle one has got to be a classic! i can see a slew of hollybelle pics coming now. :ROFLOL:

It's a classic fail of a Hollybelle picture!!

And we were hungry!! So 45 minutes seemed like 3 hours!! I’m sure it was really only 27 minutes though.

LOL!! I love all of your reference to 27 minutes! So funny!! And I am so glad you included such an extensive review of DisneyQuest! I admit, we have never been there either, even though on our last trip, DH really wanted to squeeze it in one night. Sounds like you could really spend some time there and that my 3 boys would LOVE it!!

We are still saying 27 minutes at home!

I really think DisneyQuest gets a bad rap! It's so much fun!

We do love our big group trips! We've done some big group trips where we knew we all had different interests and we encouraged everyone to go their own way with scheduled meeting back up times. This one was easy though! We only broke up a few times, most of the time it was pretty easy to come to a consensus.

Except when we were eating! Then it wasn't so much that we all wanted something different, the problem was no one wanted to make a decision!! That's when ADR's help.:)

Saturday, September 3 – Travel Home

Last day. Sadness.

Well, it was the last day for us. Friends were going to stay with other friends for the night. Dad,Mom and Sister’s fam were staying one more night at Port Orleans French Quarter.

We woke up to the smell of bacon! My mom was cooking breakfast for all of us. Woo hoo!!

We kept the doors to the two villas propped open most of the week so the kids could come and go easily. I’m telling you, with that little crack in the door, you could smell that bacon all over the villas! We probably could have sold it.

We put on our swimsuits and packed a little.

After a delicious breakfast we finished packing and took our stuff downstairs.

We said goodbye to Friends, checked some bags and left others with bell services.

Our bus took a few minutes this morning, but the kids entertained themselves with a bean bag game.

Finally we were off to Typhoon Lagoon.

Saturday at a water park? Were we crazy? We weren’t even getting there at opening!

When we got in, we walked by the billboard that lists where there were still open chairs. That billboard was a stroke of genius!!

There were chairs by Crush and Gusher where we were headed anyway! Perfect. Now remember, my family needs more than just chairs. We need chairs in shade! :) That took a little more searching, but we found some. Dad and Mom were just hanging out in the shade today:

We went right to Crush and Gusher which had a 30 minute wait. It turns out, if you got a 3 person tube it was more like 10 minutes.

Next we went to the best wave pool there is!! As a side note, the best lazy river we’ve ever done was at Atlantis in the Bahamas. The best wave pool though? Typhoon Lagoon.

I love how there is a collective scream every time that wave is released. I am blown away by the strength of that wave every single time it hits me. One time I ran into a poor old man and was all over him for about 10 feet. :lookaroun

I apologized and blushed profusely while he laughed and said he understood.

Afterwards we played in the waves for a while before we got lunch.

I had the barbeque sandwich. Totally forgot to take pictures but it was very good.

After lunch we went to shark reef. I really enjoy shark reef but I wasn’t in the mood for that freezing water today. I stayed out and took pictures.

My sister and nephews loved it so much they did it twice. Here’s the whole group:

Then, sadly, it was time for us to get back to the Wilderness Lodge to catch our bus. We all walked out and said goodbye to the fam who was catching the French Quarter bus. Since we don’t live near any of them anymore, it was quite sad.

When we got back to the lodge we got our bags and walked down to the oversize bathrooms in the villas. It was surprisingly busy in that normally quiet lobby! I laid the suitcase on the floor and got out everyone’s clothes. I tried to hide the undergarments, but they seemed to keep falling out on the floor. :lookaroun We were quite the rednecks. :D

We changed and went back to the main lobby. We shopped a little and then relaxed in the lobby for a while.

I was trying so hard not to be sad. Are you sure we don’t need these anymore?

DisneyWildernessLodge308.jpg

We didn’t get to relax for very long before we had to go outside and wait on our bus.

See how sad everyone is? Or are they just tired of getting their picture made?

DisneyWildernessLodge310.jpg

One thing that helped my sadness? We were upgraded to first class on our return flight!! Woo hoo!! :sohappy:

So to sum up!

The time of year? Excellent! If your kids start school late and you’re willing to risk high temperatures, it’s a great time to go. We didn’t have long waits for anything! The crowds picked up on Friday before labor day, but overall it was pretty empty.

The weather? Amazing! I fully understand we lucked out. You can not count on that type of weather every August. We were expecting oppressive heat and didn’t get that at all.

The Wilderness Lodge? Beautiful. The location was great too. We loved the bus to Magic Kingdom.

The Villas? Very nice. Not my favorite villa by any means. I’m still not a huge fan of the theming, it felt a little like upscale camping. But the villas were a nice size and the beauty of the grounds and theming of the lobby made up for it. I would definitely put the Wilderness Lodge above the moderate resorts and of course above the values. I’m just more of a Contemporary Resort kind of person. :D

The busses? Not so hot. As I said, we didn’t wait long for any of them, but sharing busses with other resorts was for the birds.

Overall? We had a great trip! I didn’t spend near enough time taking pictures, but that’s just hard to do with so many people. Combine that with not having a lens I was excited about and I feel kind of “eh” about my pictures. It also felt like a short trip with only one day in each park. But all in all in was awesome! :)

Great report and pictures!

I'm glad you got some pics of Typhoon Lagoon. I noticed the same thing about the "big wave". As you hear the "whoosh" when the wave starts people in the water would scream and little kids playing in the shallow end would scramble to the safety of the sand. It was like a tsunami warning went off.

We couldn't take advantage of the 3-person raft, but I'm happy to see you did. C&G is a bunch of fun!

Thanks again for the time and effort.

We ordered breakfast stuff and snacks from Garden Grocer. That worked great! We chose a delivery time of 2-4 so we wouldn’t have to wait in the room. They dropped everything off at bell services for us. The cm’s even put our cold stuff in the fridge for us. It was so awesome.

We used the Garden Grocer on our recent trip as well...what a great convenience to pre-order and have everything waiting for you when you arrive. Saved us a ton of room in out suitcases not having to take mountains of supplies for our 11 month old.

The WL Villas look fantastic! We stayed at WL as well and really enjoyed our visit. We are putting in some very hard consideration to joining the DVC and seeing your pics is helping the case!

Yes! The whoosh was like a tsunami warning! It was so funny and cool!

I haven't read your Typhoon Lagoon update yet! I'll make my way over there soon! :)

Wasn't that so nice? I would definitely recommend them. The delivery charge was perfectly reasonable too.

Joining DVC isn't for everyone, but I'll tell you, we haven't regretted it for one second!! :)

It was outstanding! I had no problem with the costs either. I can see us utilizing this service for every future trip. So convenient!

We did receive some information while we were there and toured a couple rooms on the Boardwalk before dinner one night. It got us thinking hard enough to send away for the DVD and see what happens. I could see where it would benefit us but a lot of decisions still to be made.

I love Boardwalk! It was definitely one of my favorites. Dh reached the point a few years ago when we decided it would be a good deal for us. We were going anyway, and we were tired of staying in value resorts with our kids sleeping in our room. Or staying in value resorts because someone we were traveling with didn't want to stay anywhere nicer. Our first stay in a one bedroom villa (at Boardwalk) felt downright luxurious compared to other trips. We spent more time in our room then we ever had before!

If you have any questions, just ask! :)

We like to travel (three trips this year even with the little one) so we are thinking that this may end up being a great way to save money in the long run and still have the chance to stay at some amazing places along the way.

I'm sure we will likely have some further questions once we receive our DVD so it's good to know we have someone to turn to if we need some answers! Thank you!
