Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

We were all starving at this point so we went back to the towels to eat.

Next we all rode Teamboat Springs. We waited about 10-15 minutes for the skylift but there was no wait up top.

I love that ride!

2011DisneyWaterPark043.jpg

2011DisneyWaterPark046.jpg

Next we walked over to the other tube slides. We were very sad to see that we had to carry our own tubes up!! How Six Flags is that? Some of us :lookaroun were huffing and puffing at the top. It was a lot of work for a vacation!!

2011DisneyWaterPark051.jpg

We went back to the racing slides after that where the line had grown immensely. We probably waited 30 minutes that time.

We went back to the towels for some snacks after that. Someone had something blue:

About half the group went for another spin on the lazy river.

Dd and one of my nephews had been wanting to ride Summit Plummet all day! When they went to get in line after lunch it was closed. Finally they announced that it was open! They took off! We hoped to catch them coming down later.

Dh and Dad went back to the room, and I got my camera out of the locker while everyone else built more sand mountains and relaxed. We walked over to see the kids come down after about 30 minutes. We were beginning to think we had missed them when we still didn’t see them for a while. Finally we could see them on the last set of stairs. There was a very dark cloud coming and we just knew they were going to shut it down right before they rode. Thankfully they just made it! After 45 minutes in line they came shooting down. They both loved it.

DisneyWorld2011473.jpg

Here’s dd. She’s a little harder to see:

DisneyWorld2011474.jpg

I was very excited to see the photopass guys pictures. They were sitting at the bottom taking everyone’s picture with a ginormous lens. Well they used those lenses to take a picture of them at the very top, right when they laid down. What a strange place for a picture! There’s all that action happening below it and they take a picture before anything happens! Very strange.

The range of mountains became one mountain while we were gone:

DisneyWorld2011468.jpg

We caught the bus back to the hotel after that and all took showers. We decided to try T-Rex for dinner. While we were changing Mom realized she had lost her ticket – oops! I called Blizzard Beach but it wasn’t there. The good news though, it was a military ticket so it was registered in the system. They said just to go to guest services and get a new one printed. Phew!

We pretty much walked right in to T-Rex! Even with a party of 16. That restaurant is so well done. Our waiter got chatty at one point. He was telling us how slow business had been. Our dinner was quite yummy though. Completely forgot to take pictures of it.

The 'rents:

We went to Goofy’s Candy Company for dessert and then back to the room.

A little chatting and then bedtime!!

Our family did BB last November. I hadn't been in like 8 years but we had a blast. Summit Plummit is awesome but I will admit, I almost chicken out everytime I get to the top. haha

Summit Plummet is the scariest ride at WDW. I always say Dinosaur is, but the truth is that the first time I did SP it took all I had to not chicken out. :)
Once you get going though, its a blast!

Continuing to enjoy the report and pictures!

We were a little worried that my nephew would chicken out at the top. After waiting all that time!! He's only 10!! But no! He loved it!

You may be right. I can ride Dinosaur, although it is crazy scary, but I haven't gotten up the guts to try Summit Plummet!!

Actually considering renting points at VWL before our cruise in April. Do you recommend?

Do I recommend VWL? Yes, I do. If you have seen the theming and you like it, go for it. The resort itself is beautiful. The pool is great. We had a great time in the pool by the villas, too. Roaring Forks was good, and the proximity to the Magic Kingdom was awesome! :)

We had great service and food. Our waiter was very attentive.

There are so many of these and I think they are so sweet!!! What a great kid you have there. So kind to his little cousin!

Aren't they sweet? I know how much my niece loves my ds, but I didn't realize how many pictures I had of the two of them until I started processing them.:)

Wednesday, August 31 – Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom today! Magic Kingdom doesn’t have my favorite rides or atmosphere, but it has a castle! :D And it makes me feel like I’m at Disney World.

I made everyone get up a little earlier today. We left at 8:00! Crazy!

Sunrise from our balcony:

On our way to the boats:

We went right to Buzz to Fastpass it and head to Space Mountain. Well Space was broke! We waited for about 10 minutes and then bailed. We decided to try Indy Speedway. The line didn’t look long until we turned the corner and realized they had only one side of one lane open. Mercy. We waited way too long for that ride.

DisneyWorld2011551.jpg

DisneyWorld2011552.jpg

DisneyWorld2011553.jpg

DisneyWorld2011554.jpg

DisneyWorld2011556.jpg

After we got off we walked back to Space which had reopened. The wait time said 5 minutes but the line was out the door. I asked a cm if the line was being held somewhere inside or if that was the line. That was the line. No way!

We fastpassed and moved on.

We went to ride Buzz. It was a walk on so we didn’t even use our Fastpasses. Ds and I had done some studying before hand for the big targets. It was my goal to max out at least once.

I didn’t. Nor did Ds. Although we did kill everyone else. :D

When we got off, we found out that Friend leaned her head back to tell someone something and her sunglasses fell right off her head! She knew right where they were, but the cm’s couldn’t get them. We decided to ride again to see if anyone could reach them.

No luck! On the sunglasses or the maxing out the score.

We went to the Laugh Floor next. They didn’t pick my joke, but my dad was “That Guy”. That was quite funny. He hammed it up every time he was on the camera.

Finally we were off to ride Space! This time there was no line outside. We decided to risk not using our Fastpasses. We were glad we did, it was a walk on. Every time I ride Space at WDW I am reminded how much I like Disneyland’s version better.

Being jerked around once was enough for me. We split up and some went back to Buzz and others to Space again. Still no luck maxing out that score!

We met for lunch at Cosmic Rays. Ds and one of my nephews really wanted pizza so I walked to Pinocchios with them. We brought the pizza back and ate with everyone else in a pretty empty restaurant.

DisneyWorld2011561.jpg

DisneyWorld2011562.jpg

DisneyWorld2011563.jpg

Some went to the tea cups next while the rest of us rode various Fantasyland rides. Everything was pretty much a walk on or 5-10 minute wait so it wasn’t hard to split up.

After we finished we walked over to Haunted Mansion. The updates are really great. Since there was no line we didn’t feel like we could take a lot of time in the graveyard. We didn’t want to hold everyone up!
