Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

After lunch we walked to the safari.

It was the hottest part of the day and I wasn’t expecting much, but we saw most everything. No lions though.

We strolled through the Forest Trail next.

DisneyWildernessLodge129.jpg

DisneyWildernessLodge135.jpg

We saw a few glimpses of an adorable little monkey!

DisneyWildernessLodge136.jpg

After that we split up again. Friends went to Lion King. Some went to Bug’s Life and Nemo. Everyone else went to Everest and rode it three times. Not me! I’m only good for once a day on Everest. It makes me very dizzy!

DisneyWildernessLodge140.jpg

Then we all headed back to the room. We relaxed in the room for a couple of hours while it rained outside.

We ate dinner at Roaring Forks.

Most of us went back to Disney Quest that night. I didn’t bring the camera because pictures are so hard to take in there and it was raining when we left.

I actually borrowed a hoodie from my sister that night! That’s how good it felt outside! :D

We played hockey first of course. Which Ds won – again!

After that we all did pirates again. The cm showed us a trick to shoot faster and told us it would work on Toy Story too! It didn’t work that well for me on Toy Story though.

We split up and played games for a while after that.

We did regroup for some of their amazing desserts. I didn’t bring my camera so I don’t have pictures, but I had an incredible red velvet cupcake. I believe it’s the same one they sell in Starring Rolls.

We left around 9:15, stopped in the candy shop, and caught a bus back.

Animal Kingdom today! This is my son’s least favorite park. He would rather have skipped it and gone to Epcot again. We didn’t plan on spending the whole day there though.

A man after my own heart - skipping AK and going to EPCOT instead. He's got good taste (except for those shoes w/the toes...)

No way! Splash is way tamer than Everest!! Although on Everest you don't see it coming...

I don't remember your gorilla pictures! Was he doing something bad?:lookaroun

We didn't see the baby elephant! Sadness.

Goofy and Pluto are right next to Dino land. Kind of between the store, Primeval Whirl and Triceratop Spin.

Friday, September 2 – Disney Hollywood Studios

The Studios today! Sunrise from the balcony first. Well, maybe not sunrise. I’m sure I wasn’t up that early!:

DisneyWildernessLodge145.jpg

We took pictures at the bus stop:

DisneyWildernessLodge149.jpg

Dad, Mom and all their kids:

DisneyWildernessLodge173-1.jpg

The bus came right after our portraits that I put in the first post of this thread. We were on a roll with busses! If only they didn’t take so stinking long to get somewhere once we got on them!

We were the only ones on the bus this morning! No, I take that back. There was one family behind me that was quite amused as I tried to balance in a moving bus and take everyone’s picture.

DisneyWildernessLodge182.jpg

We split up for the mad dash to Toy Story. Dh and Ds took all the tickets and scooted up to the rope drop. After the rope drop, they were walked back to the Fastpass machines where the two they were using, promptly broke!

We stalled near the front of the standby line waiting for them. They finally made it to us and we jumped in line. We waited about 20 minutes, not bad.

DisneyWildernessLodge186.jpg

DisneyWildernessLodge187.jpg

While we were in line we used our handy dandy Lines app to check out the lines in the park. Rockin Roller Coaster was closed. We were hoping that ended soon.

After we were done we walked over to Star Tours. Look at how empty this section was:

I haven’t done Star Tours in years, I just can’t handle simulators well. But I could not miss this! I meant to take some Dramamine this morning, but I forgot! Shoot!!

Luckily, I was pretty sure I could just close my eyes and be okay.

DisneyWildernessLodge194.jpg

Wow! It was great! I was so glad I did it. Oh, and I was the rebel spy! :D

Rockin Roller Coaster was still closed. We fastpassed it and rode Tower. We waited about 15 minutes to enter the Twilight Zone.

After this dh, dd and I left the park to meet some friends who were in town. We caught the boat to Boardwalk to wait for them. There was a pirate cruise going on:

We ate at ESPN. There was literally one other table of people in ESPN. I was too embarrassed to take pictures of our food with non Disney friends there, so no pictures! But the philly cheesesteak was delicious!

When we were on the boat back we started texting everyone to see where they were and what they had done. A lot actually! They ate at the commissary, rode the Great Movie Ride and watched Beauty and the Beast and the Indy show.

DisneyWildernessLodge248.jpg

They were about to use the Toy Story fastpasses so we met them there.

DisneyWildernessLodge249.jpg

DisneyWildernessLodge252.jpg

After that we walked over to Herbie’s Drive in to get some frozen cokes. We accidentally got there as one of only two stunt shows of the day was letting out. We were definitely salmon swimming upstream.

Rockin was still closed!! We were going to have some very sad kids if it didn’t open!

We tried to visit Phineas and Ferb next but the line was crazy!

We finished our cokes and went to see Muppets.

I think my nephew was trying to figure out where he could get a milkshake:

The sound in Muppets was so messed up! It was a good 5 seconds ahead of the film. It was beyond annoying.

After that we rode Star Tours again. Well, I didn’t. I didn’t want to push my luck. Everyone said they liked the second time even more than the first.

After that Rockin was open! Woo hoo! We went right there.

That night we had early reservations at 50’s Prime Time. Since we had just eaten at ESPN a few hours before we didn’t go. Big mistake!!

Everyone said it was incredible. They had Byron and Elizabeth and said they laughed for the entire hour and a half.

Shoot! I should have gone and just gotten dessert. I’ve been before, but missing that was one of my biggest regrets this trip.

I had a pretzel. :D Gertie’s was closed:

DisneyWorldDay5b6.jpg

While I was off getting a pretzel, I ran into a stormtrooper! :sohappy:

His handler was there taking pictures and giving everyone instructions on approaching him. I waited my turn and approached. When I turned around, she was gone! Well shoot! Who was going to take our picture?

I know!! We did a Hollybelle picture!

DisneyWorldDay5b7.jpg

Which, apparently, I am not very good at. :lookaroun:lol:

She showed up a few second later and took a slightly better one:

After that I found everyone and we split up until the American Idol finale. We went to the Narnia walk through and One Man’s Dream while the kids went to ride Rockin one more time.

The American Idol finale was great. I really love that show.

Afterwards we went to Fantasmic to end the night. I am never disappointed in that show. It’s a lot of work to see it and we don’t always stay, but I am never disappointed when we do.

It was late when we got back but the kids went for one last swim before bed.

Typhoon Lagoon and departure day tomorrow.

Tammy, I always love your trip reports. You guys always look like you are having a great time. And the pictures are amazing.

As a complete novice what kind of camera or exposure are you using? The photos have such a warm feeling about them.

Still loving the report and the pictures are great.

They make me a little sad tho. This time next weekend we were supposed to be at the "world". We had to cancel because of stupid grown up stuff. Sometimes it's stinks being a grown up.

Tammy! I adore your self-portrait with the Stormtrooper. :D I've always wanted to take my and Brett's picture with a character with the UWA. But the times I've had it mounted and thought to do it I got the vibe that the CM would act like there was something wrong with us if I had. :lookaroun  You've inspired me to do it anyway on our upcoming trip!

Hooray for being the Rebel Spy! I, too, usually have problems with Star Tours but enjoyed it when we rode in May.

I love the sunrise pictures, they're so good. And feel so wilderness-y!

So sad you only have one day left. It seems like you just got there. Sigh.

Thanks jnDizFan! I tend to edit a little on the warm side. I've been playing with some new editing and I'm not sure I'm crazy about it.

I have a Canon 50D. I usually had a Tamron 28-75 lens on it. I wouldn't recommend this specific model right now. I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the way it handles noise. It should be much better than it is. I have heard they fixed these problems with the 60D though.

Sorry, that's probably more information than you wanted. I'm waiting for my husband to read this and remember my birthday is coming and I need a new camera!!! :D

If you are looking for a good entry level SLR, the Canon Rebels are great. :)

I'm sad I only have one more day too! It wasn't really, but it felt like a short trip!

I love the stormtrooper picture! Do you know if he is out on a regular basis? We are going in October and my 3 year old would be thrilled to see him.
