Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

We like to travel (three trips this year even with the little one) so we are thinking that this may end up being a great way to save money in the long run and still have the chance to stay at some amazing places along the way.

I'm sure we will likely have some further questions once we receive our DVD so it's good to know we have someone to turn to if we need some answers! Thank you!

It does give you the chance to stay at amazing places. Our grand villa at Animal Kingdom Lodge last year was gorgeous beyond words. :)

No problem! Ask away!

Animal Kingdom looks so great. We actually had AKL booked for our trip but changed to WL based on proximity to Magic Kingdom.

I love love love the theming of AKL. Waking up to animals outside your balcony is amazing.

But! If you want to spend a lot of time at Magic Kingdom, then Wilderness Lodge is great for that.

Well, you know I loved it!

One day I will have enough time and care enough to put 'learn how to use my camera' at the top of my to do list. And when I do, I'm going to take pictures just like you and Hollybelle! That's my goal. :D

Where are 'we' off to next? I'm already looking forward to the next TR!

I'm not positive where and when my next trip is yet! I'm working on some options...:)

I love how there is a collective scream every time that wave is released. I am blown away by the strength of that wave every single time it hits me. One time I ran into a poor old man and was all over him for about 10 feet. :lookaroun

I agree! It is sooooo fun!! I LOLed when I read about the poor old man! Funny!!

Your trip sounded so great! I can't imagine traveling with such a large group but you maked it sound like a breeze. So glad the weather, transportation and villas were great!

Poor old man.

We've gotten pretty good at traveling with big groups! Now it's kind of the norm for us. We try to emphasize to everyone that it's their vacation, they paid a lot of money for it, and they need to do what makes them happy. If you want to ride Small World 6 times while we go to Splash Mountain? Do it!! It's okay to separate!! We always meet up again at some point! :)

Tammy! Darn you! I just read this entire thing in Women in Antiquity and don't know a thing about Euripides' "Medea" tragic play or something.

But I do have SOME notes, they're just not about a crazy child-killer in ancient Greece.

Saratoga looks pretty awesome - it's such a pretty resort when you drive by it, I find - but then, it might be because Mom has wanted to stay there FOREVER so it's been drilled into my head. The pictures were great, thanks! I also loved the WL pictures - that kitchen is adorable.

I'm laughing at the perfect use of "Rookie Mistake" - c'mon, keep your tickets with you AT ALL TIMES. You never know when Mickey will call you - I do this when I'm at home. I tried to use my key to the world card instead of my debit yesterday at the Save Easy in rural NB, no one was feeling the magic.

Okay, tell me of these DS shoe things. A few people had them when we were there and maybe they're en route to Canada? Are they comfy? What are they called - because they look like dino feet.

EPCOT DAY:
I have written - "your niece is the cutest! Frame that Club Cool picture!". But there are SO MANY adorable ones, of your nephews too. Good lookin' famjam.

Your picture of the Seas reminds me of last week - I was in French class with this guy that I know relatively well, and we were talking about the gender of nouns and how feminists in France are all about keeping the masculine of professions because they are equally as capable as men (yes, really, this is what I have it sit through) - anyway, someone used the example of calling Tangled by that named as opposed to Rapunzel so boys will watch it too. Then Thomas and I got into a huuuuge Disney discussion and we were yelling across the quad about how when you go to EPCOT you "go to Test Track and get FPs, then Mission Space, then ride TT, then Soarin', then (and this is what he said) "that frigging Nemo ride" AND THEN YOU CAN HAVE A CUP OF COFFEE. I love bonding with random people about Disney. This was a long story, I'm sorry.

The picture of the 'rents at T-Rex is priceless, keep that one.

Re: Buzz maxing out - good on DS. However, you TWEET, Tammy. You don't "twitter" you TWEET.

Stormtrooper/Holly picture is a keeper. That needs to be a profile picture somewhere, hahaha.

Thanks for another great read! They always bring me so much joy because yours was one of the first I read while on these boards - and PS: can I tag along sometime? I'm jealous of all your nice pictures and want them to be of MY family! Photoshooootzzzz ;)

Well, in that case, it sounds like I saved you from an hour or so of wanting to poke your eyes out with a fork!

Your mom and Saratoga are like my dh was with Wilderness Lodge!

I fogot that cardinal rule. I often do have an old one in my wallet. It's always sad when I try to use a cruise Key to the World card to get food in WDW. If anyone should be feeling the magic, it's them!!

Okay, tell me of these DS shoe things. A few people had them when we were there and maybe they're en route to Canada? Are they comfy? What are they called - because they look like dino feet.

I could have some of these details wrong, I really need Ds to write this answer. They are called "toe shoes", "barefoot shoes", or "five fingers". They look like gorilla feet to me although dino feet may work too. They are all over here! At least in Colorado. Maybe not as much in DC. People love them for hiking, running, etc. They're supposed to be better for your feet because they're more natural or something like that. Ds insists one day we will all be converts. He "rocks the five fingers" in cross country meets.

In regards to the above post...

I have recently learned from other people's trip reports to break up the quotes so it's more obvious what I'm answering. Maybe I went a bit overboard with that!! :lookaroun

Whein, that's my fault too - I'm too chatty for my own good.

And you're right, Classics makes me want to poke my eyes out with a fork. Go again before December so I can have another class of relief ;)

Loved the report and the photos, Tammy! I'm glad that DC hasn't had any other natural disasters in the past couple of weeks. My in-laws live 30 miles north of there, so I will just use those as signs that I'm not supposed to move there either. :ROFLOL:

For such a short trip it was definitely packed full! I really like DisneyQuest, as well. I haven't been in a few years, but my husband went two years ago on his first trip and declared it "a dream come true."

I laughed when your dad was picked to be "that guy" in Monster's Inc., especially to read that he played it up. That's awesome Disney spirit there.

Also, I'm glad that you enjoyed the Wilderness Lodge. I think the lobby is so beautiful and the grounds picturesque, but I have to agree that the room theming is just not really my thing. I'll take clean, sleek lines over ruggedness any day, but I'll take the price of the WL.

See! Man and teenage heaven. :)

He had excellent Disney spirit, much to the delight of his grandchildren.

Yes, yes, yes. That's it exactly!! I'd still recommend it because it's a great resort for the price! But I also prefer the clean, sleek look.

Thanks for reading, Rachel! :)
