Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

Next we made our way to Norway to pick up our Kimmunicators. We did the mission in China much to my family’s chagrin. We have done that one a few times, but it’s awesome!!

Here are the boys discussing their mission.

The boys beat the girls and there was no end to the smack talking that ensued.

After we saved the World we were off to Norway and Maelstrom. There was about a 10 minute wait for the boat. After we finished we found a cool place to sit while the girls did another mission in Norway.

The adults all tried to decide where to eat dinner. When you don’t have ADRs it’s so hard to decide!!

We mostly agreed on Fish and Chips so we split up and headed that way. I stopped on the way to get Dd and I chicken sandwiches.

After dinner we decided we were just about done! Some of us went to Spaceship Earth and some went to Test Track. We all happened to catch the same bus back.

DisneyWorld2011450.jpg

When we walked up, one person was there. She told us she had been waiting 10 minutes already. Well at least it wasn’t 27!!!

We went swimming when we got back. We started off in the big pool, but it was a little crowded and hard to keep track of the kids with the big rock in the middle. We switched over to the little pool and spread out. It was really great.

They were showing a movie and roasting marshmallows around the corner, but we didn’t partake.

When we went back up we relaxed in the room for a while before bed. I'll say one thing about the villas. Any villa we've stayed in actually. When your room is so big and comfortable, you want to spend time in it. Having a couch to relax on is so different than sitting on a bed and watching TV.

Ah...the Wilderness Lodge, how I miss you!

I love it when the timing for the buses is spot on. The first time we ever used Magical Express (last year) we waited for like 5min and our resort was the first stop. It was so great!

"27 minutes!" On our honeymoon we heard a guy yelling at his wife, as he boarded a bus at Animal Kingdom, "Sci-Fi theater! 6:45!" He kept repeating it back to her like she was dumb or something. It was pretty funny because he ran to the back set of doors on the bus to say it one more time. That ended up being our running joke for subsequent trips. We still use it to this day.

Glad to see and hear about DisneyQuest. It's been 6 years since I've been and I gotta say I LOVED that hockey game, even though I lost every. single. time.

Can't wait to read more!

P.S. Howdy neighbor and welcome to the DC area!

YAY!!! You started your trip report! :sohappy: I'm so glad you were able to get a flight out before Irene hit. We flew out of philly to MCO on Wed 8/31. I swear that whole weekend I was a nervous wreck that the storm would delay us getting to Disney. Thankfully that was NOT the case.

I have to say I don't think the weather could have been any better for this time of year. Yes it was hot but not overly, or at least I thought so, and in the evening when the sun went down it was the perfect temp for me! :animwink:

Can't wait to read more. I'll be sure to look in the backgound of your pics to see if I'm in any! :ROFLOL:

Yay, I'm so glad you got out too!! I was super worried too! I'm glad we both made it.

That is exactly what I thought about the weather! And the beginning of the week was even a little cooler. There were a couple of times on the 30th at the water park that I was wishing it was a little warmer! But that was it. It was hot, but not overly at all! The shade and the evenings were the perfect temperature!

Tell me if you see yourself!

Another great TR, Tammy! We found that the wait times for buses were extremely reasonable on our trip as well. I only waited more than 5-10 minutes once, and I only had to stand once on a bus (because the boats to POFQ weren't running due to weather).

Of course, I couldn't imagine the unbearable 27-minute wait that poor woman had to endure (the horror ). Some people are too funny!

Great trip report and pictures. I'm enjoying it a lot. Lots like you had a lot of fun. Glad it wasn't hot for you all. My only complaint is I have been waiting 27 mins for some more of the report.:D

Tuesday, August 30 – Blizzard Beach

We debated which water park to go to for a while. I love Typhoon Lagoon. The wave machine there is just awesome to me. But we hadn’t been to Blizzard Beach in a while, so the kids voted for Blizzard Beach.

I was pretty excited about today! We haven’t devoted a whole day to a water park in a few years. It seems like out last few trips we were the only ones who wanted to go, so we either didn’t, or we worked in a morning trip and then met everyone at a park later.

Friends got up early and went to Universal.

We “slept in” until 8(!) and left at 9:30. We also decided to pack some lunches today. Crazy!!

Our bus pulled up right away. Long bus ride again, so we missed the park opening.

Is it just me, or does my mom not look like she’s going swimming?

DisneyWorld2011457.jpg

Ds and dh walk exactly alike. It cracks me up.

When we walked in we realized I made another rookie mistake. Towels!! Duh!! I completely forgot to grab some! So we rented some and found a space in the shade. My dad has had lots of battles with skin cancer so shade and sunscreen are a must for our fair haired freckled family.

Here’s where the quality of pictures takes a nose dive. Well, I think so anyway, lol. If these look as good as my DSLR in manual with RAW pictures then what the heck am I doing that for? I love having a water proof camera but I use it to document, not take great pictures. The shutter lag makes me crazy!!

We ended up the racing slides first. We waited about 10 minutes in line. Everyone loved it and we went right back to the top.

After that we took a ride on the lazy river! I found out that the lazy river with my sister’s family is anything but lazy. They walk through without tubes, swimming, dunking, flipping tubes (only our family) and the list goes on. Look at the sequence of photos! Doesn’t it wear you out?
