But no, I never rode the original. I wasn't even alive when the original opened. All I have ever known is the version we have now and that is a version that gives me such annoyance
I was really upset when first riding the current version in comparison to my last ride in 1997 or so. Perhaps the most egregious blow was Imageworks Lite compared to the old 2nd story.

Now having been back a few times since I've continued riding it because while not as good as the original, it's still a fun concept and better than a number of other rides that seem to be going nowhere. My son, having no experience to compare it to, demands to see Figment every time we go to Epcot, and sometimes asks to leave another park to see him

The Original 'Journey' was a absolutely stunning creation in person.
Videos do NOT full capture the full experience at all.
Very difficult to get the massive impact of what that Attraction truly was from just a tiny, dark, and blurred video image.
Not at all knocking Martin's videos ( he does indeed do a excellent job ) but the imaginative scale, colored lighting, effects, ambiance, and general awe inspiring vibe is just not able to be captured in video format.
Video cameras in general had not advanced enough to properly capture low light settings, which is a shame considering what happened tech wise once the Original was closed.
Oh what could have been captured....

The Original was indeed truly unique, and a amazing achievement at that.
Timeless. Inspiring. Appealing. 'Magical'.
One of THE finest dark rides ever created.
From it's concept, design, engineering technology, effects, and lasting impact long after you left the Park...nothing compares in my opinion.
It is sorely missed by those of us who remember it back in the day.
No 'rose-colored' glasses here....it was indeed landmark effort.
If you had been fortunate to have been around to experience it in person chances are you might have more fully understood it's impact.

The only reason the character of Figment is still around and is being regularly 'exploited' on Park merchandise today is because of those who still remember and treasure the Original Attraction.
Us 'Original fans' fondly recall that amazing Attraction and what that character originally represented - a 'anything is achievable' outlook, and not the bratty pest he was turned into.
It has nothing to do with the later / current incarnations....it is all about the 'nostalgia' it creates in those who remember the Original and a longing within those same people for seeing that Pavilion return to form.
Hopefully, some day....

Well said and I agree completely.

I think we all know, or should let it sink in, that we will never get the original back. The current is an abomination. Which leads me to ask if the powers that be were to put in Inside Out with a very large Figment presence (a la the OG) and a high build quality, would that make you happy?

I rather have that then nothing.

I recall something about the ride track having a set of fog machines thru the ride, to create the effect that the cars were "riding on clouds" but that also was nixed just after being turned on (don't know if it was removed or just turned off, but always wondered and wish I could find a photo of said effect.)
According to Ron Schneider, the original figment, the fog effect was absolutely brilliant, with even more amazing tech behind it. The fog machines operated off of just water, which was both green and cheap for Disney. However, they had painted the ride with water-based paints, so whenever they turned on the machines the ride would start to peel a little bit. As such, they were never turned on with only a few exceptions, though never removed.
The source is in the video linked below at the 36 minute and 11 second mark, in an interview between Kevin Purjurer (maybe that's how you spell it) from Defunctland and Ron Schneider. I'd suggest listening to the whole thing, as there's a ton of interesting stories from Ron and the early days of Epcot/Figment.

Just because we can't have the original back doesn't mean we can't have a reimagining of the original concept using modern technology. Now if they just move the DVC lounge to a different park or WoL perhaps we can get a proper Imageworks going upstairs... or put that on the ground floor and let us fly with Figment

Again, I agree but is that the Disney of today? No. It's IP based rides. We need to accept it and hope for the best.

I am thankful that there are comics because that might be the only reason he's hung around so long. I truly don't understand why Figment and Dreamfinder aren't on Disney Junior, however. It's not a heavy lift to reintroduce them to a young audience and see if that warrants a true refurb of Imagination
