My cousin just came back from her trip, and her, her husband and her two kids all had to go to the Doctor for welts they had all over their bodies, UGGHHH it was bed bug bites! She was freaked because she had no experience with bed bugs before and she said the itching was crazy and had NO CLUE what the welts were.

She complained to the hotel and spoke to the manager. But I'm afraid that the resort will do nothing about it....I really like the Caribbean Beach but now I don't want to stay there!

What everyone has to understand with the value of the dollar falling you are getting more international tourist in Disney World. Because of that some people around the world dont maintain the same hygiene as most Americans do.
That is flat too funny....

By that I mean funny boneheaded comment

Clean people get bedbugs as well as those who are not so clean.

Bingo! A lot of people don't realize that it really can happen to anyone, lack of hygiene or not. As a salon owner/hairstylist I have seen outbreaks of head lice on a clean, clear scalp, infact they thrive better on a clean area than on a dirty one. I'm so flippin itchy now! Lunch anyone?!:hurl:

Actually what you might not realize is that bedbugs attack a certain type of host...not an international one since they rarely check for passports but they do attack small minded bigots so while just about every other person on this board should be fine I would stock up on a lot of bedbug repellent if I were you

It's statements like this that set civil rights back 50 years. Think (don't drink) before you type

Bedbugs are found all over the world and are very prevalent in US hotels, no matter what demographic the clientel is....and trust me...Americans are not known worldwide for their great hygiene, it's nothing to brag about

Actually alot of them have been. Europe is having a major outbreak as well. While travelling in Europe last month they had mentioned that. Its all over the US as well.

What!!! They got to Europe, too  Damn Americans must have brought them over. Europeans should be more discriminating of who they allow into their countries!

Instead of arguing where bed bugs come from,.. no one has answered the real question...
If this was a problem did Disney fix it since the guests that had them stayed at CBR

Helpful hint if you do get bitten by bedbugs on vacation - when you unpack, leave your suitcase OUTSIDE the house and bring clothes in and wash in hottest water possible. They are prone to "hitch" a ride in your clothes and suitcase and you could bring them home. :hurl: Personally, I try to bring home better souleniers!:ROFLOL:

That's good advice. My suggestion to anyone (especially those worried about bed bugs would be to Google "bed bugs". There's a lot of good sites that will give you the facts and tell how to prevent getting them during travel.

Some tips I've read included;

- don't put your suitcases on the floor or the bed! Immediately lay them on a chair, table, luggage stand, etc. (farther away from the bed is better).

- It's better to pack your clothes away in the drawers than to leave your clothes in an open suitcase. After you unpack, zip up luggage and leave it off the floor if possible.

- Avoid putting clothes in or near the bedside table. Bed bugs can be anywhere in the hotel room but they do hang out close to the bed. They like darkness and they like warm humans!!!

- If you think your hotel room has bed bugs call management immediately. Don't take matters in your own hands and spray them with a bug spray or disinfectant spray - this will only cause them to move and make it harder for the "professionals" to find them.

Now, have a nice vacation!

You should not report these things when in fact this is not true.A disney lawyer should contact you shortly. There was no report of this in the hotel log?

It has nothing to do with how clean or unclean you are. Bedbugs are not roaches, they don't eat garbage, they drink blood. As long as you have blood in your body you are in equal opportunity meal in the eyes of a bedbug.

The real reason for the spread of bed bugs has to do with treatment options. It's a double edged sword. In the interest of public safety, we have banned the harsh poisions that used to be available as insect controll methods. Thats all well and good, they were very harsh. However, now it's a lot harder to contoll infestation. Bedbugs are notoriously difficult to kill, especially with whats available as pest control now.

They also hitch rides and migrate quite easily, thats why they spread. It could Disney, it could be Hyatt, it could be Motel 6, it could be the Hot Sheet Special. They all can get bed bugs. However, I am quite frankly suprized at WDW Management's lack of some sort of compensation offer.

Bed bugs like cracks and crevices. If you want to check, look along the headboard where it meets the wall, also along the edge of the mattress, where the rolled edge is. Look for little black dots - thats bed bug ________. Spraying the place with lysol or any other contact diseinfectant will not help. The bed bugs are hiding, the lysol will not get to them. It's when there is a quite, warm, body laying there that they come out.

As far as staying in SSR - thats most likely now the most bed bug free resort. As a problem has been identified and now its been treated :)

Good advice Dave, is it also possible to find out right away by looking under the mattress when you first get into the room upon check-in?

That is the tip I had heard once upon a time...
