Horizons 94 question?

Well you said it the pre show not the ride. IMO MS dosen't hold a candle to Horizons. ANd people claimed Horizons isn't popular MS never has a wait above 4o minutes. IN that regard MS is a complete joke. The bussiest day of the year New Years eve I was in the park Soarin 360 min wait TT was almost the same MS 5 minutes till noon and the ride never went over 35 on the busiest day of the year.

The ride is pretty damn good too, it just made me dizzy as hell.:lookaroun:lol:

Only thing really wrong with M:S is that you see the mech as you go in, and the unthemed post show.

And the fact that it sits on top of Horizons, but it's not it's fault.

 Horizons wasn't a pavilion, either. It was a building with a ride. Same as M:S. Both are single.

And for the record, I think M:S queue's and preshow vids are perfect. Very immersive.

Could have been an accent to Horizons but it just part of the dumbing down of EC imo

There's nothing "dumb" in M:S. I don't understand this....It's a VERY life like, realistic, science based view of the the future (though highly specific...which I think is the new direction for EPCOT now, rather than broad and sweeping...which might be a good thing.) of Space Travel. There's no cartoon tie in. There's no gimmick. There's no real lapse of theme and presentation of entertainment. It's a great fit.

But yes, it would have been the perfect accent to Horizons...they could have made the whole thing about Space.

Or FW West.

I dunno to replace Horizons with a simulator that spins, that is what MS is a simulator that spins seems like a bad choice to me.

I think the mission: space building is fantastic. The execution as a centrifuge ride system and the "training simulator" concept isn't. That's just my opinion and it has nothing to do with Horizons. I was excited about M:S when it opened. It was just a big let down for me.

Maybe if it was a Sum Of All Thrills type system with an actual mission to mars it would have been better.

Have you been on the ride?:ROFLOL:

"Simulator that spins" is not the way to describe it- and I knew that before I even stepped into the capsule itself! The ride feels REAL. You feel like you are flying.

A little too much, IMHO, I don't see myself doing that again in the near future.:lookaroun Green, sure.

I wonder...if they bridged the gap between simulator to actual spaceflight better with new visuals, if it would be a better experience.

Absolutely. There's actually a lot of small stuff, even story wise, they could do to make it better. The part Eddie talked about that didn't get in (when I think it was supposed to be a real trip to Mars) with the craft breaking down, the window freezing up and the astronaut outside the ship shining a flashlight into the craft would have been killer.

You know what..? All possible. It's all screens, and it all could be added in. I seriously hope they have plans to refurbish it. It's been about 7 years already.

I'll add (and not the Imagineers fault):

I hate that they intentionally took the "easy" way out to cheapen the cost and experience. Making this a "training mission" so they could justify:
  • leaving "backstage" elements visible
  • have no post-show to speak of (don't have to explain how you went to Mars and all of a sudden are back on Earth
  • make it feel similar to almost any other thrill ride concept across the theme park world
That being said, I still think the technology and abilities of the mechanism itself are amazing. It is the most real flight simulation you'll find in a publc venue like this. So, while I don't do it because I get sick, the actual 5 minute ride is quite well done. Overall, M:S is more than just the 5 minute ride and on a whole I feel fails.

You've said this before, and it's just simply not true. At all.

As someone who worked in the area for an amount of time, M:S is a popular attraction.

And I was there this past Christmas/New Years. M:S Orange had a 120 minute wait, and Green had a wait of 75.

Exactly!:sohappy:

Sure, that would have been great, but it didn't happen. No reason to bash a good ride.

Good lord, if I was the engineers that designed that wonderful piece of machinery I'd feel like you just kicked me in the crotch. That thing is one of the most sophisticated ride vehicle/system on the face of the earth.

Calling it a "simulator that spins" is an insult.

I'm not a huge fan of Mission: Space, but I have to admit that it is growing on me... The reason why the inside of the bays is not themed is because it's not really possible. The way the ride system is set up is such that anything that can move can cause the ride to stop. The spinning centrifuge could easily cause anything on the walls to come off, thus creating problems. That's also why the whole space flight training storyline is in place. Imagineering knew people wouldn't be too happy with the fact that the ride chamber was unthemed, so by using the training storyline, they could sorta justify it. I still think the unthemed super long hallway at the end could use some sproosing up, but other than that the on stage areas of the attraction is pretty well themed.

One of the reasons why it doesn't have a line too often is that if all four bays are running with no problems, it loads pretty fast. Every 5 minutes roughly 40 people can enter the ready room of each of the four bays, followed by the pre-flight pre-show and the ride itself. The times when it has a really long line are usually when one of the bays is down for some reason or another and it just gets backed up.

We finally agree.

And yes, BOTH Horizons and M:S were great rides. Shame they don't coexist.

Perfectly not true. They would not let it operate, if that were the case....It's engineering is sound.

I think that's the problem. As a stand alone ride it's okay. But if it had another ride, whether Horizons or another omnimover ride that enhanced the storyline of really being in space like what was proposed to begin with, people would have a different view of it. I don't think it would change any opinions for the people who hate it, but it would for the people who are more, "Meh" and "I miss Horizons" about it.
