My theory is people like audio animatronics. It's one of the few things Disney has that you can't get at any other theme parks. You remove one (or more) from the parks and people are going to get justifiably upset and want it back - that pretty much applies across the board for all attractions with AAs. You wouldn't see this volume of complaints if the magic carpet spinner (or even Autopia) disappeared.
If I might expand on that a bit, people should appreciate from Disney attractions and experiences which you just can't find anywhere else - and AA rich dark/omnimover rides like Horizons, Spaceship Earth, Haunted Mansion, and the Carousel of Progress are central to the concept. On the other hand, you can get thrill rides - often more extreme than anything in WDW - at any amusement park. Certainly other parks have AA's or similar experiences, but rarely (especially until recently) did they approach the scale of Disney-quality attractions. You won't find anything quite like Mission Space in those other parks either, but the 'thrill' factor of such attractions is commonly replicated, and in a (Walt Disney) "World" of more sedate attractions, Mission Space is the 'odd element' which doesn't belong in the set (or in Epcot).
