Going the Distance... From Mile 1 to 26.2: A Marathon Weekend 2009 Trip Report

So it’s been four weeks since my boyfriend, Brett (27), and I (26) accomplished a goal we’d only dreamed about in the months leading up to our January 2009 trip… we finished the Walt Disney World Marathon :sohappy:!!!

For those of you who have read either of my first two (extremely long-winded) trip reports you are probably quite aware of Brett and I’s love for the Disney characters. And it might not shock you too much that our original motivation for tackling the miles was the thought of getting to meet all the rare characters found only on the race… that’s right, you read that correctly, we are two crazy people (non runners at that) who were willing to endure 26.2 miles of hell to meet a few characters. And since we’re talking about the underworld and all, I guess I should give Hades some credit as a motivator; he was our most sought after character (ever since we saw a picture of him high fiving finishers), especially for Brett!

To set the stage for this weekend, I should start at the beginning. A little over a year ago (December 2007), Brett and I set a goal to become more active, a new year’s resolution if you will, but we didn’t call it that. We started looking into Disney’s Endurance Series (because of the aforementioned characters) and decided that a half marathon (13.1 miles) was a manageable goal. February through May was spent teaching my body how to run, or rather jog. Seriously, in the beginning I couldn’t run one mile at a 12 minute pace without feeling like I was going to fall off the treadmill and die.

Once we made it over that hurdle we decided to go online and register for the event. Little did we know, the half marathon was already full and registration had closed! This was a huge dilemma. We had already set our sights on being a part of Marathon Weekend 2009 and we didn’t want to let it go. And that was when we started thinking marathon. I contacted my cousin for some advice. She and her husband are Ironman triathletes and she told me the distance was totally doable and she put together a marathon training schedule for us. For those of you unfamiliar with what an Ironman triathlon is, let me just tell you… it’s a beast. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and it wraps up with a 26.2 mile run. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy!

So we posted the run schedule and a copy of the course map on a bulletin board in the kitchen and began checking off the days. We also used a thumbtack to mark our journey along the map. I spent months visualizing this course, and during earlier WDW trips this past year in May, September, and December I thought about the miles we would cover while we were driving down the roads we would one day be traveling on foot.

We started out closely following the schedule until life and ITB knee pain got in the way. Okay, if I’m being honest some laziness and feelings of “I don’t want to run today, I’ll do it tomorrow” got in the way as well. Fast forward to the week before the marathon and our longest runs had only amounted to ten miles…. we were in trouble and very undertrained, but never did we consider backing out. Granted that might just show quite a bit of stupidity and stubbornness on our part :brick:!

And don't worry, the upcoming posts will include pictures!

Wow! Getting to be Grand Marshals in the parade! That is like the ultimate reward for finishing the marathon. (Not that it would'nt have been totally awsome any other time either ;))

Awsome trip report. Loved it!

As for Mickey's Jammin Jungle parade, I was sooooooo excited. And it didn't disappoint. We have been very lucky on each of our past 4 trips.

Awesome! I never thought what a fun experience being a GM of the parade would be. Totally fun and different than simply watching. I bet it was so fun following along watching the characters and dancers do their thing. I love the PhotoPass pics too!

So what other "lucky" things have happened on your other trips?

wow, grand marshall of the parade. that is so exciting. oh no, you can't leave yet, go back and write some more!

Wow, that's awsome you were picked to be in MJJP!!:sohappy:

Oh wow! They couldn't have picked better Grand Marshals for a parade with your character lovin' and wearin' the medals and all. Y'all are awesome. The expressions in the pics are great. You did a fantastic job! Yaaaaayyyyy!!!!

Thank you everyone! We were both so excited to have the opportunity to be in that parade. One thing I learned while we were up there on that float was that anytime I watch a parade in the future I'm going to do my best to catch the eye of the grand marshalls... I was so appreciative of the people who waved back. At times I felt like a crazy person waving off into the distance!

So what other "lucky" things have happened on your other trips?

Watching the entertainers in front of us really was great. As for the other lucky things... we won something for the YOAMD on each of the three trips prior to this one.

In December we won AK dream fastpasses when exiting Everest and then later during the trip we (well, Brett) won us a "Lights, Motor, Action" Tailgate party! During our September trip we won dream ears on Goofy's Barnstormer. The best though, was back in May of this year... we were at the MK on our last day and when we got off the Haunted Mansion there were dream squad members handing out "double dreams" in the exit queue: dream ears and dream fastpasses. We of course decided to use them all before leaving that day and as we exited BTMRR we won entry to an "MK dream time event" that evening (which was basically a special EMH). Of course, not knowing what it was, we checked back in and stayed another night :sohappy:!

Funny thing is, before 2008, neither one of us had ever "won" a thing. I guess it was just a great year! We just happened to be in the right place at the right time a lot.

Day 4, Tuesday January 13, 2009: DHS/Travel Home

We woke up early on Tuesday and packed up our stuff. This trip had been way too short and we weren’t ready to leave, but hey, that’s life, right?! We headed over to the registration building to check out and check our suitcases with luggage services. Next up was of course Boatwright’s!! Just like the day before, we were ready to bang our forks and knives on the table in anticipation of that delicious French toast. Presently, I’m mourning the loss of my favorite Disney food item, but at the time we had no clue they were planning on scrapping the breakfast at Boatwright’s. If I’d known I really might have cried that morning, in addition to ordering extra, of course!

We finished breakfast and decided to head over to the Studios, even if it was just for an hour. We wanted to soak up as much magic as possible before getting on that dreaded bus back to the airport. We made it in time to catch the rope drop show. I love the streetmosphere.

Leroy Smalls, Talent Agent Extraordinaire:

Alberto Dante… the famous director of In The Can Productions:

We took our time as the mob rushed towards Toy Story Midway Mania. We were headed in that direction but decided to stop for a few photo ops with characters because their lines were non-existent and I wanted to have some character pictures with us in our marathon tech shirts for my marathon scrapbook.

We came across the ladies (I love that they do meet and greets together now):

P1130155.jpg

I love this picture of Goofy and Brett:

P1130157.jpg

And of course, I couldn’t pass up Pluto:

P1130162.jpg

Donald Duck informed us that we were wearing the wrong shirt… maybe next year we’ll have his instead:

P1130165.jpg

And my very favorite post-race character interaction goes to the chipmunks. They fawned all over me after they saw my shirt and then when Brett joined us for a picture they put us into a “runner’s pose.” It was kind of painful, but hey, no pain no gain, right? That’s certainly the message I came to appreciate over the course of the weekend. I love this picture:

P1130161.jpg

After quickly meeting up with all the characters we headed over to Pixar Place to find that the standby line for TSMM was 45 minutes or so, and we really didn’t want to risk making it back to the resort. Plus, I wasn’t thinking about it at the time, but there’s a serious up one side and down the other stairwell in that queue… No Thank You!

Instead, we wandered around Hollywood and Sunset, browsed the shops and kept our eyes peeled for the Citizens of Hollywood. We grabbed some last minute goodies from the Scary Apothecary and then decided that as much as we hated to do it… it was time to leave. On the way out we had a photopass photographer take our picture in front of the hat; too bad the crane’s in view, or this would have been a decent picture (especially considering it’s one we rarely take). Funny how it wasn't up for opening, but it was up shortly thereafter:

P1130168.jpg

Oh the woes of leaving. We sadly left the park behind and caught a bus back to Port Orleans Riverside. I was missing our car at this point, because we usually stretch out that last day well into the afternoon and then make a late drive home. For some reason though, I don’t think the plane would have waited on us!

At the resort we grabbed a snack and sat down at one of the tables outside near the water. It was so peaceful and relaxing; I didn’t want to leave. Reality was starting to sink in. This was the first time in quite awhile that we would be leaving WDW behind, not already knowing exactly when our next trip would be… and you know… that sure makes it harder.

A feathered friend relaxing and enjoying the view with us:

P1130176.jpg

It was time to go, so we rounded up our luggage and headed to the DME check in counter. Again, with regards to DME, I wasn’t all too impressed with the organization of things. There was a gentleman walking through the line and asking who everyone was flying with. If you were checking bags (with certain airlines) he would jot down a phone number for you to call and pay over the phone. Now, I’m not one that really freaks out about identity theft and whatnot, but this process really left me with an uneasy feeling. There has to be a better way to do it.

The DME bus: for obvious reasons, it’s not the best sight to behold. But there are some additional things that are quite daunting about the thing… think about it. That’s right… those wretched steps. Ack!

P1130170.jpg

We made it onto the bus and were off. And so it goes… Marathon weekend 2009 had officially come to a close. It was all that I had hoped for and more. What did we discuss on the way home, you ask? Why Marathon Weekend 2010 of course, and all the trips we’d like to take between now and then!!!

Awesome trip report, again! You're right, the pic of Brett with Goofy is awesome. My fav was y'all with the chipmunks doing the running poses. That's the best!

I've been meaning to ask how much running you've done since the marathon weekend and were you really going back for 2010? My cousin's wife out in California just had seriously preemie twins in December. When she found out she was preggers she was training for the upcoming Princess Half Marathon. I talked to her over the weekend and now that the babies are nearing their homecoming she's wanting to start training again. Me, too! So we're both going to get busy and shoot for doing the Princess Half together in 2010. That's the goal! So thank you for the inspiration. I never would've thought seriously of it until I read your trip report. It sounded like such an awesome journey. A girl can't help but feel the urge to throw herself out there, rise to the challenge, and go for it!

Until your next report....or mine....LOL!

fantastic report hollybelle!

all your pics are awesome. the one in front of the hat with the crane in it could be photoshopped to get rid of it, it doesn't look like it would be too hard.

That was a really great trip report! I loved all the pictures and details. My hubby loves to run...so maybe I can talk him into doing the marathon (I of course would have to get into shape for that sort of thing). Can't wait to see your next trip report :)

I know I've commented several times on your TR, but just wanted to tell you one last time, I enjoyed it so much! Thanks for inspiring so many of us. I am a runner but haven't ever done more than a 10K. I've always wanted to do a half, and after seeing how fun it is at WDW, I'm hoping to get my Donald Duck medal in 2010!

I also love the pose with the Chipmunks, they're such characters!

Take care until next time!

Thanks, Kelly! I pm'd you with that info; hope it helps! I'm so excited you're going to do this! You have to write a "race report" for us all :D.

See you in '10!

We'll get that pic with Hades next year! :D

Oh I sure hope so! See you then.

fantastic report hollybelle!

Thanks, Louella!! I should try that, because otherwise it's not a bad picture.

Thanks, Joanna! Maybe we'll see you out there. I think the half is going to be the perfect distance (or at least one that doesn't cause me to walk funny for three weeks)!

Last thoughts: Marathon Favorites/Little things

-The back of my favorite marathon participant tshirt said “3 months ago this was a great idea.”
-Most controversial thing I saw was a “Baby on Board” sign on a young lady’s back.
-My favorite spectator sign: “You’re all Kenyans on the inside” (this couldn’t have come at a better time, which was when we were shuffling along the boardwalk around mile 24).
-My favorite park to run through was probably the MK, which barely beat out the early morning trip through Epcot (Brett’s favorite).
-Favorite backstage area we got to run through: exiting the MK (loved all the jungle cruise hippos and splash mountain logs just hanging out)
-My favorite character moment; oh so tough…I think, even though we’d already met him, seeing Darkwing wins because he really was like a ray of light beckoning me forward
-The rarest character award (in my opinion) probably has to go to Colonial Donald Duck
-The most unexpected character on the course was maybe Eric.
-Most painful thing ever… bus stairs!!
-Most unDisneylike moment for me: No Doubt’s “Hella Good” blaring in Epcot.
-Most disappointing part for me was, as you are all already aware, the lack in characters (rare or other) at the Studios
-What I was most thankful for throughout the course of the race: Volunteers and Spectators! They’re the reason I finished.
-Lowest low: Bear Island Road and the Studios.
-Highest high: crossing that finish line, of course :sohappy:!

Reflections:

This was our first stay at Port Orleans Riverside and I really enjoyed it. I liked the grounds a lot but the room décor is just okay. We’re trying to check off all the resorts and I’m so glad we caught this one when Boatwright’s was still serving breakfast. That being said, I’m not taking the loss of Boatwright’s breakfast very well :(.

With regards to the marathon, I’m so incredibly glad that we took on the challenge. The feelings of accomplishment and excitement really can’t be described, they have to be felt. It’s also very cool to know that we’ve achieved something a very small percentage of people (something like 1-2%) will ever do. I knew going in that we were undertrained, and that was nobody's fault but our own. I couldn't pin it on anyone but myself if I didn't finish, and knowing that was what helped me find the determination to get to the end. That being said, I know for a fact that I could not have done it alone; having Brett with me every step of the way made it possible. I was also really prepared for the course, I had visualized it (and myself finishing it) so many times and I know that helped. I couldn’t have been more proud of our 7 hour finish time… we’d met our goal, which was simply to finish. That being said, never again will I run/walk a marathon being so undertrained :lookaroun. It was my own fault, but next time I’ll be sure that doesn’t happen.

Being the grand marshalls in Mickey’s Jammin Jungle parade was such a fun experience! I was so thankful for the opportunity. It was certainly a great way to “celebrate” our marathon finish. Speaking of celebrations, I’m looking forward to seeing more of the 2009 theme on future trips. Even though it was January and a new year, the YOAMD paraphernalia was still prominent throughout the parks.

And lastly, I just really want to thank everyone for reading and getting involved in our marathon experience :D. It's been so fun to journal and share with you all If I can possibly answer any questions regarding the weekend or races, please please PM me and let me know!

I’ll leave you with a fun little thought for any of you wondering how hard it is to get back out there after recovering from 26.2 miles… I haven’t put on those marathon shoes since taking them off Sunday, January 11, 2009 !!! Although we do plan to start taking some leisurely runs here soon!

Thanks, Courtfran! Are you going to write a race report?! I would love to hear all about the Princess half, especially since this was it's inaugural year. I was looking at some pictures of the event last week and Brett and I would love to do it (mainly for all the great rare characters). I'm aware that some guys participated and they aren't actually banned, even though it's geared towards females; although, I doubt he'd be so fond of the "Princess Brett" title they might bestow upon him (or the tiara medal for that matter)!!

I've been working on my trip report. When it's done it will be posted on my blog. http://runcourtrun.blogspot.com

Feel free to check it out. The men's race numbers only said their first name and left out princess. But you still have the chance of having a pink number. lol And of course you get a tiara medal. But hey a medal is a medal.

Oooh I'm so excited to read your race report. Congratulations on finishing! Just seeing your first post got me all excited and took me back to the thrill of the race. I'll check back frequently for updates.

And as for Brett... a pink bib wouldn't bother him in the least. He's rather secure in his manhood and has no shame . I think he'll probably do anything for character meet and greets!
