Disney(World) vs. Disney(land)?

I have stayed at the Ritz Grande Lakes for $199 a night a few summers back (would have to check the year ... maybe five now). People were paying almost that for a motel room at Port Orleans.

And I regularly stay at great 4-star resorts in O-Town for less than the discounted rates at Disney's moderate and value resorts. It can be done. Really!

Motel room? Do you know anything about hotel rooms?

If uni was smart, they'd run a MASSIVE marketing campaign offering some sort of huge benefit to visitors staying in Orlando using DVC points.

Maybe give them free express passes when 3 day tickets are bought, or offer heavily discounted ticket pricing on 3 days or more. They could get inventive. Make those DVC people feel like they've GOT to spend multiple days at their property and maybe even skip Disney's parks all together.

i think that is a fascinating idea and while I never offer business ideas to companies online that I could earn a paycheck for doing so, I'll say if I were a UNI/Comcast Exec I'd be doing this ASAP.

Hell, maybe offer like a 30-40% discount for DVCers on APs purchased. This would be a HUGE shot at Disney and could be very successful on so many levels.

Disney really ain't going to be happy if someone stays a week in a one bedroom 'they own' at the BW, but doesn't go in the parks or buy its overpriced grub.

Genius, really!

EDIT: Saw your other post suggesting the AP offer after posting this. Again, GREAT idea.

Not one of those examples are comparable, they are not actively going to rivals select users and saying while using their products you get a special products from us.

Oh please. Amex curries favor with comparable cardholders at various levels, and trade-ins can be anything from a Ford Focus to a Maserati. It's all a matter of scale. And neither Disney nor Universal are below such tactics for the tourist dollars. Sorry, but TWDC needs to step up its product in Florida, or such a move by Universal would be quite successful.

I was saying that if you took Iger at face value today, you could easily make an argument that nothing is coming to WDW for years ... DL too.

I know that isn't true. But many folks believe that people like Iger never lie, let alone to media and Wall Street analysts.

I know Disney has finally realized it is in a war. They figured this out only years too late, but at least they understand that Cindy's Pleasure Palace is under siege.

So was every other division just 6 years ago. Even by some internal forces. WDW was the one division Iger knew could hold the line while he fixed everything else. Strategy worked amazingly. Now they have fixed WDW's infrastructure and added enough on-site hotels to handle the crowds that will return in the near future.

You are correct in this aspect, Iger and other CEOs lie to analysts

Generally speaking rises in profit shows growth
Generally speaking yes. But in the context of a general discussion of WDW, where we have constant positions that multiple areas of customer experience is cut, cheapened, or removed completely, and we have price increases with a relatively stagnant head count, your profit is not a sign of growth, but a sign of a reactionary leadership team that is so focused on the right now that they are blinded from seeing what tomorrow is going to be. Based on the OP, those blinders may be lifting.

A motel room traditionally has room doors that open directly to the outside world, like Port Orleans.

A hotel has room doors that open to the interior of the hotel itself.

That is not the only defining qualifications to be considered a motel or hotel. Look at resorts around the world like in Fiji where the rooms open up to an outside location, they are not considered motels are they? The first letter in Motel should tell you everything you need to know about it, M like in Motor meaning a car or truck

It is completely reasonable for a place that old.to.have stagnant attendance growth. It us unrealistic to expect double digit growth every year. Universal is having double digit growth for it to get back to it's starting position

That's why they pay me the big bucks, 74. What can I say. :)

If uni smells blood in the water, they need to go for it. Make the impact. Put out a deal so good for DVCers that they just literally can't pass it up.

How about "buy a 3 day pass, get a ticket to blue man group free"? The possibilities are virtually endless.

Umm, profits increased too. Essentially the only thing not showing great growth is WDW and they are getting to that now. They had to fix the infrastructure and create enough accomadations for the future crowds.
I'll be very pleased when we start seeing improvements in WDW.

But WDW has been neglected for 10 years and there is a lot of work left to be done. The only infrastructure stuff they've done is NextGen related. But that could improve soon too. I'm hoping for transportation infrastructure, and that may be some where on the radar, though far down in the queue.

I assure you Uni does not want to get into a serious battle with the mouse.

But if they are that dumb, well we would all be the winners.

I'm guessing you don't own any businesses.

I own 4 multi-million dollar companies. Call it what you will, but it happens, and it happens increasingly often. Especially in this economy.

If uni smells blood in the water, especially after hearing the earnings report today, I wouldn't be surprised to see something exactly like I'm suggesting.

There are a HUGE number of dissatisfied DVC owners right now that are wondering what's going to keep their interest in 40 more years of vacations to Orlando. Why not appeal directly to them?

I just wanted to mention here that we did do the DVC tour a few times, almost pulled the trigger more than once, and probly could've paid for a nice chunk of points more than once. That said, in the last year I can honestly say I thank my lucky stars we did NOT buy in. Do you have any idea how totally ed I'd be if I had bought in then had the declining quality with higher cost to look forward to???? Ugh! Thaaaaank God!
