American Idol: Season 7!!

True, but once it gets down to the final 3, VFTW loses a lot of its clout don't you think?
Oh, absolutely. Frankly, I feel their clout starts to really die off around 6-7 left. There's no denying that.

Overmyer (sp) was the first of the 12, then it was Kristy Lee Cook (I forgot her)from 10-7, then Brook at 6-5. Castro at 4.
My previous post was wrong, and though I could make arguments about overall mediocrity making it difficult to pick a true worster... I won't stand by it because I don't choose the Worsters. Sanjaya was a true "Worster Victory," but even their influence in that is overplayed.

I don't think they make a difference, but I think their funny.

I agree with that last statement, Jeff. Some of their write-ups are hilarious!

Rich (of Big & Rich) is blasting Idol as being scripted.
I really wonder if it is. I notice that some of the contestants talk about the songs that they "picked" as songs that really didn't jump out at them or they didn't know them that well but they "chose" to sing them anyway. I take that to mean someone else picked the songs for them...

Archuleta is the new VFTW pick.

Scripted? What part? Paula's embarrassing comments?

Or is he just bitter that "Gone Country" was so bad?:D

:ROFLOL:

If it's scripted, I'm not surprised at all. The show is way too polished. Somewhere in this thread is a link to an article about the goings-on behind the scenes. Pretty good reading :drevil:

The David A VFTW thing is interesting especially since so many people picked him to win right off the bat. But, if we look ahead to the types of albums each of the three will likely put out, his will probably appeal to the smallest audience.

Is it wrong I enjoyed "Gone Country" but thought he was TOTALLY wrong in who he picked to win?! When he announced the winner of that show I was like WHAT THE?!

I don't know about this. I think if they skew David A. towards the teeny bopper area, I think they could do a great job with him. There really is no male teeny bopper around right now...Miley being the female and the Jonas Brothers being the group...although they are male, but that's a different story...I think, given the right music, he could turn out to be huge in that world. And teeny boppers spend what money they have on music and on any paraphanaila (sp?) that has that person on it. I know...I was such a person when all the boy bands were out. If it had Justin Timberlake on it...I bought it.

All I'm saying, is that with the right everything, David A. could have an outstanding career.

I agree Nibs. I've thought from the beginning that David A. could have a good career with Disney, either doing voice-over work for movies or on Disney Channel, but I don't think he would have universal appeal.

Did you all read the article about how his Dad has been banned from helping him prepare for shows? Apparently AI got in some deep doodoo because David changed some of the lyrics in Stand By Me, at his Dad's insistence, despite being warned by AI that he could not do that. AI incurred a lot of attorney's fees for it.

Bye Bye crazy stage dad!

While David A certainly isn't who is getting my votes, I agree with this to an extent. I think he could have an outstanding career-but I don't see any longevity. Anyone who is directed towards the "tween" crowd eventually fades out-one day, Miley Cyrus will be another "who?" much like the Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, and Tommy Page's of my day. Granted, I know Debbie (sorry, Deborah) Gibson has gone on to do broadway, etc...but she isn't selling records like in her prime. Anytime you're promoted in this genre, your life span isn't long-because those kids grow up and the new "tweens" want someone new. I think that David C and Syesha are more universally appealing, if nothing else because they'll hit more of an adult audience.

And while we're talking about Miley-am I the only one who thought the Vanity Fair photos were pretty tame? Why is she apologizing for showing her bare back??? She'd be showing just as much in a bikini on the beach, what's the big damn deal? People put way too much pressure on that girl to be perfect. Anyhoo.

Well, I guess then my examples are the exception, not the rule....but teeny boppers can still have some success if they reinvent themselves. Madonna was one of the people I thought about...although I wouldn't have necessarily called her a teeny bopper. Another example...Mariah Carey. After the whole going crazy thing, she's still on top. The other is Justin Timberlake. And he's one who's longevity is still going. It's been 10 years now since he first stepped out with NSYNC and he's still popular as ever.

As I said, it's more the exception than the rule...however, it can be done...you just need to have the penchant for reinvention. And with that...I can see that David A. might not have that. (Or he might...only time will tell).

And if we're talking about singers having a shelf life...even people that are older that come out usually go bye bye really quickly now a days. The shelf life of a singer is quite small recently. They get out a few hits and then usually, go away. It's the fickle way the industry has been going. It seems the only real place you can have any kind of longevity in music is in the country music industry. That area seems to be a lot less fickle (at least right now) in regards to people sticking around for a long time.

If he goes teenybopper, you are absolutely right, huge career potential (although as others have said... perhaps shorter lived). I just have a feeling he would steer more towards the inspirational/religious type songs once he got past his initial Idol album.

I think Archueleta's big money will come from the tell-all book he writes when he gets out of therapy when he's in his 40s. But he will have a big enough career first so that a publisher would be interested in the book.

I guess my thought is he won Star Search and couldn't make it big and now he's trying American Idol...
