What do you guys think of this?

I just see this as a way to turn Satellite radio into a monopoly and have no competition so the rates can just skyrocket.

Also, I foresee this becoming like cable...every "group" of stations are going to cost additional fees like movie channels and sports packages on cable and satellite TV.

This is not a good thing for satellite customers. Yes, you'll have access to more programming, but for more money.

The FAQ section on XM's site asks the question: Will prices increase?...and they tiptoed around it very blatantly.

They should give everybody a free trial once this gets up and running to allow their subscribers to see what they're paying for before actually paying for it.

Why pay for something when you can get the same thing (I could care less about the extras) on regular AM/FM for free??? :confused: :shrug: Besides, I like my local stations/programs much better than the national ones... except Loveline. That one cracks me up!!!

My take on the whole thing...

When the SDARS licenses were issued by the FCC back in 1997, the language built into those licenses were that there would be no monopoly, EVER! Hence why the FCC issued two licenses for SatRad... NOT ONE!

Either way... even if the FCC does bend their rules and let this happen... it still has to be approved by the DoJ (Dept of Justice). Honestly... I don’t see it happening. Anyone remember what happened with the DirecTV and DishNetwork deal last year?? The DoJ shot it down siting anti-trust, and said there needed to be competition. They did not allow that monopoly.

If it does somehow manage to eek thru the DoJ, and the deal goes thru... then someone has to surrender their license. One company cannot run on both licenses. They can’t do that. So that being said... there will be an open SatRad license. It would be nice if someone with the cash and resources does pick it up and start another service. Would that happen? I don’t know... it looks bleak. It would be nice... just to keep things competitive.

The "commercial-free" music is nice (I put that in parenthesis because it's not TOTALLY commercial-free). I will admit that there are far better stations on satellite radio than the normal terrestrial radio stations (even here in Boston which has pretty decent stations).

Also, on top of the music...don't forget about the sports and comedy stations!

The channels in the low 20's on XM's dial are all Clear Channel stations. Clear Channel forced those commericals... and XM tried to fight it in court. So,.... big deal... its a few stations. But XM went and created a few commerical free stations just like those Clear Channel supplied stations :)

And if you are worried about commericals now... wait till the merger is done (if it happens). Dont forget... Mel Karm was CBS /Infinity Broadcasting for a long time. Mel likes commericals... lol.

As a side note... the only thing I am really looking forward to.... content wise... from this merger... is
"Radio Margaritaville".

I have contemplated getting a Sirius Receiver along side my XM receiver... JUST to have that station in my car. :lol: :o I want Sirius Channel 31!!

LOL the Promos for that show are all I need. :lol:

He has some pretty off beat themes to... so just the promos themselves are pretty entertaining.

If he says "e-mail bucket" one more time though, I am gonna smash the bucket over his head. :lol: :p :p

What difference does it make? All he said was that if he wanted better songs, he'd record a CD or use his iPod in the car. Even if you swear by XM, there's no arguing that you can literally put anything you want music-wise on an iPod.

Why is this an argument? :confused:

It's not really an argument.

I dunno, to each his own I guess.

I, for one, know that I can put any music I want onto a cd or an iPOD...but...to do it legally would actually cost MORE than it would to just subscribe to XM or Sirius. Plus...I like the fact that at any given time during the day I can hear a song that I may have completely forgot about and would NEVER think to put it on a cd or an iPOD.

It's $.99 to download a song and roughly $12.00 to buy a cd...and it's $13.00 a month for XM or Sirius...
