My Mom made them, we just called them stuffed cabbage - me likey lots!!!! :D

Stuffed cabbage and halushkas are a different - the way we make them. Stuffed cabbage is basically ground beef and rice rolled in a cabbage leaf and baked in tomato sauce. Halushkas are shredded cabbage and onions sautéed until they are soft with these little dumplings mixed in. Granted both recipes are passed down from my grandma so what SHE called them and what general society called them could be two entirely different things.

I found many versions of halushkas (also haluski) online - some with bacon (YUM) - but this is what my grandma's looked like:

Thanks for posting the pictures - that helped a lot!!! I had googled halushkas and it came up with a recipe that was basically stuffed cabbage! I haven't had the halushkas that you showed, but it looks like it would be VERY tasty! Now I'm going to go crazy trying to find a place that serves it!!! :)

This recipe sounds like it would taste like what my grandma made - it doesn't seem that hard and it would probably be really good if you make the cabbage in a slow cooker and add the dumplings before you are ready to eat.

CABBAGE AND POLISH EGG DUMPLING(Haluski)
1 stick plus 3 tbsp. butter
3/4 med. head cabbage
2 lg. onions

DUMPLINGS:
2 lg. eggs
1/2 c. cold water
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

Do not use plain salt, use Morton's Natures Seasons seasonings.

Melt butter in large skillet. Coarsely shred cabbage with a knife. Dice the onions. Add salt and pepper to season (use Morton Seasonings). Stir well with wooden spoon and cook covered over low heat stirring occasionally for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Add well drained egg dumplings and cook for 10-15 minutes stirring often.

Dumplings: Beat eggs and water. Combine flour, baking powder and salt. These should be light and delicate. Bring pot of water to boil. Drop small bits of batter into simmering water. When dumplings are done they will rise to top. Lift out with slotted spoon. Drain well. Do not cover pot at all.

Got my new phone in the mail today. It's huge. Bigger than my mom's phone, twice the size of my old phone, and bigger than my old phone. Also going to be a learning curve. From a Samsung with a much older OS to an HTC with the newest Android operating system.

I have also had to stop feuding with the banks, as I was running out of institutions.
Unlike you guys, we really only have the Big 5 (TD/Canada Trust, Royal, CIBC, Scotia, and BMo), as well as credit unions, and a handful of virtual banks.
I am always blown away when travelling in the States, by the sheer number of different banks y'all have.

I haven't used a standard bank in almost two decades. Credit Unions are the best. Pay the best rates, charge the lowest rates and are just good to deal with. No hidden charges and heck mine pays 2.5% interest just on the checking balance with no charges for checking. (not that anyone uses them anyway since the invention of Debit Cards.)
:greedy: <------ Always wanted an excuse to use that one!
