What's the deal with sweet tea?

Having some sweet tea now. I brew it here at home, and being someone who lived in the south for many MANY years, I love it. In Cali, the tea is just blah at most restaurants....and yes, I usually add sweet and low to even my sweet tea.......I tried some from McDonalds just the other day...it was not nearly cold enough, and when I asked for some sweetener, the guy said no, I didnt need it, its already sweet:hammer:

But that makes it "sweetened" as you are adding the sugar AFTER it's been brewed. Real sweet tea is made with a sugar syrup not plain water like regular tea (hot or cold).

I almost died the first time I tasted it (was served by mistake) as I use no sugar or sweetener at all :hurl::hurl:

I had the same experience- I didn't realize what I was ordering at an IHOP in Orlando. I think I had cravings for insulin the rest of the day, and I'm not even diabetic.

I remember when I went to school in Indianapolis (2003-ish) that McAlister's Deli promoted sweet tea. It was pretty big there for a while, but seemed to fizzle...
The McAlister's Deli still serves it here (Texas). Kinda funny thing about getting tea in the south, if you ask if the tea is sweet they look at you like you're crazy or something. I am "from" the north but being in the military has made me a southerner and I love it, sweet tea and all!!!

Also, a thing about coke in Texas. If you order a "coke" in Central Texas they either ask what kind or just bring you a Dr Pepper. Coke referring to soda or pop in general. Strange local customs I guess.

My wife and I were joking that instead of a blood transfusion they get sweet tea transfusions in the south.

Anyone want to talk boiled peanuts? YUM!!! :slurp: :slurp: :slurp:

I'm from Florida (not really The South with a capital S), and I've hated sweet tea my entire life.

...Until this summer when I was working in Texas and magically realized how DELICIOUS it is!!!! I just had some today from Panera and it was literally ligquid sugar. A little TOO sweet for my liking, but nothing to deter me by any means.

I still love unsweet tea and hot tea (hot tea with sugar = no good :hurl:), but I'm just getting to love sweet tea. Sweet tea and tea with sugar are NOT the same thing, at all.

MMM.

I tried them a couple of times, and thought they were kind of bleh. Then, I had some fresh, homemade ones at a cook-out, and got hooked. Of course, you have to have the boiler, and make them outside. I made them once on the stove, and what a mistake THAT was.

Ohhh! I adore boiled peanuts I eat them at least once a week. I like mine Cajun style.

You can also try making them in a crockpot if you can't make them outside. Just boil your water and then add to the crockpot. I have done this before in the winter when I had a craving for them. They are not as good as in a big nice pot outside but okay for a small batch in the winter. :)

And on the Sweet Tea subject, Disneybird is right down here it is Sweet Tea and Coke or maybe an RC...:)

Over here you will hear "I want a cold drink" or give me a coke which also means soda in general here too.

Here in Alabama, all sodas are considered Coke as well. If you are asked if you'd like a Coke, you will also get asked "What kind".

Yes, definitely different. Also, keep in mind that sweet tea has no other flavor than just tea and sugar. Most of the sweet tea's I've had in the South actually taste more like sugar water than they do tea. I really can't drink pre-made/bottled/canned sweetened tea. I don't like the taaste of it. But true sweet tea, down here in Tennessee, is made with simply water, sugar and tea bags.

Is it 5:00 yet?
With so many people being diet-minded nowadays, I am surprised that McDonald's promotes sweet tea (extra large just $1!). It is even up on their outside billboard in my town. At least their tea is fresh brewed. The few McAllisters I have been into have promoted their fresh tea, but not sweetned. I guess they let you decide. Sweetner here with a slice of lemon.

They make the best sweet tea along with all the mexican restaurants around here!:slurp::slurp:

Those aren't REAL tea. They're fake stuff.

Real tea/Sweet Tea tastes much different than Arizona or Snapple. Even Arizona's self-proclaimed "Sweet Tea" tastes exactly like their normal stuff, which is NOT Sweet Tea.

In my opinion there is a huge difference between fresh brewed sweet tea and what you get pre-packaged say from Arizona brand or Snapple. Nothing beats fresh brewed sweet tea. :slurp: It's a personal choice, like most things in life. :)

I read the title of the thread and was expecting some Jerry Seinfeld observational humor.

That being said, I hate sweet tea...and sweetened tea. No sugar...no sweetness...I like it straight from the leaves :)
