But that makes it "sweetened" as you are adding the sugar AFTER it's been brewed. Real sweet tea is made with a sugar syrup not plain water like regular tea (hot or cold).
I almost died the first time I tasted it (was served by mistake) as I use no sugar or sweetener at all :hurl::hurl:
The McAlister's Deli still serves it here (Texas). Kinda funny thing about getting tea in the south, if you ask if the tea is sweet they look at you like you're crazy or something. I am "from" the north but being in the military has made me a southerner and I love it, sweet tea and all!!!I remember when I went to school in Indianapolis (2003-ish) that McAlister's Deli promoted sweet tea. It was pretty big there for a while, but seemed to fizzle...
I had the same experience- I didn't realize what I was ordering at an IHOP in Orlando. I think I had cravings for insulin the rest of the day, and I'm not even diabetic.
My kind of gal! :king:We always have simple syrup on hand for Mint Juleps & Mojitos, so it's easy to make "real" sweet tea.
Anyone want to talk boiled peanuts? YUM!!! :slurp: :slurp: :slurp:
Ohhh! I adore boiled peanuts I eat them at least once a week. I like mine Cajun style. The McAlister's Deli still serves it here (Texas). Also, a thing about coke in Texas. If you order a "coke" in Central Texas they either ask what kind or just bring you a Dr Pepper. Coke referring to soda or pop in general. Strange local customs I guess.
My wife and I were joking that instead of a blood transfusion they get sweet tea transfusions in the south.

I tried them a couple of times, and thought they were kind of bleh. Then, I had some fresh, homemade ones at a cook-out, and got hooked. Of course, you have to have the boiler, and make them outside. I made them once on the stove, and what a mistake THAT was.
So yummy and addicting! I tried making them on my stove once and it was terrible!Anyone want to talk boiled peanuts? YUM!!! :slurp: :slurp: :slurp:

Yes, definitely different. Also, keep in mind that sweet tea has no other flavor than just tea and sugar. Most of the sweet tea's I've had in the South actually taste more like sugar water than they do tea. I really can't drink pre-made/bottled/canned sweetened tea. I don't like the taaste of it. But true sweet tea, down here in Tennessee, is made with simply water, sugar and tea bags.what I still dont get is: does sweet tea taste different than say snapple or arizona brands? tastes pretty sweet to me?
do they have these down south, in Jersey that's what people drink when they want ice tea(at least the people I know).
They make the best sweet tea along with all the mexican restaurants around here!:slurp::slurp:With so many people being diet-minded nowadays, I am surprised that McDonald's promotes sweet tea (extra large just $1!). It is even up on their outside billboard in my town. At least their tea is fresh brewed. The few McAllisters I have been into have promoted their fresh tea, but not sweetned. I guess they let you decide. Sweetner here with a slice of lemon.
