"We only found one ride in Epcot"

I have many stories about my friend and her family who are not well seasoned Disney fanatics like my family. I have called my friend Mrs X to protect her as there are many stories I have to share. In 2008 they went to Florida for xmas. As we sat at home green with envy and shivering with the cold we would ask each day wonder what they are doing now and what parks are they visiting? On their return we asked what parks did you visit. Oh we didn't do Disney they said. We visited Universal, Epcot and Animal Kingdom. We couldn't believe after 5 visits to Florida that they did not know that Animal Kingdom and Epcot were Disney parks. To add insult to injury we were treated to the photos they took. We couldn't believe it. Yes there they were in the Magic Kindgdom on what we were told was xmas day. They did not even know that the Magic Kingdom was a Disney park. How could they have failed to notice the Castle or Mickey himself but yes they had. Now I ask you is that a waste or what? You maybe seriously concerned for my friend and her family but I can assure you we are well used to them and expect nothing less. There are many other stories relating to Mrs X and her family some of which would not be for sharing in this forum but if you can top this one please let me know.:king:

This is inconceivable!!!! Are you sure they weren't jerkin' your chain? How in the :fork: can someone go to EPCOT, AK, AND the Magic Kingdom and not know they went to Disney? Everyone from 2 on up knows the MK is Disney...people even complain that others think that MK is Disney World. What did they think Disney was? Did you question them?
I am alarmed!!!

Learning things, experiencing new feelings, sights and foods, and having genuinely interesting stories afterward is the mark of a far far more interesting person. Why even waste time talking to a tourist who sat around their room all vacation? They should just check into the local Holiday Inn and save money, and acknowledge that they are a failure in this important aspect of a good life.

No unfortunately this is a genuine story we call them shiney people because they have a very short attention span a bit like goldfish. I do love them but their main interest on holiday is shopping they just don't get the Disney Magic.

I got one

Ok...after reading the stories I gotta share one.

My boss and her family, they live in AZ, went to WDW this past Christmas holiday. Family of 5. Well, she had been plotting and planning the trip for almost a year. She decided to go all out since they had never been to WDW only to Disney Land. Well, they did the whole kit and kaboodle. They stayed at the Grand Floridian..did the package deal...stayed on the conceriege level (?)....made arrangements for treats to be in the room before check in for the kids......what could be done she did it. Now you'd think that with all that she was doing they would also go all out at the parks as well. NOT. After they got back I asked her what all they had done and seen and so forth. Well, somehow they missed the Osborn lights, they didn't go to Fantasmic, and then to boot they didn't explore EPCOT. I was shocked. I asked what they did do and the same response like many others...they stayed at the resort a lot and watched televison or played games!!
I adore WDW probably much more than I should and to not explore the culture and music and sights/sounds and the plays ...it just wows me. And to not adventure to the countries and to see the Osborn lites let alone totally miss Fantasmic.....ok...again wow.

That's what a co-worker said to me today. She just returned from her first trip to WDW. Asside from only riding Test Track in Epcot she managed to completely skip AK and the Studios. She is also under the impression Universal is part of Disney World. I'm not good at not sounding rude when I start spewing Disney info so I just kept my mouth shut and smiled.

I know she had fun but I cringe just thinking about all the fun that was missed. How does someone spend so much money on a vacation like this and not bother to do any sort of research on their destination?

The worst for me is that the high point of her trip seemed to be that they had cable and wireless internet in the off property condo they rented. :brick:

lol what really cracks me up is when my friends tell me they had a miserable time in disney. did they plan anything? nah. they think they can eat anywhere they want, and of course they go when it's 100 outside. no research whatsoever.

I just found this thread. I have experienced the same thing with friends who I have "helped" I would print out an entire itinerary of each day what to see when to see it what to avoid at certain times and when they come back well did you see ( insert any attraction) well no we were looking at something else. I have stopped offering now and with the fewer people who know my strategy the better for me to get around ! I did go to Disneyland once. I won/earned a trip to Las Vegas and rented a car and drove to Disneyland! It was awesome to see how it started and some of the different rides. My next trip is 4/4/09 with my GRANDSONS ! When I was making reservations the CM said wow you have been here over 25 times ! I smiled. Actually it is closer to 30 I won/earned trips there too.

I know the feeling too, I have a co-worker who is going with her daughter and mom and sister and her son. I've made suggestions and she has taken them and passed them on to the rest of the family. I referred them to KK, mother went to another travel agent, her sister was dead set on going to DTD PI and after her telling her sister that I said it was closed she finally found out that it was by going to the WDW web site. Then her mother thought it was better to have a park a day tickets till I said you get a better deal with park hoppers, she fought that too. The only thing she jumped on (her mother that is) was DME, she thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.

This past summer we went over the 4th of July with my family. My son and I have been to WDW and/or DL yearly, and we still miss stuff - and after working with Tammy (KK) I am still learning. When we planned our trip last summer over the 4th of July my sisters family and my parents added on as well as another relative. I worried as it was a first time all-Disney trip for all of them, during the dead heat of summer and a major holiday. I knew my son and I would be fine, but my mother hates crowds, my brother in law is not a disney fan, and my dad stopped going on vacations when I was a teenager! I forced my family to sit and plan the trip with me and I know that outside of my sister and my son none of them "got it" - until we got there! Everyone enjoyed their trip (ok - except for the extra relative who would have much rather been sitting in the woods back home - but hey Disney just wasn't his thing!) and all understood why I was a freakazoid about planning in advance.

Brother in law said it was "ok", and his goal for the trip really was for my sister and their 2yr old to have fun. I think he may have liked it more than he let on as they are going again this August, and I am so proud of her because she is taking the time to research and plan and I know they will be ok without me :) Plus they are going with friends that were in the college program.

This year my challenge is taking my boyfriend and his family with us, and hoping that they too will enjoy their trip as well as it is their first Disney trip. I feel as though I am being tested though as boyfriends mom said I could just plan everything, and they will follow along, cuz she "trusts" my judegment:lookaroun Yeah... (biting nails) I am hoping to wrangle this group together for a night of planning!

What gets me is the people that only do WDW and never leave the property. They have no idea all the stuff they are missing out on. In Orlando you have Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Seaworld, and less then an hour away you have not only Busch Gardens Tampa, but the Kennedy Space Center.

I stay offsite as it is cheaper for me since I go alone and since I have my own car I can go do other things then just the parks. I do three days in the Disney Parks (one park per day), which are mainly the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. the rest of the time is either Universal or doing something else. Since I am now going every year if I miss something I can catch it the next year. I am usually down there for 10 days so never feel rushed.

This summer I will be doing not only do the main three Disney Parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot & Hollywood Studios) and both Universal Studios parks, but Busch Gardens Tampa & Seaworld for the first time and depending on how I feel I might even do the Kennedy Space Center since I haven't been there since the mid '90s.

I never plan my vacation out as I like to see how I feel when I get down there and then decide on which parks to visit each day.

There's three main parks? :lookaroun

Dude, AK. Go.

The thing that frustrates me is when people find out we're going on vacation and ask where we're going. I tell them, "Disney, of course!". And they always say, "don't you get sick of it? Why don't you go some place you've never been before?"

It frustrates me because, like everyone else has said, they have no clue! Most people I know have never been, but always say if they were to go to Disney, they'd go with us.

We've been many, many times.....a lot since we live in Northern Maine, but no, we NEVER get sick of it! haha!

IMO, one thing Epcot needs to do better is point people where they want to go a bit better. I know, signage ruins the magic, but some people just aren't observant enough. I've heard similar stories from relatives and friends, that they just "don't get" Epcot. Epcot requires reading the guidemap a bit before entering. Its an exhausting park, because its so huge. Wasting steps in Epcot can cost you time and energy.

Ok, I know I used to work in Epcot, but honestly before ever working there, I knew where the rides were. I don't get this issue with Epcot.
The signs in Epcot probably do need to be placed better because there is one right before Art of Disney and we would get guests coming in to ask if "this was the way to Nemo." Which is strange because AOD has only one door and you can see that once you get inside, but that's not the point. Also, I did pretty darn well in directing people where they needed to go.
I cannot count how many times I directed people to Fast Track from the pin cart!:animwink::ROFLOL:

Epcot, particularly Future World, is the odd park out in many ways. I can see how, to the untrained eye, it may not make particular sense.

Epcot is easily laid out. To make it simple, it's like the egyptian symbol for life. I think people get turned around though when they exit something like SSE or Innoventions that have more than 1 exit, but they just need to pull out that handy dandy map and realize where they are.:animwink:
