Test drove the 09 Subaru WRX yesterday...

Scared my wife half to death...and the salesman too.

Official: GM shrinking to four brands; Pontiac to four models
In an interview Sunday with Automotive News, Troy Clarke, GM's North American president, said that General Motors will be able to make good on its promise to Congress to drastically cut costs. Clarke said that GM will now focus its "product and marketing resources" on Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC. That would leave Pontiac, Saturn, Saab and HUMMER in automotive limbo. As part of that same plan presented to lawmakers, GM said it would sell or close Saturn. And since no one has yet stepped forward with cash, the future is not at all certain for the unique brand despite what GM's marketing VP Mark LaNeve says.

In a separate interview, Bob Lutz told AN that Pontiac will also have to get by with only four models: the G8, G5, Vibe and Solstice. Or five models if you count the Solstice coupe separately as Lutz does. Shrinking the brand would complete yet another promise GM made to Congress to make Pontiac a niche brand.

Finally...

Actual production model SS/RS. (Also, final HP numbers on the SS... 400hp (Automatic)... 426hp (Manual))

This is "Victory Red" with "Cyber Grey Metallic" stripes (same color found on the ZR-1)

The only thing about this car that I dislike are the "ripples" near the back wheel well. Either open them or get rid of them completely. (Yes, I understand this is a retro-touch). Also, the mail-slot in the front...MAKE IT FUNCTIONAL! Aesthetically I love it...but if you're going to put something on a car...make it have a purpose.

These were taken at the NAIAS.

(Big difference from the Base model that's at Test Track)

I was impressed with the one at Test Track. The wheels were crap, but I liked the shape a lot better in person than I had in photos.

I may have to drive one when they're out. It might be interesting to drive the Camaro and 370Z back to back on the same day.

The 370 is out for me. I need the 2+2. I would say that the 370 is probably a more "refined" "sports car" but the Camaro is one bad-hiney piece of machinery.

The Camaro will beat the 370 0-60, the 1/4 mile, etc. The 370 will probably be able to catch up in the corners though. They aren't really the same "beast."

I was actually surprised that the 370Z doesn't weigh THAT much less than the Camaro. (Although the Camaro has almost 100 more hp.)

The first retail production Camaro went up for Auction this weekend at the Barrett Jackson.

$350,000.

Hendrick from Hendrick Motorsports was the winning bidder.

I've been looking a little more seriously at the Camaro recently. My first impulse would be: "If you're going to get a Camaro, you've got to go with the V8", but looking at the pricing and specs, I'm starting to wonder about that.

The V6 has 300 HP which - combined with a good six-speed manual - seems like it should be more than enough. And the V6 seems more sophisticated, a couple hundred pounds lighter and much better specific output combined with better mileage than the V8.

And the LT2 comes with all-season tires (always a concern of mine), leather, Boston Acoustics sound system all for $27,000 (and I can get at least $1000 off that with my GM points), so it seems like, for the money, the V6 LT2 may be hard to beat.

From a pure emotional point of view, I prefer the 370Z, but I'd need to get all-season tires for it, and to get higher end stereo and leather, I'd need to spend close to $10,000 more than the LT2. The Camaro also offers a back seat and bigger trunk, so it's really got me thinking.

Brian (or anyone else who's been watching) any idea when LT2's may really be available and on lots to check out?

The actual production start date has been pushed back until March 16th. I've been hearing that they are trying to get production-spec'd and ready vehicles into showrooms ASAP (not for purchase, but for test-drives, and so people can actual "touch" them. (This has already started happening). Car shows now have production ready vehicles and they are allowing you to sit in them.

As far as the LT2 is concerned...I think you have a better chance at one of these than you do an SS. Last numbers out, 10,000 Camaros have already sold...and approx. 80% of those were SS's. (I think they overestimated the amount of V8's they were going to sell at launch).

For a fair "guess" I would say early to mid April you'll be seeing V6's in the showrooms.

This car isn't a sophisticated luxurious sports car...it's a beast. It's a pony car. Cheap money with great power...and with the IRS...it should have much improved handling. (Reviewers say that the G8 handles better than the 5 series BMW...and this is an updated version of the same platform.) (Zeta I vs. Zeta II)

Thanks! The G8 does seem to be getting very good reviews, so that's a good sign and I've seen some preliminary reviews of pre-production Camaros that also seem encouraging.

More and more have been popping up. (I believe their in production right now...but only pumping out 7 per day). This is just to tweak the line though. These are the cars that will be arriving to the dealerships/car shows, etc.

I saw pics of a REALLY nice Inferno Orange Metallic SS with white rally stripes...man, what a nice looking car.

The only thing I'm torn on...is color combo. I love the rally stripes...

Orange with White
Orange with Cyber Gray
Red with Cyber Gray (like the one I posted a few days ago)
Imperial Blue with White (or silver)
Cyber Gray with Black

I also am not sure (if I go with Orange) do I get the complete Orange Interior Kit or partial.
(Complete kit takes that same orange from the exterior and brings it to the door panels and dash...and has orange faced seats) To me, it seems like it may be "orange overkill" so I may go with black seats and just the orange dash inserts.

(Here's a video showing off the orange dash (no seats)...at about 5:30 you can see the Interior Ambient Lighting (when he shuts the car off and turn it back on).

They also have red and yellow inserts (if you don't want color, the standard with cloth seats will bring the cloth (beige, gray, or black) onto the door and dash...and if you get leather, a "titanium" insert is added.

EDIT: I'd be at the dealership putting a deposit down if I could at least sit in one. I can't see shelling out close to 40K for a vehicle that I haven't even sat in...let alone driven. GM is losing money due to the constant delays of this car.

My car will be:

SS
RS package
Convenience and Connectivity package (iPod hookup, USB port, and Blu-Tooth)
Rear deck lid (not sure if I want the dovetail spoiler or the standard one...but I know I definitely don't want the "high" one)
Boston Acoustics system
Inferno Orange Interior (if I decide on orange)
Heated Leather seats.
Rally Stripes (factory installed)

I'm up in the air about the Ground Effects Package. I love it paired with the Dovetail spoiler on the Dale Earnhardt Jr. car.

Due to their "packages" I'll have to go with the 2SS/RS. I'm thinking it should be around $38K before my "GM Loyal Discount" of $3K)
