I know there are quite a few members on this site that do homeschooling. I am not going to judge their choices, and I am not commenting to incite any anger. I don't see social interaction as a major downfall of homeschooling.

Personally, I just don't know how it's possible.

I just don't know how a parent(no matter how smart they are) can possibly have the knowlege of every possible subject.

By the time I graduated high school, I was expected to by fairly fluent in a foreign language, know advanced calculus, physics, biology, chemistry, literature, social studies, history,computers. Not to mention a well balanced education should include art, music etc.

How can one person be competent enough and educated in so many specialized fields? And have the ability to actually teach, which is a skill in it's own right.

In my school district more than 45% of teachers have advanced degrees in their respective fields. Can a parent replace all the education of dozens of speialized educators?

I understand what you're saying, and you're right, a lot of parents dont have degrees. But, having a degree doesnt always mean the kid will learn from you. I mean, if that was the case EVERY kid who went to school or college for that matter should be a lot smarter than homeschool kids, because most of the teachers and professors have a degree. Obviously thats not the case.

Like any other teacher you have curriculums you have to follow and books you have to use, as a parent you have to know HOW to teach the information so that your kid will benefit from it. Also the relationship between a parent and child is different than a teacher and child. The child also has to be willing to do their part.

I dont care if you went to Harvard and have umpteenth degrees in a billion subjects. Thats never a guarantee that the child will get a BETTER education, again look at where America is compared to the world in education, overall we're not the best.

Again, some kids are best suited for public school and others do better being homeschooled for different reasons.

I have no problem with home schooling, although nobody ever says anything about the parents who are unable to teach, or do a poor job of it just because they aren't good teachers. If people think that there are no inept or incapable parents teaching their kids at home they are living in a dream world. By the same token, those who have said the public schools are all bad need to get a grip as well. There are some very good public schools, however I tend to think we gauge how good a school is going to be by how much money we throw at it. That has proven to be wrong.
My issue was with the statement made earlier that "Home Schooled kids are smarter than non home schooled kids". What an utterly ignorant generalization to make.
I tend to agree with the last few posters, some kids will do better home schooled, some will not.

Exactly! Yes! You have to look at it with an open mind. I get so angry at parents who give homeschooling a bad name and are really idiots who shouldnt be teaching anybody anything! Its the same with public schools, there are teachers who genuinely care about the job they have and do it well, while other teachers are horrible.

Those are some valid points! And I think WDWmazprty responded well!

You have to change your mindset when you make the decision to homeschool. It is more than learning and memorizing facts and then spewing them back out on the next test. It's a different approach to learning in general for the most part. I'm not saying it's a better way than the public school system... it's just different. Homeschooling is about learning to learn, where to find the answers (not necessarily knowing the answers)... and isn't that what life is all about!?! I know this form of learning is impossible in the public system for the most part! Educators have no way to know if a child has mastered a topic unless they test. I know when my child knows a concept and can move on from that point.

And knowing it all will not necessarily make you a better a teacher. I had some brillant professors in university but honestly they s*#ked at teaching. I learn at the same time my child learns. It is dedication on our both our parts. And with technology, the internet, homeschooling becoming more mainstream, etc. the information is more readilly available to me.

The point is I know my child best and his/her learning style best. The child will learn... even the subjects I don't know how to teach!

Sorry to go OT!

Let me see... guest failures? Oh yeah, when people see my kids at Disney and assume I've pulled them out of school to vacation! Nope, field trip! :animwink: :cool:

You don't have to be Bill Nye to teach homeschooling. The lessons come with everything you need to teach someone.

I did it for 11th and 12th grade and I still have plenty of time for social interaction. And most satellite schools have buildings where they administer tests and also have tutoring available and also they provide field trips quite often.

Plus, I'd say about half of the girls at my daughter's cheer gym are home-schooled but obviously they have an extra curricular activity.

The funny thing is that when I started doing home school I got way ahead of myself. I was doing whole units at once in each subject, as opposed to chapters. I had the first semester done in 1 week.

lol! Same for us! Actually when we go to Epcot we count it as a fun school day. My 9 year old learned so much the last time, especially in Future World.

There are probably quite a few but these are the main ones:

:: When someone walking in front of you stops for no apparent reason, and when you then nearly walk into them, they give you a pretty nasty look. How hard is it to take a quick look behind before you stop?

:: Then there are those who walk slower than the speed the earth rotates at...and usually more than 3 abreast.

:: Those who use and abuse ECV's. I spent two weeks at WDW in a wheel chair as i knackered my knee the week before, and it was in a splint, with my leg straight out. The amount of looks i got because i was in a wheelchair and actually had an apparent reason was unreal. I understand a number of people are in the ECVs for genuine medical reasons, but there are an even larger number who aren't. These are the ones whos disability is in seeing nothing wrong with walking parts of the parks and resorts...until it comes to a show, or getting on a bus.

:: Those who breach bus etiquette.
This is anyone who -
> tries to board the bus by the rear doors as people come off, you know the doors marked 'no entry';
> those who try to skip past a long queue of people waiting to board - often those who have just tried the back door;
> those who, when asked, refuse to move to the rear of the bus leaving an 8 foot gap which would easily get another 8 or so people on;
> those who break 'the five seat rule' where they get on using their wheelchair taking up three seats only to go and sit down taking up another two :fork::brick::shrug::zipit:; :confused:
> those who board with a wheelchair and seem to have a family size akin to that of a rabbit;
> those who moan about standing as its unsafe. If it wasn't safe then the buses in disney (and buses / trains / metros everywhere else in the world) would not be certified to allow standing passengers;
> those who get on the bus, ignore the message not to eat or drink and then spill everything over others...when they are standing and do this, you cant say anything as the person obviously doesnt have all their mental faculties.
> those who moan about waiting 20m01sec for a bus yet will queue much longer for rides. Perhaps it would be too much common sense for you to go and speak to one of the drivers or dispatcher and make them aware.
> those who have strollers, and have stood in a long queue but wait until they are trying to board until attempting to fold them down.
> those who do not offer seats to those who could really do with it.

:: Those who breach pool etiquette, mainly those who -
> 'do a german' using just one folded white towel. ('Doing a German' the act of getting to a place first, reserving your place and coming back in a couple of hours.). Thankfully now there are signs if there are towels left like that they'll be cleared. If someone is doing that with their own belongings and going to get something to eat in the resort that isnt a problem. It is if they go off to a park somewhere for a couple hours.
> those who have loud, personal conversations on their mobiles that you really dont want to hear - as they are never very interesting
> those who move the seats by the pool to places where they shouldnt be and then block off the paths

:: Those who come in at the very last moment at parades and fireworks and try to barge in on where you have been sitting for the last couple of hours. When you then have words with these people they immediately look at you as they have no idea what language you are speaking in or the point you are trying to make. It is interesting that it is often those from a particular country of the Commonwealth who all of a sudden can't speak or understand English.

If we decide to sit at Main Street Station and get seats then we move the seats back so I can stretch my legs out (im 6'2) and have a few inches between them and the railings. This way you dont feel as clostrophobic when the masses rush in behind you at 8.59 or 9.59 whenever it may be. Also handy to sit with the tallest at the ends to have the legs against the railings to stop anyone coming in beside or infront of you. If you had young kids and asked then its a different story.

:: On a similar note, those who raise their kids onto their shoulders for stage parades and fireworks. Not everyone can, or is willing as they know it will affect others, to lift their child onto their shoulders. Yes the fireworks are in the sky but its not easy for someone 3-4ft to see over someone who is now 8 foot, or from their angle, the height of the castle.

:: Those who have the dining plan but have no idea what they can get each day, and procede to have an argument with the CSR at the till whilst all of us behind with what was until this point, hot food, try to pay and get to eat it before it gets lukewarm.

:: Those who moan for no real reason . This is typically moaning about something that is beyond the control of Disney or something that they have brought upon themselves.

:: Those who don't plan for that day and then get to the park, just beyond the turnstile and welcome show and STOP. 'Right, (As a few thousand walk by) what are we going to do first'? I mean, seriously, it takes 10 minutes the night before to work out what they want to do the following day.

:: Those who believe that they can use strollers as battering rams to work their way thru a crowd. I fully expect to see one retro-fitted with boadicea spikes or bull bars one of these days. As these are often conveying those who really are a bit too old to be in them, with that weight, you know it when they hit you.

:: Those who lose the heads at thier kids because the whole family is tried and crabbit as the parents have marched them around the parks for a good 10 or 12 hours. It is no fun for anyone doing things that way! And when you get back home you'll feel more tired than you did before you went.

:: Anyone who complains at a CM in an agressive manner because they are unhappy at something beyond the control of that, or any CM. Its raining torrents, there is thunder and lightning so there is no Spectro or Electrical Parade and by shouting at this cast member, they'll actually run the parade for us.

:: "We've paid to come here" - "oooh really? oooft you must be in the minority then! you've also been had by your travel agent if you actually paid, PAID?!? to come here? Surely not!". We had this once a couple years ago when some common type from New York (they were from New York and they were also about as common as you get) came out with those words - when at the pool. They left the pool, clearing the sun loungers of all belongings, so our friends took them. Returning an hour later We got "we've paid to come here" and "we were here before so they are OUR chairs"; "ok, well I wont ask you how much you've paid, but I am guessing that as we are here for two weeks and have come from Scotland, we will have paid more than you. In addition, if your logic is 'weve been here and sat on the seats before then they are ours' we have been two weeks every year since 1996 so everyone that is sat around this pool deck area are actually sitting on OUR seats too". She was soon lost for words.

:: Anyone who doesn't follow published rules.

:: Those who dont actually bother about what their kids are up to and let them do what they please to the annoyance of others.

:: Those who have a competition during a ride or show to see how loud they can get the decibel app on their phone to go.

:: The flash photography thing isn't a huge bugbear of mine, however it is a bit annoying. Just put the camera on its low light / high sensitivity mode or up the iso to its maximum and you wont need a flash. None of the pictures published in books / park guides have been taken with flash.

:: Anyone who proclaims themselves a Disney expert when even though you don't claim to be, you know they are talking utter tosh.

:: Anyone who refers to the United Kingdom as England.

I consider myself very tolerant and considerate. But I believe at some points -unintentionally of course- I'd be one of those people on the list. It's unavoidable. Sometimes you stop all of a sudden unconsciously. Or perhaps during a show, I forgot to turn off my cellphone. I mean it can happen no matter how careful you are.

I think a lot of people posting in here are forgetting that... :\ No one's perfect, after all.

You're absolutely right. I understand when people forget to turn off their flash and cellphone and that doesn't bother me...it can happen to anyone. What irritates me is when people do this intentionally with no regards to the rules or anyone else around them. When someone actually plans on taking flash photos because they believe that they are entitled or more important than anyone else it gets under my skin.

I think I am annoyed at the sense of entitlement that a lot of people have at Disney ("but I PAID to be here" "but it's my daughters Birthday/first trip/10th trip/Christmas trip" etc etc) because I used to escort families with terminally ill children to the parks.

It could be these families that people are ruining the magic for when they decide to be rude, take flash pictures, cut in line or act completely selfish.

Trust me their last trip to Disney World (or anywhere) is a lot more important than someone else's first trip or birthday party.

Hello all,

VERY interesting thread to read. It seems that a lot of the top pet peeves are people who are rude, obnoxious, or just plain mean and disrespectful. Here is my list, in no particular order.

1. People who push and shove their way into a spot to see a parade or show with no consideration for others. - This happens just about anywhere you go, Disney or not.

2. Blatant abuse of Cast Members. - Verbally abusing a Cast Member just because you can't get your way is absolutely PATHETIC. Case in point: Duchess1576's post.

3. Stopping in the middle of traffic. - This is something to be expected from anyone who goes to the MK parks. That being said, show some consideration and at least move to one side or the other.

4. Loud and obnoxious people on a ride/attraction who drown out the music or narration. - VERY common on rides like Small World or the Haunted Mansion. Do us all a favor and SHUT UP

5. Flash Photography. - Look, the technology that exists now should be enough for you to use a camera that doesn't need to flash on rides like the Haunted Mansion. The flashes take away from the overall feel of the attraction and can ruin the experience.

6. People who leave their trash everywhere and have never seen a trash can or what it was designed for. - I have a question: Do you do that at your own home? Don't you think Cast Members have enough work to do? CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF! Just because you're on vacation doesn't give you the right to be a slob. Show some manners and consideration.

7. Smoking. - Disney has given smokers a designated area for this. I understand that people have their vices and smoking is one of them. That does NOT entitle you to smoke anywhere in the parks, blow your smoke in other people's direction, or flick the butts on the ground or in the bushes.

8. Needlessly using wheelchairs or scooters. - This is a VERY touchy subject because a lot of people need these and depend on them for mobility. That doesn't give someone who isn't disabled or lazy the right to use them. I think it's wrong for someone to get one just so they can go to the front of a line for an attraction or bus ride.

9. Taking someone's table at a restaurant/diner. - Have people really gotten that lazy that they need to shove a small kid out of the way and take a table that he/she was saving for their parents/ family? I have an idea for anyone who does that. How about if you ask the child if they're saving the table for someone instead of telling them to move. How would you feel if you were a kid and someone did that to you. As a parent, if someone did that to my kid, I would have been arrested for beating the crap out of the person who did it.

10. Flopping onto 2-3 seats on an already overcrowded bus when you only need one. - I have seen this more times than I care to count. This not only happens with kids, but adults as well. As a parent, what kind of example do you set for your kids when you do something like that?

I could go on and on here but I'll stop at 10. Everything I have read on these posts are preventable as long as people have manners and respect. Disney is a vacation spot that people pay a lot of money to go to and have fun. That doesn't mean that you should act better than everyone else and make Cast Members kiss your feet, act obnoxious, or let your kids get out of hand.

I AM a smoker and this probably bothers me the most also.... My husband and I ALWAYS go to the designated area, and ALWAYS use the buttcan. We are glad they have smoking areas and understand that lots of people dont want to be around it. Disney has plenty of areas for smoking and properly putting out cigarette butts. Its not that hard to make your way to one of these areas!!

Brazallian tour groups cutting in line, leaning on the divider in the epcot food bay as your eating, Squeazing in lifts before you even get out of a life and then them screaming at you and trying to get into a fight when you politely ask them to wait until you get out. :hammer::hammer::brick::brick:

Oh wow, that sounds like it could be a sketch in the Larry David show, "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Spotlighting uncomfortable comedy!
