Toontown demolition has started!

Seems from this article it was mentioned early on:

"Mickey and Minnie’s houses will be moved to another area and some reports indicate that a new character area will be installed on Mainstreet."- From the following link when FE was first announced: http://web.me.com/jpegdesigns/Disney...Expansion.html
That link is to an article written from a fan's perspective, and unless I missed it, he doesn't cite a source from Disney on the houses moving.

As I recall, this rumor picked up steam when Jim Hill (could be wrong on that) wrote a story about the houses moving. The idea was thinly sourced and based on ambiguous wording from a Disney release, but it started bouncing around fan sites and then began showing up in definitive sounding articles like that one. I am almost certain Disney never said it was happening.

I'll do some more research on this to see if my memory is correct.

It also picked up steam after the D23 anniversary party at the MK. The Imagineer was drilled with questions about the fate of Mickey and Minnie's houses, the Imagineer said something along the lines of they will always have a home in the MK (or something like that). Everybody took the word "home" to mean "house" and rumors started to fly...

Yes! That rings a bell too.

Yes, that is a fan's perspective and is old info from 2009. That FLE info doesn't even mention the updated plans, so I wouldn't consider it a reliable source at all!

My guess is Donalds boat also. It was over near the Barnstormer and that is going to be rethemed. Also I guess they are going to replace the tents so that area is more easily done later.

Makes sense to get the boat out of there and most likely TTF farmers market also so they have extra room if needed to retheme Barnstormer.

The two largest tents are currently slated to remain, with the Judge's Tent coming down, along with Donald's Boat and the market.

It was my understanding that the tents would be torn down, with two new ones being erected, as the state of the current tents is very poor.

That could also be true. And if so, the two new ones will be the exact same size and shape of the two existing ones.

Can't say I spent much time in ToonTown Fair because... well... I didn't. I think I walked through the streets once back when I was in high school and once I realized it was for small children just walked straight out and pretty much never returned.

I do want to send my condolences to those who have memories in this part of the park.

For me, it would be like them tearing out Frontierland. Lots of good times with friends in Frontierland.

I just hope this Storybook Circus thing pans out and looks amazing or else I'll be even more disappointed that they didn't make Pixie Hollow.

I too feel bad for those families with children who really enjoyed Toontown. I grew up with the entire evolution (Birthday Land, Starland, Toontown), but I think it's getting a much needed overhaul/replacements.

If they build anything that's even close to what is currently planned, I think those families who are currently mourning will be pleasantly surprised. Except for Mickey and Minnie's ACTUAL houses, pretty much all of the Toontown offerings will be reincarnated in a "plussed" form.

burn, baby, burn. :goodnevil

Don't know why I'm happy to see it go - this was a spot you had to go out of your way to visit and was easy to forget existed unless you rode the train or wanted to see a fairy and it attracted hordes of strollers that would otherwise be in Caribbean plaza or Tomorrowland. . . but at the end of the day, this was an area that was not built up to the same standards as the rest of the park and it needed to GO AWAY!

So, there. Good riddance.

This is one of the reasons I think it is a mistake to build sub-par temporary features. Inevitably some people create memories around them and it makes it difficult to move on to better things. See LaL and the BAH for proof. I guess DCA was so bad nobody cares what gets removed from that park. It must have been really bad.

Agreed. It should have gone about 20 years ago. :dazzle:

But Mickey and Minnie's Houses were arguably the best and most charming elements in the entire section! And I'm not sure the surviving elements will be better or plussed, just different. Like Great Goofini will have a circus theme instead of a barn one, and probably won't have the AA chickens. Whether this new theme is better or not will lie in the eye of the beholder.

And for what it's worth, Toontown was one of my favorite sections in the park. I liked it's architecture, music loop, backstory, theme, and overall concept better than ALL of the others except Fantasyland. AND, I don't have any children and am over 30! ;)

Being able to hang out in the wacky, whimsical Toonish world where Mickey and the gang live just has more appeal and offers more escapism from reality to me than things like Liberty Square, Frontierland, and Main Street (colonial America, frontier America, and 1900's America), which are all based more in reality than Fantasyland and Toontown. Even the more exotic jungles of Adventureland and the now more toonish, fantasy-based Tomorrowland (which I prefer over the original, more factual TL) have less appeal to me as environments to be immersed in.

That's not to say I don't enjoy those other sections or most of their attractions because I do. Some, like the refreshingly toonish, fantasy-based Splash Mountain and Country Bears, I prefer even more than those in Toontown. And Space Mountain and Big Thunder are obviously more thrilling than the Barnstormer. So I'm not saying it was perfect in its attraction roster, although I consider the Mouse Houses my favorite walk-through attractions in the history of Disney theme parks.

I'm just saying as an environment, and as architecture, music, story, placemaking, whimsy, and charm, it's one of my favorite things Disney has ever done. And yes, I know Disneyland's is better (as are most things at DL compared to their MK counterpart!)

PS. I do appreciate your condolences, though, as I am definitely "mourning" ;)
