Tom Staggs drops some REAL information about the future

I've decided after months of Jessica Fletcher like sleuthing, that Lee and '74 are actually the same person. :)

Not quite. But there are some folks here that ... well, they have multiple personality disorder (or there just are multiple people posting under one screen name) ... and that doesn't even include folks with multiple accounts.

(BTW, I am MUCH better looking than Lee ... smarter too ... better personality ... better connections ... the one thing he has on me is the better singing voice ... oh, and I think he is better at determining what road kill was before it was ... well, smushed!)

Nobody is arguing and welcome to the discussion.

My point is, IPs are a major part of theme parks these days. And i'm saying is that Disney has hands down the best IPs and that contributes to their success. But again, it's only part of it. (wish I would have said this earlier)

Disney is acquiring IP for reasons other than lack of theme park attraction ideas. As it has been stated Disney's best work was not attached to IP. You should head over to http://www.disneyhistoryinstitute.com/. Walt started DL by hiring movie writers, set producers, and composers. They created the IP and much of that actually became movie and merchandise IP after the ride.

Disney today is just obsessed in some ways with the idea of synergy. They want to tie everything together and essentially double down on a particular 'investment'. There will always be a place for IP inspired attractions but that isn't what makes them good. What makes them good is the combination of the ride experience and storytelling (which can be entirely new and exclusive IP).

Also to those who think the problem is that WDI can't create non IP attractions is off base. Look at DCA and Buena Vista Street or pretty much all of TDS. I really need to go see TDS, it looks extraordinary and detail oriented.

Disney is a right of passage because the early days of it's existence put that in the mindset of many Americans. I think it's reasonable to say that the homogenization and blatant cash grabs have resulted in the parks evolving and a Disney vacation is no longer viewed as a "right of passage". I think Disney has hurt the brand to the point where a Disney World trip is no longer romanticized the same way it used to be.

It might be getting to that point, but it's not there yet. Being of the age where most of my peers have children under 10 years old, I can say that most people in my extended circle have gone to WDW or are planning to go. It's still viewed as a "must do" for your children at least once. But then again, it's still quite engaging for young children -- perhaps too much so, as many have noted how new attractions and theming always seem to cater to the stroller set.

I think were WDW has lost people is it is rapidly falling off as a "annual family vacation" type of tradition. It's still a rite of passage, but now it's "go once and then do something else" not repeated trips.

Once you visit TDS, NOTHING in O-Town will be seen in the same light ... least of all Disney's 'No. 1' theme park in the world.

It is freaking over the top amazing in every way (except it does suffer from merchandise issues, just different ones than WDW!)

Here is my thoughts....IP gets people in the gates..quality attractions get them coming back, IP or not (as others mentioned, above a certain age group).

I don't think we can actually compare 1955 and Disneyland at all to today. Disneyland was one of the only safe, family friendly, and recognizable names in the industry (and I would say they did create what we consider the "Theme park" vs "Amusement Park" terms we use today)

Oh, I also can drink Lee under the table too!
I gladly concede that one. Unless its iced tea, 'cause I can flat put that stuff away, Jack!

True ... and we all know how important hair really is. But is yours the same caliber as GG's? Not even close.
Besides, remember ... women and fanbois want the Spirit, men just want to be him!:D;)

Are you like the fanbois who are afraid of alcohol and coffee and ... ya know ... um, girls (although with DD, I can grasp why some fear factor might be healthy!)

Agreed. The benefit of Avatar in DAK is it is a point of reference for folks. Love, hate or apathetic towards Avatar, it will be a draw in that people tend to be interested in stuff they can conceptualize and identity with than less specific concepts (like Beastly Kingdomme) -- and it will be much easier to advertise and promote. From there, however, the draw will be be based on the quality of the attraction.

Sadly, at this point, WDW seems to need the comfort of an established IP to do even the smallest thing. But I'd rather see them build something tied to an IP than nothing at all, which seems to be the alternative.

Ugh, it's my dream to visit Tokyo DisneySea...

As of now, my favorite park is Islands of Adventure.

WDW is losing people because of prices. Most people simply can't afford to go to WDW every year or even once every few years. They go once when Little Johnny is 7 and Little Sue is 5, dump a lot of cash getting a room at Caribbean Beach Resort, on a meal at Cinderella's Royal Table, and dressed up the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. They then spend the next 4 years paying off their credit card debt for their week at the place where dreams come true. Now Johnny is 11 and Sue is 9. They might want to go back again but Mom and Dad are not sure they want to go through another 4 years of debt, especially since a trip to WDW now costs 30% more than the last one, there is nothing at WDW that's really calling to them because the kids are older and their tastes have matured, while WDW keeps targeting the kiddie patrol.

No announcement from Tom Staggs is going to make Disney more affordable unless, of course, he wants to announce "The Year of 50% Off".

I think it's a bad idea. How many kids are wearing Avatar shirts these days? Have you heard a lot of Avatar quotes randomly dropped around the office? Have you signed into your "AvatarMore" account yet? I bet the kids are clamoring for those "Na'vi" wigs with the interactive roots.

A ride would do. One single attraction. But an entire land based off a franchise that's cooled its heels and people are actually forgetting was the biggest movie of 2009? It's like a hangover. "Oh, we loved that movie? I almost forgot about it. Where's my box of Chasers?".

To those who think Disney acquiring avatar was a bad idea, I bet u guys would freak if universal acquired it and say "Disney missed another great opportunity and how you believe it could of been a potter swatter"

I don't think anyone would have said that...I don't even think it was a bad idea by Disney to acquire it even if it was a knee jerk reaction to Potter. I'd would however have been fairly confident universal would have built it better and been willing to spend the money to make it a good quality lasting land regardless of how the films do. I have less confidence in Disney in regards to that at the moment with their cut cut cut! happy culture.
I don't think the Avatar would ever have been a Potter swatter... Wouldn't have said that even if your hypothetical scenario had occurred.

On a completely different note, I likeyour avatar picture
