They ruined DL's Small World how much longer before they ruin ours?

It's a basic case of "Supply and demand" People are "demanding" the characters so Disney is "supplying" them.
Unfortunateley people have a unhealthy sense of entitlement these days. As for the character dolls I think Alice and the white rabbit are the only ones appropriate for the ride.

I have checked out the videos and they look great in my opinion. How is this any different than adding Johnny Depp to Pirates?
Because people wanted to see Jack Sparrow in the ride and the character exists within that world. There was no logical reason to put Disney characters into It's a Small World.

Characters exist in the Small World as well, and that is because the Small World is our world. These characters are mostly representatives of their country's legend and culture.

I agree that this would be a nice addition, but I dont agree that IASW is stale. I think that they should have put it in WDW's version first, and spared DL's because theirs is the original. I think it worked well at HKDL and would work at WDW.

So I went back to the Park with a friend today for my sixth ride (for those keeping score at home) on the new Small World. My experience today with the comments of the other guests around us sealed the deal for me that this change is much ado about nothing.

The Park wasn't very crowded today, but the ride had a 10 minute wait with both sides of the loading area running. In line we were surrounded by a mixture of locals and tourists (the tourists from Seattle and Portland and Salt Lake all had on shorts even though it was barely 60 degrees, while the locals were bundled up like Arctic explorers). Everyone was chatting in line about seeing the "Disney dolls" added to the ride. This was a big media story in SoCal last week, and people are still talking about it.

We got in the back row with a cute tourist family of five in front of us. Dad with the 8-ish girl in row 4 and Mom with the two younger boys in row 3. The kids loved the ride, and pointed excitedly at their favorite characters as pointed out by Mom or Dad. Flounder and Nemo and Dory in the South Seas rooms were the big hit with the girl, and Stich was the big hit with the boys. The Finale' room elicited a comment from Mom to Dad of "This is so gorgeous! They just do an amazing job with this stuff!", with Dad nodding in agreement as the new technicolor LED glitter-fest Finale' played out.

As we exited the building and our boats slowly crept along through the topiary gardens going back to the loading area, the boat behind us was stacked immediately behind. There was two older couples sitting in the first and second row of that boat, and I could easily hear their chatter about the ride. All the comments about the characters were complimentary, and the wives were talking about how "Disneyland made that ride even cuter than it was!".

Exiting the ride with crowds of people from both sides of the unloading dock there was happy chatter and big smiles all around. The newly revamped and freshly rehabbed ride was clearly still The Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed. Particularly after watching the little kids in the rows ahead of us, I'm convinced these changes were appropriate and appreciated by the casual visitor who probably has no idea who Mary Blair is. Enough said.

One other thing I noticed on this ride is that the brand new dolls in the Spirit of America Farm scene are fully functioning Audio Animatronics. In the Farm scene on the left side of the flume there are three dolls dressed up like farmers. Their mouths move, their eyes blink, their heads nod and turn, etc. Unlike the assertion that Disney has been phasing out the AA dolls in favor of static dolls, these new American dolls are circa-1964 full Animatronics. If you haven't been on the ride you don't notice these easily as all of the YouTube video I've seen focuses more on the cowboys and Indians and Woody and Jesse toys on the opposite side of the flume.

The accusations of budget-cuts and allegedly missing dolls mentioned on other sites by well-meaning folks with foggy memories have been disproved by both YouTube and personal experience. Case closed. :D

Who says Anaheim and Orlando have nothing in common?

By the way, the guest comments you described are exactly the kind of thing I was talking about in 272 & 279.

Give me this IASW rehab 100 times before they put Johnny in Pirates. I hate that rehab. Talk about ruining a story.

For me, Pirates was not ruined I guess, but certainly lessened years ago when the PC police struck. Adding Jack in doesn't bother me too much. I might feel differently if they had added Jack in to the Un-PC version. There's still enough there that's its my favorite darkride (along with Haunted Mansion).

No' Disney characters are not the Children of the world. BTW I was not too thrilled with how POTC turned out either.

What I meant was the fact that you said Jack existed in the Pirates world, but seem to suggest that these characters don't exist in the Small World. The Small World is our world, and these characters exist in our world. They are the ancient legends and lore of this world. They are representations of the ideals and cultures of this world.

As for the children of the world arguement, as mentioned before, neither are Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. For that matter, neither are penguins. Neither are fishing polar bears, or whales, or walri. Neither are lions, tigers, bears (oh my), birds, lambs, koalas, elephants, geese, GIANT CHESS PIECES, lepruchauns, goats, hippos, hyenas, Shakti, memaids, llamas, anthropomorphic cacti, Mounties that are the only representative of their country!

Every person in the ride doesn't have to be a child. They never were. There were always others that represent the culture of the countries. The ride is about international harmony. It isn't just about the children of the world singing, but it's also a showcase of the cultures of the countries around the world. Most of the added characters are just that, representations of the cultures, stories, or fauna of their respective areas.

People are not "demanding" charecters. You have no proof of that.

Exactly. In fact, Disney has even said that people want LESS characters!

Case in point: Character Dining.

:drevil:

Anyway I must disagree with the Ariel hate. The other mermaid was featured in the same prominent way , right inside the shell, all lights on her. Now, if the previous mermaid just so happened to have a red wig, nobody would be complaining. I think that she fits perfectly. I mean, the previous mermaid needed very little less attention then this one. Seriously, how many people have stared at that one mermaid for the whole ride through the ocean section, totally missing the other mermaids and caring less about the background fish? I believe that they took out the garbled voice because, you know, Ariel doesn't sound garbled in the movie, why should she sound that way in the ride? And on Flounder, that area kind of stuck out for a while. It needed something there, and anyway, he totally blends in with the rest of the fish in the background (yes, I know that they're a bit more cartoony than the rest of the ride anyway).

P.S. To be fair, America IS pretty bad...

Finally, I agree that everything is subjective.

Why cant they just leave things the way as Walt had left them. I just dont understand it? I have never been to disneyland before and I'm only 17 but I do understand greatly and apprectiate what Walt did for people of all ages. Once again why cant they just leave attractions the way as Walt had it, please Disney just leave Walt's stuff alone everyone loves the original versions.

Not true, and Walt himself said that Disneyland was never meant to be a museum, which is exactly what you're proposing

ug, the "museum" argument. I do believe what he meant was keeping the attraction the same in specific appearance (the shape and number of the dolls, the colour of the sets etc). Not just let it use 1966 technology so that the robots would break down all the time, speakers would be impossible to hear and 300 pound guests would be told they can't sit in the boat.

Oh, I'm not saying that they should have added characters to IASW. I'm totally Switzerland on this argument. I'm just saying that keeping every single Disneyland original the same ride forever would get very boring and stale. Even walt knew this.
