So I went back to the Park with a friend today for my sixth ride (for those keeping score at home) on the new Small World. My experience today with the comments of the other guests around us sealed the deal for me that this change is
much ado about nothing.
The Park wasn't very crowded today, but the ride had a 10 minute wait with both sides of the loading area running. In line we were surrounded by a mixture of locals and tourists (the tourists from Seattle and Portland and Salt Lake all had on shorts even though it was barely 60 degrees, while the locals were bundled up like Arctic explorers). Everyone was chatting in line about seeing the "Disney dolls" added to the ride. This was a big media story in SoCal last week, and people are still talking about it.
We got in the back row with a cute tourist family of five in front of us. Dad with the 8-ish girl in row 4 and Mom with the two younger boys in row 3. The kids loved the ride, and pointed excitedly at their favorite characters as pointed out by Mom or Dad. Flounder and Nemo and Dory in the South Seas rooms were the big hit with the girl, and Stich was the big hit with the boys. The Finale' room elicited a comment from Mom to Dad of
"This is so gorgeous! They just do an amazing job with this stuff!", with Dad nodding in agreement as the new technicolor LED glitter-fest Finale' played out.
As we exited the building and our boats slowly crept along through the topiary gardens going back to the loading area, the boat behind us was stacked immediately behind. There was two older couples sitting in the first and second row of that boat, and I could easily hear their chatter about the ride. All the comments about the characters were complimentary, and the wives were talking about how
"Disneyland made that ride even cuter than it was!".
Exiting the ride with crowds of people from both sides of the unloading dock there was happy chatter and big smiles all around. The newly revamped and freshly rehabbed ride was clearly still
The Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed. Particularly after watching the little kids in the rows ahead of us, I'm convinced these changes were appropriate and appreciated by the casual visitor who probably has no idea who Mary Blair is. Enough said.
One other thing I noticed on this ride is that the brand new dolls in the
Spirit of America Farm scene are fully functioning Audio Animatronics. In the Farm scene on the left side of the flume there are three dolls dressed up like farmers. Their mouths move, their eyes blink, their heads nod and turn, etc. Unlike the assertion that Disney has been phasing out the AA dolls in favor of static dolls, these new American dolls are circa-1964 full Animatronics. If you haven't been on the ride you don't notice these easily as all of the YouTube video I've seen focuses more on the cowboys and Indians and Woody and Jesse toys on the opposite side of the flume.
The accusations of budget-cuts and allegedly missing dolls mentioned on other sites by well-meaning folks with foggy memories have been disproved by both YouTube and personal experience. Case closed.
