The article says they "have acquired the rights" like it's something that's just happened. Have they not had them since the early 70s?

My understanding is that they previously let them expire and have now got them back. Any time a studio acquires rights to something, they typically have to renew them every so often. For example, Walden Media lost the rights to the Narnia series.

Because The Black Cauldron is still a title Disney sells on DVD, I thought this would have been done on a regular basis since the 80s. I guess they don't need to do that to sell a movie already made?

Keep in mind, I don't work with film rights, but my understanding is that while every agreement can be different when rights are purchased, typically, film rights are just to make the movie(s) within a set period of time. Once a film is made, the studio can do what it wants within the scope of the agreement, such as re-release, archive it, etc. There are typically minimal restrictions of doing a sequel within the time, which is why it's important for a studio to pump out as much as it can before an agreement expires, since the value of the franchise could go way up in cost. I don't think there are any rules as to how short or long rights can last, since some can last seemingly forever, but someone else can chime in if they want.

Using Narnia as an example, since I'm more familiar with it, Disney's name is still on the first two films, Fox is on the third. Walden will still be given studio credit on future sales of the previously released films, even though they cannot make another one without a new agreement. Similarly, Fox will still be making the most money from the original Star Wars movies, even though all future releases are Disney (technically Lucasfilm, but basically the same thing).

For a short version of the above, it's complicated and the only ones who would know the real details would be those who have read the agreement(s).

I say this because I wonder whether Micechat might be going soft on Disney since the company at the 11th hour gave $250,000 (like a few pennies to you and me) to the efforts to restore Walt's Birthplace in Chicago. Timing on that deal was so neat. I did see they have a column by my old LP.com sparring partner Jon Nadelberg labeled as 'editorial' on the recent price gouging. Haven't read it yet.

MC is a shell waiting to spin itself apart. It's just a matter of time... the community that created them has all moved on in life and they've become more just a blog page. Their best hope is the regularity of their events if the people running them don't croak before they bring in any new blood to the org. When Andy actually grows up and gets a career job and personal life.. his column will fade too.

Total blasphemy... Sean Connery will always and forever be... Bond, James Bond! Roger Moore wasn't even a good cartoon caricature of Connery.

Look there is absolutely NO QUESTION that Sean Connery was the best James Bond EVER, Doctor No, Thunderball , Goldfinger three greatest Bond films EVER, But Roger Moore's villians were also some of the best ever like Drax in Moonraker...

Except not all bonds have charisma. Harrison ford as this special charisma that was destroyed by the sequels.
Just like how Connery, Brosnan and Craig are considered very appreciated in the Bond series. The others.. not so much.
Craig with his horrible acting and the scripts stink. Have not seen Spectre but it makes me sad that I had no desire to see a Bond film in the theater. Been burned by his others. #NoMoreBourneBond
