Roger Clemens...is he worth it?

I think the whole Clemens situation is so bizaare. Seriously, when will he retire? Last year he had the whole last game farewell thing with the Astros with the announcers having special flash backs on his career, then a standing ovation from the crowd, retirement gift giving and all of this stuff. Then HE COMES BACK! :brick:

He got the same treatment from the Yankees before that. I think he decided that people treated him so well when he retired that he might as well do it a few more times.

It's not just Rocket, though. Hell, I remember when Keith Jackson announced his "retirement" from broadcasting a few years ago. Retrospectives, good-bye sportswriter columns, reflections on what his career meant, and a special on-air statement after he finished his "last" game all followed.

Then a year or 2 later, he was back on the air.

And of course, the great Air Jordan may have started the whole thing, retiring twice from the Bulls and then a third time from the Wizards.

LOL:ROFLOL:

Some of these guys treat retirement like others treat marriage. They think nothing of going at it for three or four times and each time they keep the retirement gifts too.

Maybe it boils down to knowing nothing else in their lives...playing their game is all they've ever done. It must be hard to give it up, especially if they've been tops in their sport. Even if they stay connected thru broadcasting or coaching, it can't be as fulfilling as being one of the best players. They've made their name thru playing...anything short of that must suck for them.

Let's not forget that Jordan even made a go at baseball....ugh!

The Rocket is playing everyone....

Yes, the second coming of Christ manifested itself in the body of Roger Clemens in the Bronx yesterday afternoon...didn't you feel his presence? :ROFLOL:

Yanks are on a roll...only 10.5 games out. I wonder who feels more pressure to keep winning, the Yanks or Boston? The SOX know the Yanks can't gain on them as long as they are winning and if we've learned anything from history, the Sox have cooperated with the Yanks comebacks by relinquishing their lead with late season collapses. I am still holding out hope that this season will give us another classic finish with the Sox and Yanks. :sohappy:

Nobody in Boston has ruled out the Yanks by any means

Dice-K keeps getting the shaft  Aside from one game...he really has pitched great! (He just keeps getting a tad outpitched).

NY is too talented to be counted out just yet. If you have the Yanks at 30-31 and the Rays at 28-33, who do you think will finish with the better record when October rolls around?

Dice-K is good, but I think other pitchers are putting on their A-game face when going against him because of all the hype surrounding him. With all the hype that preceded him every throwing a pitch, you would think he wouldn't lose a game this year.

And speaking of losing a game, The Rocket has been worth his contract--so far. But one loss, he's not worth it and that ain't gonna happen. Pro-rated at $18 million? Unbelieveable!

Well...2 games in and he's not worth his contract. Now, do you reevaluate it given the fact that he pitched pretty well in his loss?

For $18 million, don't you think he shouldn't have given up those two runs? He's simply not worth the money. In the long run, I still don't see them overtaking Boston for the division, so they might sneak in the wild card. We'll see. It's still a long way to go and he's got a lot of pitching to do.

I agree...sure he's only 2 games deep...but as of right now he has only showed us that he's a .500 pitcher. For $18 million, you should be getting more than that. Wakefield and Tavarez are both .500 pitchers and together they don't make $18 million.

Look up the word "panic" in the dictionary and there you'll find a picture of George Steinbrenner.

As of today, June 18, here are the records for Boston and NY. What is your prediction for finish? How many games will each team win?

Boston: 44-24 (94 games left)
New York: 35-52 (95 games left)

Boston: 99-63 (assumes a 55-39 finish)
New York: 95-67 (assumes a 60-35 finish)

Hi Scotty!

I pretty much agree with your assessment although I think the combination win/loss will put these two teams within a game or two of first place at the end.

As far as Clemens is concerned...no pitcher can win when his team scores no runs. No one can ask more of a pitcher than to hold a team to two runs and hope your offense can score three runs.

Ya gotta figure that Clemens is no better at this point than he would be halfway thru the pre-season games. Clemens has his speed but it takes time for pitchers to master placement of the pitch.

Tramp, I completely agree with your statements about Rog.

The question was...is he worth the money. At this point in the season, was it worth spending the money on a Roger Clemens when, in the middle of June, he's only in his "pre-season" shape.

I will never take anything away from Roger Clemens...he is, questionably, the best pitcher of all time.

18 million for a complete season...I would say yeah...sure, it's worth it. You're basically only getting half of a season out of him though. To put it into perspective...if you got him for an entire season...is he worth 36 million?

Hmm...now he's a losing pitcher.

Granted, he's still in "warm-up" mode (we'll probably be hearing that until he wins two in a row (if he does that).

Did anybody expect this???

Honestly? Kinda, sorta. He won't finish as a losing pitcher, but he's no savior.

No, I don't think he'll finish as a losing pitcher either...I'm sticking with my 8-5 prediction...

(Plus, yesterday he only went 4 1/3 innings...not only was it a loss...but you also strained your bullpen)

Plus, I refuse to take anything away from the Rockies. They took 2/3 from us and swept the Yanks. I don't think it was because the Yanks and Sox are bad teams...I just think that the Rox came and played their A-games and deserved to win those 5 of 6.

The Yanks could close the gap over the next 3 or 4 days. The Sox play the Padres and the Yanks play the Giants who aren't playing so hot right now.

What did Tavarez sprinkle on his Wheaties Wednesday? He was lights out against the Braves. Bet you would like to have more of where that came from.

Tavarez is my favorite pitcher on the Sox to watch. He is always so animated and you're always on the edge of your seat because you never know when he'll give up the longball.

Everybody in Sox Nation hated him last year (myself included) because whenever he'd come in...he'd blow the game.

I think it was all because he was never on a regular schedule. He's on a schedule now and he's doing incredible. When your #5 pitcher can shut down the Braves like he did and is 5-4 on the year even though it seems he faces the opponent's ace on most of his starts...you're in pretty good shape.

Seriously, if you get the opportunity to watch him when he pitches...watch when there's a fielding play. He directs traffic LOL. (Especially when there's a double-play). He watches the ball past him...points to second base, crouches down and then points over to first...and never takes his eye off of the ball when it's in play.

Ever see him "bowl" the ball to first? For some reason (and he's done it a few times this year)...if the ball is hit to him...he starts running to first and then rolls the ball to Youk.
