Potty Training Help

We are heading down to WDW on 9/1. I have a son who is almost 2 1/2. We began potty training early in the summer. It wasn't going well. So about 2 weeks ago I said to myself "just forget it and wait until after vacation." Now he's been asking to go "______ in toilet" much to my surprise, but he doesn't always make it. He more or less tells me he has to go after he goes. So I've been keeping him in pull ups during the mornings.

For those of you who have been training boys before trips, what did you do? Did you keep up with it? I'm not sure if I should keep trying and I'm now getting nervous about packing. I'm not sure if I should just pack diapers, just pull ups or a little of both.

I tried a search and couldn't find out much.

I would pack both. My daughter was just potty training when we went to animal kingdom one year and the loud automatic flushes freaked her out, she wouldn't go on one of their toilets for the rest of the day.

My daughter is about 75% of the way done and we are going down in 2 weeks. I've been stressing out trying to figure out what to do also while down there. Here at home she is in underwear all day, she hasn't worn a pullup in about a month. But she does have accidents when going #2 and only has done that on the potty a handful of times. I am trying to decide if I should just put her in pullups while in the parks so if she does have an accident it won't be as gross of a cleanup or if I should just keep with the underwear and hope for the best. I told her as long as she keeps going #2 on the potty she will get a special surprise while at Disney so I'm hoping she will be 100% done in the next 2 weeks. Godd luck with your guy, I would definately encourage him if he wants to go and maybe just bring pullups with you.

This is a great thread! I have 4 kids - 2 daughters that are 16 and 14 and they weren't too diffucult to potty train. By their 3rd birthday they were ready and just started going. Well now I have 2 little boys one who is 4+ and one who is 2 1/2. My youngest son has more desire to try then my 4 yr old. We have tried tried and tried. He just doesnt like the potty. He went once in the toliet. Since then he tells me its not working mommy, or its broken Mommy. Then 5 mins after we leave the bathroom he smiles at me and says its working mommmy and i went in my diaper. I feel like I am at my wits end. I would love for him to be potty trained when we come out in decemeber I just don't know what the "special trick" is. If anyone has had a diffucult potty training experince I would love for some advice. I would love to come to the world with my son all potty trained!:)

Having potty trained 2 boys and guidence on 2 grandsons, you don't want to just give up but be prepared to have pull-ups and know that there will be accidents. Having him ask to go really is about half the battle. I would try to see as much as possible if he seems to be settling into a schedule, you know like an half hour to an hour or so after breakfast and note the times; you just might see a pattern. If you do see a time pattern emerge, then try to get him into the bathroom at home and on the trip about 5 minutes or so beforehand. This could really aid him in figuring out the body sensation of having a full bladder before it gets to accident time.
I have also heard that children can be frightened by the noise that the auto toilets make especially if they flush while the child is on the seat. One suggestion that I have heard is to take a post-it note and put it over the sensor and then remove it after your child is finished on the way out the door.
My oldest son was just starting to get the hang of things drinking from a cup when an accident put him in the hospital for 4 days. Due to wanting to monitor his fluid intake the hospital put him back on a bottle - oh what a fight that was to get him back into a cup.
Best of luck and enjoy your trip.

OMG! I had not even thought about that. Those may freak him out too. He hasn't even tried a public restroom yet. Nor has he asked to use one outside of the house (or Grandparents house). When we go out I always change him into diaper. So now I'm thinking I just answered my own question.

Maybe I'll just bring a handful of pull ups for around the hotel and stick with the diapers when we are out.

We took our little man to Disneyland Paris when he was potty training, we kept him in pull ups, we still took him for lots of toilet breaks and when he did have an accident it didn't matter so much. It was also far less stressful when standing in line.

For the little one who shows no interest in potty training what about letting him choose his own potty, you can get some real fancy ones now, also what about trying him without pull ups or nappies, then he might realise it isn't comfortable when he wets himself. Don't know if that will help, they're all different, good luck anyway

I thought I would share what I did with both my kids because it worked wonderfully. I made what I called the "Potty Prize Box" and filled it with inexpensive toys from the dollar store. I made "tickets" and everyone time they went they got a ticket. I put how many tickets each prize was and at the end of the day they traded their tickets for toys. It excited them so much that they paid more attention because they wanted those tickets and had fewer accidents, mostly just at night so we used pullups.

With the automatic flushers, have some small post it notes in your bag or cover the sensor with toilet paper...not really anything to do with the actual potty training, but still...

My daughter was newly trained when we went last Nov. The automatic flushers scare her to the point she will leap off the toilet into my arms. My mother just happen to watch one of the cleaning women put one of those mickey stickers over the sensor...you know the circular ones they seem to hand out constantly on property. We started using those to cover the motion sensor and it became "mickey's potty" and was much more fun to use the potty after that. I actually keep random stickers in my purse now to do the same thing in public while we aren't at Disney.

I also highly recommend the dvd "Potty Power" for anyone with difficult kids. After the opening theme song my daughter pulled down her underpants and sat on the potty...

I'll look into that one. We have Bear in Big Blue House one which is cute. DS actually broke his Elmo one 2 days ago when he tried to shove it into dvd player with the tray was shut.

I used a book called Toilet Training in Less than a Day. Laugh if you want to, but it worked for my son. Before that, he'd just look at the potty chair like it was possessed of an evil force (remember the potty training in the sequel to Look Who's Talking?). After four hours with the method from the book, he was using the potty voluntarily by himself. After our four-hour session, he had four "accidents" and two of those were in the bed. It really worked for us and I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in potty training in a more headache-free environment.

Wolf brand chili with beans can help.

:animwink:

Probably too much!

Don't give up on the training even though it will be a hassle. You'll just have to start all over again when you get home. Maybe a special prize could be some "big kid" underpants with Mickey on them if your child does really well at Disney.

As to the 4 year old who has no interest-maybe try putting some underpants on him so he can see how much more comfortable they are than a diaper. You don't want to push training, but school is probably coming up pretty soon and I think a newly trained kid would be more prone to accients than one who's been at it a while.

I have a two and a half year old boy who is almost all the way there with #1 and has no interest in #2. At home he wears underwear most of the time (he usually waits until naptime to ________ in his pull up) but when we go in September I plan on using pull ups most of the time. There is just so much going on that it's hard to always remeber to go potty. Plus some of the rides are long and there is no way off (two of my nieces have had accidents on spaceship earth).

Honestly, I would just go with whatever is easiest for you!

My DD was potty training our last trip at the beginning of June. We had started training about 3 weeks before we left and were still having trouble getting her to go #2 in the potty. I kept her in underwear anyway, because it was just no big deal to me if she had a few accidents. I packed 2 changes of clothes, wipes, Clorox wipes (to sanitize the toilet seats - a girl thing) and a small pair of nail scissors each day. The only accident she had was, of course, in the middle of our lunch at CRT. That's when the scissors came in really handy. I just cut the underpants off of her and threw them away, like a diaper. Otherwise we were fine. She wasn't scared of the toilets flushing at all.

Since this is your vacation too, I'd go with whatever was most relaxing and fun for all of you. Have a GREAT trip!

Boy do I not miss those potty training days!!! We went to Disney when my son was just starting to potty train, and I too was nervous about the whole wetting himself. I have him wear the pull up that look exactly like underwear and thankfully he was able to make it to the restrooms eveytime without any accidents. As for the public restrooms, if it is an issue, I blieve you can go to the childcare rooms to use the restrooms. Also, I would just make him try to go when ever there is a bathroom near by. Good luck!

We were taking my son to Disney for the first time the summer he was 2 1/2 almost 3. One day in June (we were going at the end of July) I said no more diapers we aren't taking any to Disney. I didn't bother with pull ups because you might as well put a diaper back on them, and he had a few accidents but after a few days we were in business! He would occasionally have #2 accidents (maybe one a week) mainly when we would be outside playing and he didn't want to stop to go to the potty. So once I caught on to that we just started taking breaks every so often. It can be frustrating, and it does take patience (and sometime some cleaning) but it's well worth it if you just cut them off diapers cold turkey! In about a month and a half we were diaper free and off to Disney!

My grandson recently turned 2 1/2 and will go in the potty a few times a day, but that's mostly at daycare. Hopefully he'll be trained before our trip in January. My daughter keeps saying she's not worried about it because no one ever went to college still in diapers. Both of my daughters were trained before the age of 2 though.

My niece took her daughter when she was 2 and potty trained. I kept telling her to always carry a change of clothes just in case. One day at the AK, her daughter took a nap wearing a onesie with pants. When she woke up she immediately wet herself. It wet everything she had on, so we had to go in a store and buy underwear, and an outfit. It was an expensive (at Disney prices) lesson for my niece. So always, until your child is trained quite a while, carry a change of clothes with you.
