New Contemporary tower art

Jer and Ozzy like their buildings curvy.

I don't mind the building itself, but the placement of it does seem a little awkward

Curves are nice. Sharp angles too...but the Contemporary is just ugly inside and out, I've personally never cared for the design (the concept is cool though).

They probably want to charge a pretty penny for its location and views.

Stockholders should be happy since they must have saved a ton of money by just using blueprints for every other run of the mill hotel at any oceanfront resort. Let me guess the pool will be located in the center of that building.

Still not liking the new building. But Disney didn't ask me (why not? they should really be consulting all of us on huge decisions like this).

The thread title immediately made me think of the Mary Blair mural and I was going to have to do some serious protesting if they were even thinking of ripping out or covering that beautiful work of art. Five-legged goat FTW!

As much as I do not like the new building (architecturally, placement, DVC, etc), I'm sure I'll really want to stay in a Contemporary DVC Studio when they open. I love the Contemporary and if they model this building's interior design after the Contemporary's, then I'm in. I hate to admit that, but I'm just in love with the Contemporary, so I'll do it.

But it still looks like a generic Miami condo complex or an airport parking garage and still has no place next to the beautiful a-framed Contemporary, a landmark of WDW from day one. Everyone knows the Contemporary; "you know, the one the monorail goes through!?".

And this has been your "Kristen is up way too early and does not want to go to work" Contemporary DVC rant/post.

Looks REALLY out of place...I don't know why they would put another high rise there....with all of the cost associated with it and other supposed DVC rehabs, why not just put up a new property instead of this? It is a monstrosity that really takes away from the orignal Contemporary tower. And with this and the AKL DVC opening, I just think it is really unnecessary.

I echo what others have already posted, I think that it fits enough without blending in. I'm not an architect nor do I carry degrees in design, but I can't think of another building to put there. If they put up another A-Frame, it wouldn't stand out and I think THAT would compete with the existing tower. This tower is different without being too different. As someone else posted, the lines created by the balconies carry over to the A-Frame and the "oberservation deck" (or whatever stick out on top :) ) matches the top of the contemp. I even like the juxtaposition of the sharp lines of the original against the curves of the new tower. I'm not arguing about whether they should build there or if it should be DVC, but if they are going to do it, I do think that is the best option. Just my two cents  .

The Contemporary will become a double planet system. The barycenter now will lie firmly between the two towers, not in the original tower.

The contrast between the two styles is comprehensible. Circular vs. linear. I think the exterior, though, of the new tower needs some sort of extra decorative element. With the original tower, you have the two concrete "A"s at either end which provide the building with a dramatic definition. The new tower just looks too generic and lacks a similar architectural element. The "cap" on top is OK, it's just not enough.

But this will certainly and dramatically alter the Magic Kingdom landscape. It's been some time since construction of this height was commenced in the Seven Seas/Bay Lake vicinity...

Here`s a radical idea - since the building, when taken in isolation, isn`t nessecarily bad, how about put it somewhere more remote and build some nice new tennis courts or similar north of the Contemporary, instead of having it next to the most visited theme park in the world?

Oh, my mistake. It wouldn`t make as much money.

hey I have no problem with Disney making a lot of money. There's a reason Disney can afford $100,000,000 thrill rides and Six Flags is only building cheapo Wiggles World at a handful of parks this year...

I don't have a problem with the design (they are even keeping in with the "appliance" theme, toaster, and now air cleaner), and even the sides match well with the original building. I don't even have a problem with the placement of the building......BUT.....I do have a problem with it being as tall or taller than the original. If this is an ancillary building, an add-on if you will, it shouldn't be as tall as the main tower. I wouldn't have a problem with it being 4,5, even 6 or 7 stories, but not the same height or taller than the original. It's not going to look right. I'm not buying the "they're supposed to be twins now, with the focus in between the two" either. The main hotel should be the focus. It's not like the Boardwalk where it all blends together as one big building.

This may be the first step in a complete Contemp redux. Build this tower then rebuild the main building to match. All I can say is - if so - THANK GOODNESS THAT UNFORTUNATLY UGLY PILE WOULD BE GONE! There, I said it. A few others have too -- but the Contemp is DUMPY looking. Here's for a re-imagineering. Oh, and that Asian resort looked REALLY COOL!

As long as they aren't referred to as the Male/Female towers.

However, my favorite restaurant is California Grill... thus, my only complaint is that it will be harder to get a table.

I like the California Grill too. It seems like the new building would really kill the view from there. :fork:

Always interesting how much polarity there is in the responses here to such changes.

the new building will not block the views of the MK from the existing building. It is located far enough east of the MK that it won't be b/t the existing tower and the park.

Not that I think the new tower is pretty. I agree that I looks like a parking garage or bad Miami Condos. Seriously did anyone really think the Contempary was ever anything appealing to look at? They are just replaceing an ugly building with a bigger ugly building.
