New Contemporary tower art

Hmmm...I'll reserve judgment until I see it when it's built. I don't think it'll look horrible at all. My only concern is the coloring of the building vs. the coloring of the current tower blending well.

Is this a real piece of art??

It looks photoshoped to me and disney's concept art is usually painted.

This thing looks disgusting and worse than the epcot wand.

It may be a piece of art from the architect firm that Disney is working with to build the new tower given the computerized appearance to the concept art. An overhead view and straight on view of this proposed plan were available on the site of this architect as a future project (I cannot remember the name of the company) a few months back before it was taken off. The question I still have is whether this is the final approved plan or one of several working ideas for the new tower. I sincerely hope that there are some modifications to the plan as seen in these concept pics. I don't think it will be hideous, but I don't believe it "plusses" the resort or the surroundings much.

I just think it is too big. Not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also from a practical point of view. Do the sales for DVC continue to be that amazing that with Saratoga Springs finishing their last remaining buildings AND the new AKL DVC that a tower that looks to be as large as the Contemporary will sell-out too? At what point will DVC start to take away from Disney's ability to fill their standards, if it hasn't already?

You know what it means, as well as old contemporary does? More color. Give it some dark blues, and maybe some silver trim so it'll fit the design of the new Tomorrowland. Right now its looking like a large slab of concerete.

I can see that along the beach anywhere here in FL. Also, that seems like it would be visible from many points in MK.

I know the disney people are good, and don't jump into such things without a lot of planning, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

However, that said, my initial reaction allows me to use my favorite emoticon...:hurl:

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.
I like it!

At least it has some curves... unlike that circa 1971 Westinghouse toaster. :brick:

It looks more contemporary than what's already there...

I have never been that drawn to the hotel to begin with, so I'm pretty apathetic about the expansion. However, my favorite restaurant is California Grill... thus, my only complaint is that it will be harder to get a table.

Does anyone else find this picture really difficult to picture in reality - these two just DON'T look right together. I think some will agree - the new tower does make the current A-frame look older. Now don't get me wrong - I like the Contemporary and I think it's still worthy of its status as a Deluxe resort, but putting this gargantuan thing right next to it just takes away some of the current building's charm (which I think it still has lots of, despite its age).

Look at the photo again - isn't your eye drawn to the new tower first? That's what I fear will happen when it's actually built. These buildings just DON'T compliment each other, and I don't think a new coat of paint for the current building will do the trick.

Nothing new....it's just a spruced up shot of the same conception art that leaked out 9 months ago.
It`s totally new; upto now all we`ve had are a small elevation and orthographic prjection. This image shows how the finished building could look in its surroundings.

I agree, whilst of course it is Photoshopped, it is a bit amateur; the actual photo was taken at the worst time of day (the camera facing the sun) - to be totally accurate the new building should be shaded like the A Frame; this would place most of the new tower in darkness. Here`s a rough verison I `shopped with correct shadowing. As an aside, the roof tower detail does try to match the glass atrium skylights of the 1991 convention center.

Ok good news and bad news. First the good news. My heart stopped when I read your title as I thought they were replacing Mary Blair's wonderful mural in the concourse. Now the bad news. This design totally looks out of place next to the wonderful A-frame of the contemporary. It would be an ok hotel in its own right but there is nothing elegant about it compared to the wonderful original contemporary design.

Big thumbs down from me. I'm not even certain its better than the North Wing which was there before. They certainly didn't look contemporary in any way so I wasn't upset to hear they were leaving (in fact they looked like a bad Motel 6 to me) but at least they were understated and didn't take away from the grandeur of the Contemporary. This just seems to be a garish half circle rising in the air and attempting to distract attention away from the design of the main hotel.

Your thoughts are being skewed due to nostalgic reasons.

The A-Frame has been done before...there is nothing special aside from the shear size of it. Look at the DoubleTree near Downtown Disney...it's the same exact design (aesthetically) as the Contemporary.

Coming from an architectural background...I will say that this is pretty nice. They carried the lines from the original and the "scale" of the original. The A-Frame is a basic contemporary shape...as is the North Wing...but it's the reciprocal of it. The A-Frame has sharp, crisp lines whereas the new North Tower has the exact opposite. I think if you were to see this from the other side, you'd think differently. Even the decorative "cap" on top carries the same form as the original.

I really like this design and am very glad they didn't just build another A-Frame next to it. The only thing that I think would've been a better form/shape would've been an inverted A-Frame. That would've been truly spectacular.

That is due to the poor shadowing. There really isn't any shadowing done so the new tower looks to be brighter which draws your eyes to it.

Coming from the TTA...the A-Frame will be the first thing you notice...leaving the MK...the A-Frame will be in sight the most...

When you're on the monorail...the new tower will be directly in front of you as you leave the MK...you can only see out of the sides of the monorail (unless you're in the cockpit). The only time you'll see the new tower is when the monorail turns to enter the A-Frame.

I have a question. I haven't read all the other replies so sorry if I missed this. If you have a room in the tower on the bay side in that cornerm how much of the new building will you see instead of the bay? We stayed on that side last time we were there and loved it. I want to go back and stay there but not if it will take away from the view of the water.

I agree. It's a nice contrast and even transitions between the sharp angled Contemporary and the circular Space Mountain....notice the curving monorail line as well....I think it fits in there quite nicely and should ADD a lot of character not only to the resort complex but to Tomorrowland as well.

I just hope they give the Contemporary a nice lighter coat of paint to match the DVC tower.
