I'm all for DVC rooms at the Contemporary, but if that is the proposed building, it is really ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb. I was hoping they would build something that doesn't overpower the main tower. Wow -- I can't get over how terrible looking that drawing is...like someone said, it looks like a hilton.

They've done such a good job with the boardwalk, beach club, wilderness lodge villas. Ugh! I hope this rumor isn't true. :hurl:

I kinda like it !

It certainly looks better than the rotting Holiday Inn corpses that it's taking the place of.

The reasons why the Contemporary was considered so contemporary in 1971 was ... the fact that the rooms were completed at a separate location, moved to WDW, lifted on a crane, and slid into place. That, in itself, is pretty cool, but I guess instead of doing that again, it's easier (and cheaper) to do an on-site refurb of the rooms.

Just for the record, the Contemporary was never designed nor intended to have the rooms removed, refurbed, and reinstalled in the manner they were originally installed. (Same goes for the Poly.) Numerous reasons why: settling of the building, plumbing & electrical connections, exterior work, etc.

I'm not sure yet what I think of the new building. I will have to say that I think that graphic is a bad one. The poor lighting on the Contemporary, and the perspective which makes the new wing look much larger, both make it look worse than it otherwise would. But being a DVC member and having a 3-year-old, I can't wait to stay there!

That's contrary to everything that's ever been said about the subject.

meh...I don't really know what to think. Its design is nothing spectacular and I'm not sure how well it would fit in with the surrounding area, but I'm hopeful for that section on the top... observation area or restaurant? I don't like the spiral part the left side of the building. Sort of reminds me of the parking ramps at Tampa International.

That's not true. It's a common misconception but there has never been anything stated officially that they ever planned on removing the rooms to build them somewhere else. Once they were in there they were in there. There's no removing them.

Yeah, this is the Rumor That Will Not Die. John Hench is on record as saying that the notion the the Contemporary was made to by taken apart for renovations is false. Of course there's also common sense, which says that dismantling a hotel and rebuilding it are going to be many times more expensive, and slower, than just renovating the normal way.

May I remind everyone that it is just an artist's rendering. I will reserve my judgement until it is done. I don't think you should judge it before it has even been built. Maybe it will look alot better in person. This picture doesn't really show alot.

Look at how the round stucture contrasts so much on the more angled and older one. I remember reading in an Imagineering book how the imagineers take extra precaution not to juxtapose different styles of architecture. I think it is displeasing to the eyes and hinder's the atmosphere around the building.

Now come on. :animwink: It's one thing when someone says you shouldn't review a ride based on a rendering, but this is a building. Assuming the picture is to scale and all, I think it's enough for someone to express an opinion on. I mean, whoever approved this building for Disney had to do so based on renderings. Also, this isn't the only picture of the new building out on Screamscape (and other places), and they all match up to this one. It's clear that this is going to be a C-shaped building, a little taller than the original Contemporary, and with a standard high-rise condo look. If someone doesn't like the thought of that, they aren't going to like the finished building, even if this rendering is off in a few details.

Has no one else but mevthought about what this will look like from MK?

The original Contemp was designed to fit into the look of Tomorowland. Now that Tomorrowland has been rehabed the Contemp doesn't fit into the theame anymore. Now we have another awkward building to look at from the park. :(

Wasn't the whole idea of "The Florida Project" (WDW) was to be able to transport guests to a magical land without seeing outside stuff like in DL? :veryconfu

Not a fan of the look either. Hopefully its just the concept art that puts the new building in a bright light with a lighter white appearance while putting the original tower in dark shadows that makes them look so out of place next to each other. The architecture of the new building by itself is quite nice actually and perhaps a bit more 'contemporary' by today's standards, but the curves in this building next to the straight lined A frame of the original seem to clash quite a bit.

Is this a real piece of art??

It looks photoshoped to me and disney's concept art is usually painted.

This thing looks disgusting and worse than the epcot wand.

The difference between seeing these buildings from the Magic Kigdom and the situation at Dl is that the Contemporary is part of that 'magical land' and is not a seedy motel or gas station whose sign looms over Tomorrowland.

I too have wondered how such a huge new Tower will look from the Magic Kingdom. The Contemporary now is only visible from wihtin Tomorrowland, as originally intended, and when crossing the hub from Liberty Square into Tomorrowland (which became more apparent ever since the hub's large trees were removed in 2003). The new tower will be to the left of the current tower and may not be very visible at all from inside the park, hopefully.

What I dislike about the proposed site and plan is that the view of the Magic Kingdom and Space Mountain will effectively be blocked when on the Bay Lake side of the Contemporary. As a frequent guest at Fort Wilderness, I still enjoy that first glimpse of the castle and Space Mountain shortly after leaving the boat dock. That view will be missed.
