New attraction for AK?

One of these "things" wouldn't happen to be "fix" DinoLand USA and MI - would it @marni1971 ?

I hate the constant comments to "fix" or "change" Dinorama. Love it or hate it, at least it's something. There is so much unused land in DAK and such a need for increased capacity that I'd hate to see them replace something that is functional when they really need to add more stuff. Once they build about 6-8 new attractions and add a nighttime show, then I think it would make sense to spend time and money fixing Dinorama.

The last think DAK needs is to get rid of 1/3 the existing rides including the only ride in the park that is available for people who can't handle thrill rides/bumpiness.

Note: I don't particularly care for Dinorama one way or the other, but DAK has much bigger issues.

They really could put those pixies all over the park...with a different one doing something different with different kinds of animals. And "Pixie Hollow" could be built under the Tree of Life where the Bug's Life thing is. To me that would be much better than having the bugs in there.

Wow. I can see the concept of having Tink and fairies in the park (not like it though, they fit far better in Fantasyland) but why would you want to get rid of Tough to be a Bug? It's a great film and fits so seeminglessly in with DAK. Especially since insects are pretty much underrepresented in zoos -- and are, honestly, too "icky" for most people to want to care about, so the film is a great way for insects to have a role in DAK.

In the same way they have the Lion King film in the Land, or Nemo and Friends at the Living Seas acting as hosts to explain the environment to kids, it seems to me they could do something similar with Tinker Bell at Animal Kingdom, since she is one of their most recognizable characters and the films all deal with nature and animals

Sure. But since Disney has dozens of films that are actually involving animals why not use one them instead? Realistically, Rafiki (or Simba) would work fine in such a role, but you could easily have Bambi or Chip and Dale, etc. and it would work. Heck, any of Mickey or his friends would make sense since they are, y'know, anthropomorphic animals.

If Disney wants to add more franchises to DAK, there are a ton of better options than the fairy line.

Ok, that's not exactly what I'm talking about, but what I'm saying is I think a big part of the reason they want to put Avatar in Animal Kingdom is to try and give the place some kind of identity, which it doesn't really have

Huh? If anything, DAK is the strongest Disney park in terms of identity. It's about animals and nature. Asia? Animals. Africa? Animals and nature expeditions (yeah, the yeti is a stretch, but it's in that realm). Dinosaurs? They are animals. Nemo? Animal. Bug's life? A film full of animals.

How does the park not fit the theme? And Avatar, a film that couldn't be more over the top about conservation and appreciating nature and having beautiful/interesting flora and fauna easily fits in with the theme.

I don't get how anyone could argue that DAK has a theme problem.

Ah! I get it now! That show already uses the theme of the supersensory, skilled hunter platypus having an image of a lazy creature. :lightbulb:

What can I say? I don't really watch Disny Channel cartoons. I'm a Disney parks fan for their history, world culture, technology, and natural history. I'm happy these traditional Disney subjects aren't tossed aside in the parks nowadays to make way for homogenised cartoon tie-ins everywhere and....wait, bah!

I'm with you on that train of thought... but P&F are the exception... I'm sorry but they got some funny material. The kids are watching it in the van and my husband and I are laughing at the one liners from the front of vehicle while driving. A lot of the humour is geared towards an older generation (with the traditional slap stick humour thrown in for the kids).

And I would love to see Platypus in AK (hey, the could sell Perry merch nearby ;) )!

Know what would be awesome? More Animals.
Seriously, they're down to 5 tigers now and the girls they have are 15 years old.

Cool animals like Pandas or Penguins or something else that could be a headliner attraction, none of this zebra stuff. Unless you're mixing zebras and cheetahs....
you come back and you get 7 likes. Way to go.

I agree, I would like to see sea animals. Penguins with a show. A real dolphins show would be nice. You could move that so called "Living Seas" from Epcot. Yes it would be similar to Sea World but hopefully with a Disney touch.

I see this place hasnt changed a bit while I was gone. Same arguments, same criticisms, same fanboiz who insist on only their view of the park.

Only difference I see is that the criticisms become more and more valid with each and every visit I make. I figure Ive spent close to and entire year of my life visiting WDW... kind of Sad if you think about it.

Oi!

The platypus is one of the world's deadliest killers. Ferocious hunters!

Platypussies hunt by closing their eyes, blocking their ears, and using the Force. The great wizard that dwells in the sandy desert of the Outback, Oibi-Wan Kenoibi, describes this Force as an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

The Force is strong in these ones  :

Platypussies? Is that the next Bond movie?

I agree. I would like to see water buffalo added to Kilimanjaro Safaris too.
Yeah, one more vote from me too for 'Yesazuh, please'. Nothing wrong with giving people animals. Animals are like movies, pretty much everybody loves them. So if you have a movie park, or an animal park, just deliver us those goods. No need to be afraid DAK will be a 'zoo', no more than DHS needs to fear being a 'cinema'.

Buffalo are awesome.

Hmmm....let me see if I can find some entire episodes then. The thing is, the show looks a bit geared towards very young kids, so I never really bothered.

Maybe I need to give it a shot!

Young kids? Not really, I think it's aimed at a 6-12 year old type range, but there is humor that adults can appreciate that flies over the kids' heads. P&F is actually quite good.

No the reason why they want to add anything is to keep the park running later than 6pm most nights when the Animals have to go sleep.

The dedication of Animal Kingdom has always talked about Real, Imaginary and Extinct - Avatar is essentially using the Imaginary hook as the ways to get it into the AK with the underlying conservation message of the whole park.

AK theme is pretty straight forward does it feature a real animal? Imaginary animal? Extinct animal? If the answer is no to all 3 questions than place the idea in the bin and start again. Again not vague to anyone who can read a road sign - and say: "Hey that is Animal Kingdom, that must have rides featuring Animals!"

It don't take a genius to work it out...

The problem with the theme is unfortunately there's nothing unique about it, "a theme park with live animals" has been done before, Busch Gardens in Tampa has that, so does Six Flags Great Adventure. If you want to see live animals you've got a lot options, and if you're in WDW and you want to go on rides you've got 4 parks to choose from, but if you've only got time for 3 parks which one are you going to skip? Probably Animal Kingdom

What does Animal Kingdom have? a river rapids ride, like every other theme park on the planet, a mountain with a roller coaster, pretty sure they got a couple of those, and a dinosaur ride that goes real fast, as opposed to the Universe of Energy which is the dinosaur ride that goes real slow

There's nothing bad about Animal Kingdom, it's beautiful, but there's nothing real special about it either, most people don't feel the need to spend $80 to see it, and it doesn't really matter what the dedication on the door says if people aren't bothering to go to the door to read it. And I don't think "keeping it open passed 6pm" is the problem, most people call it "half day park" now, not having enough stuff to do from 9 to 6 is the problem

So what is Avatar? In the eyes of the current management it is "something unique and special" it is a signature attraction that will get people in the door. In my opinion Avatar fits AK about as well as Nemo fits the Living Seas, "kinda sorta" if you want to argue about it... go ahead, but why is Nemo there? because there are a lot of aquariums in the world, how do they make their aquarium special? add Nemo, he'll get people in the door. That's why Nemo is in the Living Seas, and that's why Avatar is coming to town... PERIOD.

And as ironic as it is that I have to write this on a Disney message board... A lot people go to Disney World, because THEY LIKE DISNEY STUFF, I happen to be one of those people, and I think if they are going to add something to Disney's Animal Kingdom... maybe it should be something DISNEY RELATED? Because half their films are about princesses and the other half ARE ABOUT ANIMALS, I'm not going to list them all, but there's a lot of them

If you love Avatar and the Avengers, that's great, I liked both those movies too, but I really don't have any burning desire to go see them in person. If they do become theme park rides, I hope for your sake they don't suck, I personally don't care one way or the other. I would rather see Tinker Bell, or Jiminy Cricket, or anybody who makes me feel like I am in fact in Walt Disney World and not Mall of America, some big warehouse full of other people's crap, which unfortunately for me is what it slowly seems to be turning into

Nemo at least has some brand recognition and lasting appeal, especially considering it came out nearly a decade ago. Avatar, meanwhile, came out 3 years ago now, and I'm not hearing much buzz about it. That doesn't bode well for an addition to DAK.

I'm not saying I agree with Nemo being added to the Seas, but at least it was something that has as much relevance and appeal now, especially to families with children, as it did back when it opened.
