MM+ Why we can't have nice things.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
so I don't want the best for Disney?

I accept the way the company is run...it is a business and they are making money...lots of money.... that doesn't mean I think they should/could do a lot better in the Orlando parks

Oh, I get it. Apparently Disney used to be a charity that blessed us with their offerings.

Between 2010 and 2011 (when Harry Potter opened) Islands of Adventure added 1.7 Million visitors. Between 2011 and 2012 they held on to that increase and added about another 300,000 visitors without having built anything new.

Fad audience, once the fad wears off...

With the exception of Potter, its the same Universal/IoA parks people only visited some of the time.

MM+ is a long term infrastructure upgrade that will pay for itself by positive guest word of mouth once fully implemented.
MyMagic+ will never pay for itself by word-of-mouth.

MyMagic+ will be advertised heavily just like Universal will advertise Diagon Alley heavily. Heck, Universal was advertising the Wizzarding World of Harry Potter for 2 years and that had tremendous word-of-mouth.

As I recall, Disney has about a $1 Billion advertising budget annually. For practically any consumer product, advertising sells.

MyMagic+ was advertised during the Disney Christmas Day Parade.

No one should be surprised when Disney MyMagic+ ads start appearing on TV.

Even today in the Information Age, word-of-mouth only goes so far.

Ok. Lets see...

Orlando (and surrounding offerings within a few hours drive) vs Anaheim (and surrounding offerings within a few hours drive)

Historical sites (significantly better in California)

The list goes on. There are many reasons to go to the Orlando area, but I wouldn't go so far as to say there is "more to do there" than the area surrounding Disneyland...and, it's highly debatable if there's even more to do at Disneyworld as a result.

Unfortunately it takes a couple of hours from Orlando to St.Augustine the oldest town in America ... no real contest.

That's true, but you also don't get the amazing spaces one gets at WDW. Sure, there are many differences between the Orlando parks, some very good for WDW, some very good for Comcast. However, I don't think Uni can compete with the escapism that at least I get when I'm staying at WDW. I don't just look at the 4 parks as all there is. Nor do I look at the resort I may be staying in alone, though last trip is was in exceptional shape and I felt I was treated very well. But the space in between as well was great and I don't see me getting this as I head closer into Orlando at Universal.

Assuming that is Fort Wild I guess it is a good thing they canned the DVC incarnation that was supposed to to start building there in 2012 the size of Wild Lodge and make the entire back half a paved slab.

no excuse...fact
you have to compare apples to apples
1971 was a WAY different time
How different was it really though? They dont have to keep up with WOL or the upper level of Imagination anymore. Odyssey is rarely open. The two big draws (Soarin and TT) replaced older attractions so that cancels out trying to add additional rides as a reason. Communicore/Innoventions are WAY less busssier than they once were. They dont have the double decker buss riding around either so thats another subtraction. In reality they have only added a few restaurants and M&G's. It seems it may have cost much more to operate EPCOT back in the day than it does now. I could be missing something though.

Well it's a space between the WL and FW and perhaps that is where someone contemplated building, but I look at it as a wonderful space. Not as a place we're lucky to have as some fool once planned to build here. No reason to diminish its value because someone had a hair brained idea, I guess we can also say "hey good, someone else kicked that idea to the can where it belonged."

Hey now, your fancy math excludes the pueblos of New Mexico....but I digress, go on with your line of dialog.

What? In California the few historical sites that I decided to visit Hearst Castle was definitely a favorite however that is northern California. You do realise that St.Augustine is a couple of hours drive away from Orlando, you do realise it is in the state of Florida? You do realise it is the oldest town in America?

Would you say that the potential of something being a fad would be an argument against using ips in giant theme parks? I think that if something is very well done, like, WWoHP or Splash Mountain, the ip is only important for the first 5 years or so of the things existence (to get people to experience the new thing initially). After that, repeat business is largely driven by the quality of the theme park experience. I should note, that time of Harry Potter's peak popularity has passed. However, I would think that it will be part of our cultural lexicon for the rest of our lives.

MyMagic+ was advertised during the Disney Christmas Day Parade.
And advertised heavily. They've got Neil Patrick Harris and Samantha Brown hawking it. Wonder what they paid Sam to talk up the FPP. More money down the drain.

They're so desperate, trying to convince the customers that we want this.

It was a really good parade this year! But the wristband enthusiasm was pathetic. I may have literally rolled my eyes when one woman said she went with the red and white polka dot Minnie band...like people would be sitting on their sofas saying, "OMG! I want one!"

Nobody books a vacation because they want a wristband, for crying out loud. Show them rides, shows and good-looking parks!!!

I'm only speaking of how a "town" is defined. And yes, I do believe St Augustine is recognized as the oldest town. By no means am I stating you are incorrect, just that how a town is defined is debated and I'll say that other "settlements" are older than St Augustine.

At Uni you don't need busses.
Buses are not needed at Disneyland Resort either.

There was a point when DLR aficionados felt Disneyland was starved for cash, falling apart, a shell of its former self.

Burbank got serious about fixing their home park and pumped billions into it.

Now, many think Disneyland and DCA are better than ever.

It just took cash. Loads of it.

Extrapolate the money spent to fix DLR's 510 acres over WDW's 25,000 acres and you'll have a better appreciation as to why much of WDW is in the state that it's in.

Don't forget that it used to be possible to have a parade around WS lagoon. Now it is too cluttered. I think we were discussing WDW as a whole though.

Technically, I'm using the wrong terminology - the oldest continually occupied city. :p

This is both the blessing and the curse of WDW. All that space allows for areas like your picture and so many others that you will never get at Uni or for that matter DLR. The spread out resorts with fantastic grounds and the preserved natural areas are as much a part of WDW as the parks.

That blessing of space is also a curse. All that infrastructure. Buses, monorails and boats to operate and maintain. Highways to pave and repair, bridges, tunnels, loads of landscaping. It's all expensive to operate and maintain. While Universal or DLR can focus virtually all of their resources on the 2 parks and rides/attractions WDW has so much additional infrastructure to worry about. As a visitor it's great to stay someplace like Wilderness Lodge or even Saratoga Springs which has beautiful natural views and landscaping. It's sometimes a drag to have to hoof it to a bus stop only to wait 30 minutes then stop 4 more times before you even get out of your resort. In order to get the spread out and natural resorts you have to deal with busing it places. At DLR and Universal the 2 parks plus DTD/CityWalk are all crunched together so you can park and easily get between all 3. In that respect not having buses is a blessing.

LOL and again... I called it. How many others will do the same...c'mon you know you want to :)

God bless universal and their 3 E-Tickets... they are finally improving
Ah. The three E tickets that will open within 12 months of eachother.

You just can't resist mentioning Universal can you? I did try. Its a bit of a cheap shot though eh?

I just wish WDW would do that. I do.

Yeah but they spent a billion dollars on this thing and got 1.5 hours of prime Christmas Day viewing time to advertise it. If they didn't showcase the bands it would border on corporate negligence. We here are all sick of hearing about the bands (good or bad), but tons of "regular people" don't have a clue they exist. I have a hunch that if they didn't mention the bands or MM+ at all during the parade this board would be buzzing with posts talking about how the project is going so poorly that they are trying to hide it or cover it up;)
