Merchandise Watch '11: Turning the Corner on Unique Souvenirs?

We bought magnets that look ike A-E tickets today at the MK. They were great until we got to the D Ticket that had the "Tiki Room" listed as"Under New Management." It is stupid mistakes like this that show that Disney has lttle care for their hard core fans.

I had the exact same reaction to that error - someone was being careless and it's unfortunate. I think the pin set is correct, but there was something else (the notepad? I can't remember) that had the same mistake.

You might have to dig a little harder than you'd like to find the unique and fun clothing, but I do believe it is out there, more so than in recent years' past.
On my last night of my recent trip we went to The Wave for dinner and visited the gift shop on the Concourse. We stayed at AS-Sports and found the merchandise at the Contemporary Resort to be quite different from the other shops we visited. My wife said we going to start our shopping sprees at the deluxe hotels next time.

I’ll agree to an extent. The more ride specific merch is a really nice touch. Even if it is just a beach towel it is nice to know that you can home with a piece of your favorite Disney World attraction. For the last few years that has not been the case. In 2002 I got a REALLY nice Mickey and Pluto snow globe from Port Orleans. No chance of finding anything like that anymore. They should have those everywhere. They don’t have to be 12 inches tall even a mini one would be cool to collect from each place. I think everyone misses out. Disney World misses out on the money from sales, and we the fans miss out because there is pretty much nothing for the diehard fans. I don’t want a Haunted Mansion pencil. I want newer snow globes. It IS sort of making a turn in the right direction. But like you said…still a long way to go.

Don't complain too much, at least they are still selling your favorite Nightmare Before Christmas stuff outside of the Haunted Mansion! Don't want them to change that!!!

If I would only recieve a $300 fine instead of a life ban from the parks...I would catch all that garbage on fire and protest. Or in protest.

I'm not sure how long they've been around (maybe two years), but I absolutely LOVE the "Por favor..." monorail t-shirts. It's just esoteric enough that nobody would really get it unless they were fellow WDW fans like you.

oh my lord, i LOVE that shirt. But I just cant bring myself to buy it cause ive only seen it in mens sizes. why dont they make shirts for women sizes too??!?! the women sizes are always dumb and pink with glitter or other cliche girly things. apparently tshirt makes dont think women want to wear fun shirts too! boo. :zipit:

I own 3 Duffy's and I could care less what others think. I love him. I look for Duffy stuff wherever I go in the parks. We'll just have to start the WDW Fan Club Flunkies group for those of us who don't get our drawers in a flap over a Teddy bear. :D

Well, I don't own an Duffy, and chances are that I never will. But I am pretty sure my youngest daughter will. I think he is just fine. A touch contrived, but fine. Plush toys are just not my cup of tea.

I also don't mind Vinylmations and Pin's. I don't quite see the appeal of Vinylmations but if people like them (and my oldest daughter does) then more power to them. I also don't find them obtrusive.

As for pins taking over the shop in Frontierland - that's because it's pin shop. :)

I agree that they are moving in the right direction. I only wish more specialty areas would come back. Such as going to a store in Frontierland and buying frontier style merchandise.

Also, the only thing I like dated are picture frames.

Back in the day that shop was so much cooler. As a kid it was one of my favorites. I had purchased a real skin cap, a bulls horn that was made into a horn you could blow through like a bugle, north and south caps, etc. It was a neat place...

A couple of things come to mind.....

To me, the Space Mountain shop is a lost opportunity. I've never been impressed with the selection offered there.

I think the idea behind getting an unknown design when buying a Vinylmation is really a dumb one, especially at $10 a pop. There were a few I might have been interested in getting if I knew what I was buying.

I got caught up in buying pins when it started in 2000. I've probably sold a third of my collection at a loss because it was a case of "what was I thinking?". I think it's time to scale things back with this. The creativity has been pretty watered down. I buy maybe 2 each trip over the last 5 years.

Clothing. I agree with the statements made that especially with adult clothing that some designs need to be toned down. I have about 3 plastic totes full of t shirts from previous trips that I realized probably aren't ones to wear outside the parks. The plan is to someday, have my wife make a quilt from the shirts as a nice reminder of previous trips.

I wish that the stores were more individualized like they were many years ago. Many of the stores contain the same merchandise from the store 100 feet from it. The recent switch to ride specific merchandise is a definite improvement.

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but, I collect license plates and I wish they would go back and produce resort specific plates again. Now, each year I only come back with about 2 new ones. I used to like going around to the resorts and buying those made for them. Plus, it was nice getting away from the parks for a while and checking out the other hotels and maybe having a bite to eat while we were there.

I know that this is unnoticable but it still really bothers me. For Christmas I got a pink shirt that says WALT DISNEY WORLD on the front. The part that bothers me is the tag on the inside. It says walt Disney world and right under that is says Disneyland resort. I mean I understand having a generic tag for the rides or land merchandise the parks have in common but this shirt is obviously not sold in Disneyland. I just was putting that out there.

We always stop over at the Contemporary for shopping. I love Bay View Gifts. My husband and I always leave with something from there!

I just finished reading through this thread. I have only been to the World twice, but I have been able to find mercandise that appeals to me.

To Phonedave from post #22. I purchased the automatic watch in Sept. 2009 and I love it. I wear it almost all the time and have recieved numerous compliments on it. Definately worth the $175. It dose have some weight to it. It also has a crystal on the back so that you can see all the mechanical works from both the front and back, cinda cool.

Actually, I get what you mean! It bothers me too when I see any generic Disney Parks stuff... and even the little things like tags bother me as well! I have a shirt that is Disney World specific and I question the same thing... obviously that shirt is not sold in DL... so why can't they make some specific Disney World tags!?!

Because they do sell the exact shirt in Disneyland, however it is screened differently. I would rather have them spend money elsewhere than worry about putting different tags, that only the 'wearer' will see, on the interiors of the shirts that are sold in stateside parks. IMHO.

WOW great thread!

I agree lately the quality and selection of merchandise has been lacking. I really don't like or get the vinyl-mation stuff at all. For a few years I collected the mid size glass - laser etched blocks...but then found out from the store at DTD, “something brothers”, that they were doing away with them. SO now I grab the keychains and remove the metal chain part and keep the smaller glass ice cube ones for display. Yes cheaper...than what I had purchased in the past. But the larger ones I have are nice too.

In the past I always enjoyed buying the new polo shirt from the newest attraction when it opened at the World. Last good one I got was from Everest. I had them all - test track, mission space...etc. Then after Everest the quality went to crap and the nicer polos just disappeared from those stores. I like a nice polo shirt that has good embroidery and a nice logo that is not too loud. I guess those days are gone. Now if you do find one and wash it 3 times it gets all out of shape. I found a nice one at Castaway Cay last year that I liked and I got it. Now its way too big….it’s like a circus tent…all big and with no form. And last year I remember buying a pirate polo type shirt from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at a store on the Boardwalk. It was pretty nice with all sorts of dark maps and pirate type stuff on it on the entire shirt. It was close to $50 I think. I got it and put it in our room once we got back to it that day. Later in our trip I saw a guy with one on at MK that had been washed a few times. He was eating an ice cream cone…and the shirt looked like $%ll. Sine mine was never worn or un-tagged I took it back. Glad I saw it on him first! It was a full button down shirt from top to bottom – short sleeve - with a nice collar on it. I tried it on at the store and thought it was nice. But on him it HUNG poorly, mind you after a few uses/washes, and it did not sit on his shoulders at all and was all un-even at the bottom. Picky or not, for that price it’d better sit nice after a few washes – or more!

The wife and I struggle each year to get a set of matching T's that we like to commerate <sp> the trip. Not big on the year sensitive ones. At times we just can't find one that we like. Not that we don't agree but more that what is offered these days we just don't like be it design or the in store felt quality. We also get a new ball cap too. And over the past few years it’s been more difficult to find something that we like as well. We chose separate ones in caps since the ladies designs are different.

So seeing some improvement in the merch category is somewhat exciting. Personally we like the "Screen Door" shop at Boardwalk as well as the Emporium @ MK and Mouse Gears @ Epcot too. The shop at the Contempary is pretty good too. We've even found some great stuff at DTD too. I do hope this trend of new and better quality stuff continues.

BTW, I do like the “por-fa-vor” shirt. Unfortunately I saw it at Mouse Gears and didn’t get it…once I went back they didn’t have my size…XL. I forgot the Wife’s Rule – SEE IT - BUY IT! If you change your mind return it. That way you won’t miss out if you go back to get it and find out it’s gone. hehehehe

Again, thanks for the thread!

Oh, I don't doubt the same shirts (differently screened) are sold elsewhere. But this particular shirt was pretty WDW specific ~ embroided image of Cinderella's Castle with the year '71. It would have to be a completely different shirt to work in DL or anywhere else!

The tags is just one small issue... I was just agreeing with the other poster... they're not only one bothered by the generic tags!

I can't stand the napkins or cups either that have Disney Parks on them. When I wipe my mouth I want the napkin to say "Walt Disney World" darn it!!!

On the t-shirt tags, I'm sure it's Hanes making batches of shirts all at once, that will then be printed with the design of choice - and that could be something that would work at one park or both.

If it's a choice between that or a Disney Parks design, I'll take it.
