McDonalds At Downtown Disney Robbed

Downtown Disney always seems to pop up in the news every so often, and none of the news is ever good.

Which is exactly why I steer clear of it whenever I visit WDW. On my last visit to DTD five years ago the place seemed tired and corny and stuck in the 1990's. I decided then I didn't need to go back.

The crime that takes place there, sometimes violently against tourists in the parking lots, also is something to be very worried about. WDW management has simply got to get a handle on DTD and what it's become.

They don't have these problems in the Anaheim version of DTD, that's for sure.

It is not as bad as you're making it out to be. I go to DTD Disney ALL the time and have never felt threatened or in danger while I was there. By the reports the burglary at McDonald's happened before 7 AM and it's not likely that tourists were in danger. Disney takes security very seriously at DTD, but you can't control everything that happens all the time.

DTD is a safe area no different than your local suburban mall in fact I would bet your local high end mall has more crime that you may even be aware of. So to say DTD is getting bad is truly not the case. Any establishment nowadays is prone to crimes being committed.

Also remember the locality of DTD to the city limits , Orlando has a high crime rate so to say DTD should be immune is pipe dreaming.

True. But somehow robberies and kidnappings and violent crime happen every so often at the DTD in Orlando. That kind of stuff doesn't happen at the Anaheim DTD, and it's been open for 8 years now.

The Orlando area has one of the worst crime rates in the nation, right up there with Detroit on a per capita basis. WDW management simply has to get a handle on this crime seeping into DTD. Maybe send a security team out to Anaheim and learn how they keep crime away from Disneyland's Downtown Disney District?

considering how many millions of people walk through there each week/month/year, I bet there is very little crime.

Kidnapping? When was the last kidnapping at Downtown Disney? The 'alleged' kidnapping where the the 'victims' declined to prosecute?

Also, keep in mind, the Disneyland Resort gets nowhere near the traffic that the Walt Disney World Resort does. Yes, Disney could have better security at Downtown Disney, but name one place that couldn't stand to have better security. And yes, there are even security breaches at the White House from time to time. :D

Have you ever been anywhere else in the Anaheim and Los Angeles areas. Youll be looking over your shoulder every few seconds.

Yeah, I've been around OC and LA counties. San Diego County too. For over a quarter of a century. There are some scary neighborhoods up in LA County, but per capita it's one of the safest big cities in the country.

The crime stats on Anaheim versus Orlando make Anaheim look like the Garden of Eden before Eve got hungry for an apple. http://www.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=Anaheim&s1=CA&c2=Orlando&s2=FL

All I'm saying is that WDW's Downtown Disney clearly has a crime problem, and a publicity problem that is related to the crime problem. Anaheim's Downtown Disney has a much better track record when it comes to crime and the publicity that goes with it. And Anaheim's Downtown Disney sits directly in between (we're talking mere steps here) two Disney theme parks that get a combined total of over 20 Million visitors per year, plus millions more that are just going to Downtown Disney for dinner and a movie.

It would be wise for TDO to send out a small group of security managers to Anaheim for a few days to see how Team Disney Anaheim polices and secures it's extremely popular Downtown Disney District. There's obviously some learning to be gained from such an exchange, and the Orlando folks could likely give the Anaheim folks some tips as well. :)

I've said this before, but I don't feel that comparison is at all fair. WDW shouldn't be saddled with Orlando's crime statistics any more than Disneyland should be with LA's.

Compare Anaheim to Kissimmee, and the figures become more comparable, with Anaheim leading in a couple of categories, like auto theft and rape. (The murder and rape graphs appear to be wrong. They don't match the actual figures underneath, with the graph erroneously showing Anaheim with a higher murder rate and Kissimmee with more rapes per capita.)

Anyway, I agree with the larger point that the number of crimes reported around DTD gives the impression of a security problem, but that Anaheim to Orlando comparison has always bugged me. It just feels tailor-made to favor Disneyland's environs to me.
